any video that requires this piece of junk requires max sound out of my laptop, even then, it's barely audible. why is this turd even around? If I watch something that requires it, then my computer makes any other kind of sound, the speakers nearly explode. anyone got any tips or am I stuck with quiet video?

if you have a more recent build of ffdshow intstalled for your video decoding (and why wouldn't you, it's the best and handles nearly every format with aplomb), it also comes with an audio-decocder that not only handles ac3 (among others), but also includes an equalizer, stereo mixer and volume normalization that'll go a long way towards amplifying the sound to a louder level.

ffdshow, is a player I can use to play divx files with this ac3 thing louder? I'm not audio/videophile, I'll try anything to get better sound for shows. will this improve the sound on files that I don't author?

ffdshow isn't a player, it's a one-size-fits-all codec that handles all manners of divx, xvid, mp4, h.264, wma, etc. video formats with very low cpu utilization and a wealth of features like post-processing, subtitles, levels, etc.

the later versions come with ffdshow-audio, which can be configured to handle any or all audio formats embedded in your movie files. it doesn't really make it sound 'better', but it can help with your low audio problem (by boosting its volume for starters), or you can also route the audio directly to your favorite winamp DSP to handle that if you find ffdshow-audio's inborn features lacking.

ok, got the program, forgive my newbness, but if I want to alter the volume, does the program just need to be running while I play my video? then alter settings accordingly?

edit: I'm not really understanding how the changes i make to this program affect sound on my movies, will it change the volume for every movie/show/whatever that uses ac3?

EDIT AGAIN: fixed it, AC3 actually puts an icon in your control panel, standard volume is quite low, but can be raised through the control panel -> ac3filter screen.
