Why do some parents feel compelled to abuse their kids?

I came from Wal Mart earlier today and I saw something that disgusted me enough to ask my GF to call store security and ask them to check it out.

Some lady had her kid, who seemed sedate and calm, almost to an odd extent, on a kid leash and still in a baby's stroller. He had to be at least 5, and they went in the section I was in. I was just staring at the fish and talking. She allowed him to get out the stroller and he walked in front of me to look at the fish. He wasn't there 5 seconds when she yanked the chain and promised to beat his 'dumb ass' when they get home. She apologized to me, loaded him in the stroller and went on her way.

My g/f was thoroughly disgusted, as was I, however, I did not feel compelled to do much. She wanted me to do something but I just did not feel compelled. Finally I suggested to her to call the Store security and she did.

I'm sure she'll just say she was disciplining him. Did my G/f do the right thing?

( Off Topic: Heh, even better question. Why is it that in the Google Ad-Banner thing at the top of the page it said "Make your kids happy, New Gamecube Titles" Then something about Terminator 3 :lol )

I don't mind parent's having their kids on leashes as long as they clean up after them and don't leave them tied up in the backyard (the crying keeps me awake at night).

You always have the extremes. What about those parents who let their kids run wild and do whatever they want? Those are the kids with (raises clentched hand and adpots faux-Italian accent) no respect , who'll end up robbing your house or mugging your mum to pay for their drug habbit.

Monsters don't always beget monsters. Walt Disney was beaten by his father, and even though he was tormented most of his life by that and his self-inflicted guilt regarding his parents deaths*, look at what he did.

*He bought them a new house in Florida after he was making it big, and they died from carbon monoxide poisoning or something the first night they stayed there.

Of course, this thread is about something different... I've just had Walt's life on my mind lately.

You sure it was guilt or annoyance at the fact that he didn't come up with a quicker plan? :)

I wonder what being on a leash does to a kid, developmental wise.
I just found out recently that one of my best friends was once 'on a leash'. And he turned out perfectly fine. He's a manager, DJ, and has his own company (however insignificant) at the age of 21.

So maybe the leash did him good?

Well, no. His younger brother was also on the leash and is now a lazy, unsocial pothead.

Sooo... the leash probably has no effect. Unless you're still strapped in at the age of twelve or something.

my parents had me on a leash when i was a kid. Seriously. Mostly cause i would ALWAYS get lost whenever we would go out to the mall or the store or something.

The leash is cruel and demeaning. For centuries we had kids without leashes and the human race still exists.
And then things like department stores, malls and amusement parks popped up, and the children were never safe!

A lot less cruel than a pedophile's dick in your mouth.
