Why I like the PSP

PSP is probably the best investment or significant purchase I've ever made. I currently don't make use of its multimedia functionality, internet/WiFi capabilities, or even the homebrew applications, but the games alone serve me well enough that I play it every single day for sometimes several hours.

I'm in love with it so much, though, that I'm planning to purchase a 2GB memory stick soon (as soon as they're back in stock for cheap) for multimedia and a router as well for online multiplayer.

The launch lineup was so incredibly strong, its tided me over to the present without any problems. Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Acid, Wipeout Pure, Lumines, and Hot Shots: Open Tee were all terrific. Even if the release schedule was dry as a bone this month and in future months, I don't see myself ever getting bored of these games.

Currently, I'm enjoying Burnout Legends, Virtua Tennis: World Tour, and SSX: On Tour, and I'm looking forward to recharging my battery several dozen times with Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories next week. :)

if nintendo fanboy exuberance had any power to affect reality:

1. there would be more than two good games on ds, and i would be playing them! instead of phoenix wright!

2. ridge racers, minna no golf, sengoku cannon, star soldier, etc. would somehow cease to exist because THERE ARE NO GAMES ON PSP LOL

here's looking forward to makaimura and the rockman remakes. there's hope yet that puppies and self-help aren't the future of portables!

Oh, and I love how I can use the browser to surf the Internet, find a podcast, download it driectly to the memory stick, and listen to it on the go. Haven't seen the DS do that one yet! ;)
 
The PSP is amazing, too bad the library doesn't appeal to me very much.
I probably still end up buying one for those must have games but even games
like Lumines and Ridge Racers dindn't make me want to buy it up until now.

Besides, I'm afraid I'll end up braking it within a matter of days :( it feels so fragile.
 
I haven't gotten a ton of use out of its game library...but the homebrew and emulation on it more than justify the purchase for me.

I wait patiently for the day that the official SDK somehow is leaked so that homebrew devs can really get to work on it. It's got potential to have the greatest dev scene ever.
 
We'll see if Sonic Rush comes out this year! And if it doesn't suck! The only positive feedback I've heard on it has been from arch-shill Teddman, who simultaneously tried to pimp Nanostray to a crowd of shooter folks who thankfully knew better. The dual-screen thing looks confusing, but I remain cautiously optimistic.
 
i refuse to acknowledge the existence of games that fall below a certain aesthetic standard, so as far as i'm concerned sonic rush isn't coming out this year or ever. if sonic advance showed us what sonic would've looked like as a third-rate snes game, sonic rush shows us what sonic would've looked like as an nth-rate ps1 game. new 2d sonic is no doubt a good idea. so get back to me when a new 2d sonic can compare visually to now teenaged genesis games. :/

edit: as drinky reminds us, e3 attendees liked nanostray too. irrational ds exuberance! it's catching!

They're not mutually exclusive. There is no mandatory rule that DS owners must be diametrically opposed to all things PSP -- or vice versa.

The truth: These are the most complimentary handhelds in the history of handheld gaming -- very little software overlap, two distinct styles of gaming, both have tremendous third-party support and quickly growing software libraries.

The PSP is a bit overpriced and its media features have some issues, in my opinion, but if you can't see why many people love the device, then you're simply being obtuse.

It's not as fragile as you think. I've had mine since Day 1, and it looks like it just came out of the box, except for all the fingerprints! ;)

Its durability is just fine from my usage. The game discs however need some work. The plastic back piece has fallen in on two of my launch games. :/

I've been playing wipeout pure, lumines and had the chance to try out ridge racers for a couple of laps so I know what it feels like, but the psp is NOT the device i would put in my pocket. But when i'm home, I don't feel the need to play on a handheld, Why would I when i can play on my TV.
I still think the micro is best handheld when you concider playing "on the road"

You're forwarding a myth. This whole Nintendo fanboy mythology is BS. Anti-Nintendo trolls -- such as yourself, presumably -- are just as dedicated as Nintendo fanboys.
 
