i've taken the xp firewall off for now and setup port forwarding for the from and to ports BT is using, but BT still sucks for downloading. there are 6-9 seeds yet I'm still only getting 1-3kB/sec

What am I doing wrong?

Are you using SP2?
yes, but even when I turn the firewall completely off, it still fucks me around.

edit:
In azureus it say this about my "health":

[yellow] means that the tracker is ok, you're connected to peers, but you don't have any remote connection. You may have a NAT problem if your torrents stay on the yellow status all the time.
my torrents stay on yellow all the time.

I have no idea how to fix this mystery NAT problem.

There are serious problems with SP2 and P2P programs cause instead of securing windows from worms trojans etc they limited the maximum concurent half-time connections to 10 to avoid "zombies" (computers taken over and used by hackers). There's only one way to solve this for now. Since I can't link you to the page since MS will consider the fix "illegal" or something search in google for the 4226fix . It's a german site (it's in english though), there you'll download and apply the 4226fix and if nothing else is the problem (since SP2 has plenty) you'll be OK.

edit: NAT is related with port forwarding. Are you sure you opened 6881 for TCP and UDP? Also it can be your firewall's problem. Outpost is a great firewall if you have a router.

Just a bit of an update, though no one will probably care. BitTorrent is working fine now (using Azureus for a client). It seems there were some other steps in the port forwarding process that I needed to do, but they weren't explicitly included with the tutorials that came with my ADSL modem router. I had set up a port forwarding rule through the NAT configuration, but I didn't realise I had to configure the firewall to accept data from the port forward rule. I just had to add and change a few things in the IP filtering configuration for my ADSL modem router and BT started working immediately...

Sucks to be a BT and ADSL n00b. :)

bittorrent sucked for me too. i download the torrents through bitcomet now and its much better.

I thought it was common knowledge that BitTorrent sucked? Stuff always takes forever for things to download on my end. I'm on a Mac, so perhaps that doesn't help, but if people aren't sharing a particular file or seeding, I don't know what I can do on my end.

BitTorrent tends to be really hit and miss for me. I had all the ports forwarded, and was always able to get good speeds and green indicators for everything. However, nowadays I can't get over a yellow, and seem to always be in the "uploading at 10+k/s, downloading at 1 k/s" crowd.

Bit-Torrent is awesome for me after I spent the time tuning my router.

I downloaded a 240 meg file in just over and hour. It only had 4 seeds at the start.

:D

BT is touchy I am DLing something now through Bit Torrnado so far I went from 150Kbs all the way down to 2Kbs to finally zero....for a hour...then it was steady at 40-60Kbs now it just jumped up to 160kbs

http://bittornado.com/faq.html - there's an anwser about being constantly yellow and a link in there somewhere about Port Fowarding.

*edit* as I was typing this it droped to 31Kbs
