Yeah, I never understood the chip generated past music when there were past tracks on the disc already.
I can't remember, but did they ever use those tracks in the game? I've recently finished it again (typically play through the Sonic games at least every couple months or more), but I didn't go for the best ending or anything.
the PC version of Sonic CD is about the same as the Sega CD version content wise ( graphics ,sound color and stages), but it is still not as good as the Sega CD version for two reasons: sowdown and loading. The pc verion of Sonic CD loads alot more often and longer then the Sega CD version.
The past music, IMO, sounded better that standard Genesis chip music. Maybe the developers were trying to show the Sega CD off a little beyond redbook? There was also alot of parallax in this game, moreso that in the other Sonic games of the time.
The sega CD has a far superior sound chip to the Genesis. Mickey Mania is a great example of how much better the sounds and music are in the Sega CD version.

If I remember things correctly, you could not play the red book versions of those tunes because they were not there. Only the PC version had them (and all tunes were shorter as a result).
No no no, Sonic CD PC is still inferior regardless of the PC you choose to play it on. When you transition between time periods in the PC version, they always display an actual "now loading" screen. That is not the case on Sega/Mega CD, which results in a more seamless experience. Also, no matter the PC, the display mode they chose to use does not scroll as smoothly (even when using the smooth Sonic option). I believe vertical sync cannot be enabled either, but I'm not entirely certain.
Also, you bring up the WinXP issue, and that is true. It's a real pain to install on XP...

OK, I just popped in my two SCD copies (JP and US) as well as my PC version just to check. I KNEW the PC version had those tracks at the end, but I had forgotten just what they were there for. I forgot that there is music for both a good and bad future on the discs as well.
The past music really IS well beyond typical Genesis chip music and sounds nearly on par with the Japanese CD audio tracks. It's pretty obvious why they had to make them CD audio tracks in the PC version then...
