I've never had this problem even though I'm half black due to the fact that I look like a nerd. I've always found watching sports to be boring. At most I might watch some of the olympics.

I once heard a radio DJ say that it’s just a given that everyone who lives in our state watches basketball to some degree. I mean, I did…..decades ago as a kid when my dad basically forced me to as “father-son bonding”, I was bored as shit every game.

I was also told by a co-worker that even though I don’t like country music with only a few rare exceptions (90’s Garth Brooks mainly) that I’m definitely going to like it eventually because that’s just how people who live here turn out according to him. I decided to spare him the info that currently I mostly listen to hip-hop, rap, and J-pop, probably would have broken him mentally.

Like I was born and grew up in a state/area, didn’t mean I joined a goddamn hivemind cult. People who throw out these sorts of absolutes are just obnoxious.

So yeah, OP, you’re not wrong for finding these sorts of generalizations annoying.

I think you're reading too much into it, basketball is a popular sport, anyone is allowed to like it, of any ethnicity, there's nothing token about that .... There is perhaps something token about being vocally against liking a given sport ..

Used to watch and play myself. Local convent school had courts. I was shit and got smashed by some randomers who asked to play.

Think I took my posters down soon after.

Used to kick mine then aginst a wall outside my house, the harpy across the road sent her son out to play (at that wall, didn't see him) and nearly took the head off him. Turned around just as she was lunging at me, the balls are bloody heavy.

It’s consumerism/marketing OP. Companies try to steer individuals into pre-designed consumer stereotypes that allow them to maximize their return of investment. These companies don’t give a shit about individuality or culture, you are just a living wallet to them. They have invested a lot of money into marketing to the stereotype in your demographic. If you deviate from those stereotypes they cannot sell you what they want to sell you, thus they must steer you into the stereotypes through news, media, social peer pressure etc. Just ignore them, and stop using the media that is trying to manipulate you.

I used to LOVE watching sports when I was younger, as I’ve aged I just don’t care. My old favorite sport (nba) has turned into a giant cuddle fest of pussies who bitch after every play and have no true drive to be the best, just team up with the super teams and win meaningless championships. Baseball is a slog to watch, and nfl I honestly check the scores but only tune in around the super bowl. Like I said, as I’ve aged into an older adult, I don’t understand how so many adults are so into watching other dudes play sports.
