Why I like the PSP

Here's a little bit on why my PSP is getting lots of game-time from me these days. A list of reasons why PSP rocks.

1) Number one reason: the library is terrific. Forget what you've heard, if you haven't decided firsthand, but there are a lot of great games available RIGHT NOW. For example:

Wipeout Pure -- the latest Wipeout, and the best since the first one (which only gets that status for being the first, and completely fresh). It's got a ton of tracks and ships-- and when you're done with those, there are even more to download. If I am counting right, there ought to be around 24 tracks when all is said and done. A whole bunch of modes and skill levels, as well.

Lumines -- addictive and pretty. More need to be said? No, it's not the next Tetris, but the fact that people even tik that way should tell you something.

Ridge Racer -- I've never been a huge fan of the series, but the rave reviews got me to try it, and I was hooked.

Namco Museum -- the best classics compliation on a handheld ever.

Darkstalkers -- console quality 2D fighter with beautiful art

Untold Legends -- console quality dungeon crawler (in terms of both graphics and length) with wireless play!

Shortly, there will be a bunch more, with Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories leading my list of must-haves.

2) That gorgeous screen. Not just for games, but for the ancillary use as a photo-viewer and movie viewer. Best screen on any portable device I've ever seen smaller than a laptop (and better than lots of those, too).

3) Speaking of which, it's a movie and photo viewer. Awesome bonus.

4) Homebrew. I love to play around with little free stuff. I love emulating systems I have in the closest (and not just the NES, SNES, Genesis and Gameboy, but things like the Amiga and Atari ST as well). I love taking my games and putting them on memory stick so they have no load times, and so I don't carry around a bunch of UMDs.

5) WiFi. Within 10 miutes of arriving home with my PSP, I was on the internet playing Twisted Metal (another great game) with a few people.

Well there goes the thread.

Gimme Liberty City Stories! Hoping the game comes through!

There you go. I used to try and defend the N64 back in the day, I speak from experience.

Seriously, are ALL junior members Nintendo fanboys?

I've been insecure about my purchase since before DS took off. I was insecure buying it. Has nothing to do with the reasons I like it.

Now, how about your insecurity and need to troll? I guess you have no reasons to like whatever it is you play, so you project rationalization onto others?

Oh yeah, for upcoming games, add Loco Roco. I hope it's not another Mercury-- but the hands-on impressions seem to be good.

I like homebrew, I like emulators, I love the sleep function, most of the games are good.
The bad is base price is high, the memory sticks and games are expensive, and waiting for Ghouls and Ghosts :(

Seriously how old are you? 12?

PSP is nice. Library is a tad stale right now, but it'll get better. I wish it was easier to get pics, movies, audio on there though (without all the manual conversions and optimizations one has to go through).

I'm getting a bit more into my PSP now with NBA Live and Virtua Tennis.

But I didn't touch it all summer long.

Putting movies onto the PSP is too much of a pain in the ass (I have a 1 GB Memory Stick) ... so as a "media player", the unit has been a huge bust for me.

Are there any new programs that let you rip a DVD to PSP format better than the early stuff?

No, I remember some Alex talking shit about Link´s horse when compared to SotC. The question could be: are all junior members brainless?

I pretty much agree with this. PSP is good but not great yet. GTA:LCS, Loco, FF7, etc should change this I hope. Also I'd love to see Sony release some PSP -> PC -> PSP software sometime.

What ever happend to that Nintendo sub-forum idea, people where talking about? :P

I'd only end up harrassing the Nintendo fanboys for their poor choice in games.

Anyway, this thread was just going to end up with everyone effectively high fiving each other for buying a PSP. Again: "It's just a poor excuse for a thread."

Unless he also owns a DS too, you fuckin' jackass.

I love because:

1) Portable Image Viewer :)

2) Homebrew: Having the chance to play SNES games everywhere is ALL I always asked for. And NO, NO and NO, GBA is not the same experience.

3) Tenchu PSP. A game that helps you to improve your senses, sight is no longer the most important.

4) Ridge Racers. Simply awesome :P

You should really let them have their rally cry thread. It's kinda a GAF tradition. Lord knows I created a bunch in the N64 and Gamecube's behalf back in the day.

This is getting out of hand...

OT: I´ll try to get something good out of all this mess... can anyone explain me how to have an avatar? I don´t seem to be able to unmark the option "Do not use an Avatar" in my CP :-/

This is a worthless thread and it starts with the poster i mean it was always going to be like this so i dont know why people still do this....

i love the PSP alot. but the fact that there are alot of ps2 games i want to buy, plus the xbox 360 is coming and most likly i am buying it, then there is this monster ps3, i really cant focus on PSP, if i am home, i will play home console. and if i am out, then i am out. i will not go out to play even more games.

imagine i am in the club and insted of getting girls i am playing psp on the corner.

and surly i cant play @ work.

what i mean is when i am out with friends, i dont play games. and when i am @ home, i play home consoles. the only thing left is when i am in the bathroom. and i like to read when i am there :lol

And here I thought you whiners wanted to see more positivity in general?

Personally, I think the PSP has one of the best first year lineups I've experienced -- I not only agree with Ignatz' choices, but I can't believe he left out:

-- Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee, the best version of the franchise yet and virtually the PERFECT handheld game
-- Burnout Legends, a stunning racer that totally makes me froth in my boxers every time I turn it on

I'd also tentatively suggest that Dynasty Warriors PSP is good despite the homely visuals and slowdown, but I ain't gonna push my luck. It still rocks, though!

And since the DS has been brought up, and since I ever so enjoy pointing out its massive shortcomings, I find that it has one of the worst first year lineups since the PS2. Of the spate of games released, only Advance Wars DS, Trauma Center, and Castlevania DoS have really seemed to justify its existence. Kirby wasn't bad, but it was ultimately too simple and shallow. Meteos never grabbed me, but I'll acknowledge its quality. The rest of the library is subpar crap on a clamshell, and it embarrasses me on every level that you self-loathing smacktards continue to try to defend it intellectually. Factor in the unpleasantly archaic hardware and you wind up with spin that'd make even Karl Rove gag.

Buy a PSP! Support progress and innovation!

It's under the "edit profile" options.

Oh yeah, SLEEP MODE.

Man, that's cool.

Summer was indeed pretty dry, but Wipeout Lumines and Untold Legends all kept me going. I picked up Ridge Racer when I needed something different.

Another thing I like, at leaas I think I will -- 2D games. Loco Roco, Lemmings and Worms look beautiful. It's nice to see a 2D game which isn't either tile-based or a fighter. Not that those are bad, but it's nice to have somethign different.

[Phranky, if you're not banned before you read this-- this is not a reaction to my own feelings about the PSP-- I'm not attached to gaming that much anymore, and I can easily afford a DS (and will probably have one sooner or later). It's in response to the number of threads I've seen where all sorts of negativity is posted about the PSP without much to counter it (other than sales figures).]

[edit: too late]

I'm rather conflicted myself.

Love the PSP, for the most part. Bored of the library, for the most part.

PSP hasn't had a whole lot to interest me since its launch, although its getting better. Saying its having a great first year would be overstating things a bit I believe.

Things I love about PSP

The sleek design
The LCD
Ridge Racer

Things I hate about PSP

Media functionality is a pain
Memory Stick prices suck ass
Software library is somewhat soft
Too many racers (I played Ridge Racer to death already)
System is too bulky
Movie UMD prices are ridiculous (what happened to $9.99 standard?)