Eh. I don't really agree with some of those games for the most part, but I'm not going to buy ports of mainstream games that can be easily found just for a handheld.

PSP's upcoming future excites me a tad with Loco Roco, GTA: LCS, Pursuit Force, Extreme G&G, and Mega Man X Remake, but it seriously needs some good Japanese support. Who gives a fuck about more football.

Right now its a nice Van Wilder-player, though.

And I can see why Phranky is trolling, but I kind of find the PSP "appreciation" topics overwhelming. I don't think people really talk positively about the "other next-generation" handheld randomly. I guess it's because they have basically every Wednesday and Thursday for that. :)
 
I don't love it.
I resent that its helped leave me out of pocket actually. And I find it hard to buy for. Pro Evo 5 on it doesn't interest me for example. Ports of EA Sports titles don't. Basically anything I can get on the home consoles but better...

What I really want are action/adventure, puzzle and quirky/unusual games that I can play without having to commit so much on the move.


Some things I positively hate:

I couldn't possibly hate Memory Stick Duo more. I really couldn't. UMD movies are absolutely fucking useless to me. I converted my own videos and copied to memory stick once or twice the first week I got it. This shit gets emphasised in Sony marketing and on PSP news coverage.. every time, the angle of pretty much all coverage is what a wonderful multimedia device it is. Fuck THAT. Nearly any Mp3 player is better, and yes the screen is gorgeous and video looks great on it (so what), THIS IS NOT WHAT IT SHOULD BE ABOUT.


On the other hand...

The thing screams gaming potential and its purely ignored by the mainstream. Even retail crowd the PSP area with UMD movies. If theres one thing this thread will probably help drive home before it eventually dies, its that the PSP is an aesthetically pleasing handheld (thats putting it extremely lightly), and that it delivers incredible looking games, visually unequalled in the world of handhelds.

The worst you can really say about PSP, will never really be that bad.

Its pricey, but its impressive hardware that Sony are taking a loss to bring you. Its big, but so is DS. It seems saturated with racing games, and you can be faced with some piss poor games/franchises as you peruse the shop shelves.. but DS is hindered by GBA developers moving their projects over to it unchanged, and people thinking up the absolute shittest possible uses for the touch screen. Have we forgotten shit like Sprung? Both have rough. Both have diamonds in the rough. So don't take any negativity on my part to be derived of any agenda... they're both more interesting to me than any of the current gen consoles.

And as this is a PSP thread it'd be worth mentioning that the PSP has some heavy hitters in the future as well as what are sure to be some obscure gems, see: Loco Roco, Katamari, GTA:LCS, Tocobot, FFVII spin off, yadda yadda (stuff I aint interested in).

I can't even think of any one game that I want to see appear on it... I just want something to come along and surprise me. Something I can't get nigh on anywhere else.. like Lumines.

That is the very definition of a Nintendo fanboy, which has also been expanded to encompass anyone who provides apologism for the DS' miserable hardware specifications and/or has become so disenchanted with gaming that they'll look to a stylus or a magic waggle wand for salvation.

I doubt there's anyone on these boards that owns only a GameCube. I'd say 90% of people on this board own more than one console to begin with.

Micro is cool, but the screen is a bit too small for me. I carry my PSP in a case, usually inside a backpack when I take it on the road. And I enjoy playing it on the couch while I'm watching TV. It's a different experience for me than when I'm playing on a console or the PC. I can sit in the living room, have a TV show on, and hold a conversation while I play.

As long as those choices are dictated by personal taste and not by some weird, arbitrary loyalty/fixation with the company, I don't see how thats really a problem or how it could possibly demean their opinion.

A) I only own a Gamecube (I'm a father of two with a budding career and plenty of household responsibilities. I love games, but I only have time for so many, and the Cube's price point is very nice for my budget. I have ample access to the other consoles and experience as much software as I can, but I feel no compulsion to own "teh newest and teh best," I am simply compelled to play and enjoy games.)

B) I am very excited by both the DS' software and the Revolution's controller.

C) I am not a fanboy.

D) I didn't say there are no such thing as Nintendo fanboys, rather, that they are no better or worse than any other fanboys. The persecution of Nintendo fans, though, is sickening. I find it distasteful that Nintendo fans are treated like pariah on boards like this, when the truth is, all fanboys are undercooked manchildren.
 
I really don't get the hate this system gets. It's a geek's dream. Does everything you could ask for in a handheld: games, music, movies, tv, emus, and homebrew. All on a kickass widescreen. Even if you're a Nintendo fan you got to admit that it's given Ninty a kick in the pants to keep innovating and competing with their handhelds. You guys should want Sony to stay in the market: Keeps the games flowing and the prices dropping.

BTW those of you who think the PSP is going away any time soon.... fat chance. It's already a success. Maybe not original Gameboy success but it's doing very well for Sony.

I play the PSP every single day as well.

My dream is a killer system with a killer library of games. PSP is only one of those (IMHO of course).

Hence my hate.

as for all of the extras, my ipod destroys the PSP as a music player, I am never in a position where I need a portable video player (hence my apathy towards ipod video as well), I burned myself out on emus probably 7 years ago (not to mention actually playing the games when they came out) and homebrew.... well, it's novel and we'll leave it at that.

I want a game system with a ton of great original games.
 
<3 PSP! how can you not like mem sticks? It is way better than the old method of paying $30 for 8mb that only works in one device. (or in the case of the cube $30 for 256k or whatever the silly low amount of memory the cards have)

N only fans are pathetic, the 'industry is doomed! we need a new wacky controller!' is a self fufilling prophecy swallowed only by the most blinded fanboy. No shit the cube is dying and gamers are bored with it! Try releasing some games nintendo!

The DS is finnaly starting to get some decent releases lined up and N fans act like it is the best thing ever! I personaly am waiting for a harware redesign. Honestly the best answer is to own both, why would anyone want to deny themselves the best games from both camps? Ironicaly all the games that intrest me on the DS are 3rd party (castlevania, FFIII remake, lost in blue).

PSP vs. DS is for Sony and Nintendo to worry about. Gamers get more options and competitive pricing (in theory). Why complain?

No kidding.

This thread was in part a reacton to all the calls out that the PSP was a failure. I don't know what definition of failure it fits in, reasonably.

Mine has jsutified its cost long ago. Now, I want a healthy future so I can continue to enjoy handheld gaming this much.
 
I love the screen.

I love the emulation.

I love watching tv shows on it on the airplane.

I love that it's not embarassing to play in public...unlike certain other systems.


But I don't think the games are that great on extended play. I wish it had a HD.

Here's to hoping GTA saves my feelings about it.

I disagree on the first sentiment. Of course I agree on the second. My annoyance comes from the fact that I should have waited til that happened and saved $30-70 in the process. :(
 
The people who think that the PSP's library is lacking are quite obviously the people who run around loving non-games and any WACKY JAPPY they can get their hands on. This is KNOWN. Look at their post history, for fucks sakes.
 
Why I like the PSP

1- Watching TV shows on the bus with a 1G MS
2- Metal Gear Ac!d (and other games of course)
3- Homebrew
5- Taking pictures with a Sony digicam to watch them on the PSP screen... always a showstopper.

Wi-fi internet access would be #4 except I'm still on 1.5... :P

This is elitist crap. Define "non-games." Say "Nintendogs," and I'll show you millions of Sims players, Tycoon series players, etc., etc. Say "Brain Training," and I'll show 100 million people who do the crossword and the jumble every morning.

If games and gamers don't fit into your narrow worldview, then that's your problem, not ours.

Maybe if I would have bought it at launch I'd be peeved too. But I just got it two weeks ago so there's a nice list of titles for me to choose. Come 6 months from now if I'm still playing SSX then there's a problem heh.
