Why I like the PSP

Flo_Evans said:
<3 PSP! how can you not like mem sticks? It is way better than the old method of paying $30 for 8mb that only works in one device. (or in the case of the cube $30 for 256k or whatever the silly low amount of memory the cards have)

Thats true of course. Memory cards suck. But Memory Stick Duo might as well be just as proprietary as far as I'm concerned. My k750i (a Sony phone) uses them but thats about it. And you talk as though they're cheap.

I read the "PSP w/ HD next year" rumors with the kind of absolute dejected horror written all over my face that could only appear when you feel a twinge of early adopter sting. The Giga Pack was met with a similar feeling.

I'd of taken SD cards over MSPD.

The people who think that the PSP's library is lacking are quite obviously the people who run around loving non-games and any WACKY JAPPY they can get their hands on. This is KNOWN. Look at their post history, for fucks sakes.
in other words, the people who tired of playing the PSPs library when it was first available on the PSX and PS2. gotcha.

I don't get a boner playing Wipeout on the PSP the same way I don't get a boner playing emus on the PSP or Mario64 on the DS. A full blown console game shrunk to portable does nothing for me. What does something are good games.

I stopped buying Ridge Racer on the PS2. Stopped buying Tony Hawk on the PS2. Stopped buying Wipeout on the PS2. The fact that they are now portable won't get me to buy them on the PSP.

Give me some great original games (Lumines and Locoroco) or some sequels that I am personally not tired of already (Dynasty Warriors if they ever lowered the frickin price) and then we can talk.

Meanwhile for me on the DS it has Kirby, Meteos, Nintendogs (believe it or not some peple actually like it), Castlevania (not tired of it), Puyo Pop, Phoenix Wright, Lost in Blue, Feel the Magic, etc.

My dream is a killer system with a killer library of games. PSP is only one of those (IMHO of course).

Hence my hate.

Why hate? I respect your right to not want to own a system because you feel the libary of games doesn't suit your taste, but why hate the system? The DS, for instance, has almost no games I'd condier playing, and I think it's tacky looking on top of that, but I don't hate it. It's just another system on the market that I won't buy. I feel the same way about the GameCube acutally. It's a nice system, has about a half dozen titles that might interest me, but not enough to buy one, but I don't hate the system because of that, nor do I troll against the GC or DS just because they lack appeal to me.

You lost this one when you claimed Wipeout Pure and Ridge Racers are bad games. Then on top of that tried to list Lost in Blue/Puyo Pop as a good ones.

I never claimed they were bad games. I said I got tired of them on the PS2. I am sure they are great games, but if you get bored with a series, it is difficult for even a better game in the series to draw you back. This is not exclusive to PSP games. Tekken, DOA, and Mario Party are further examples of this phenomenon.

Lost in Blue is fairly entertaining and I should fucking punch you in your god damn mouth for saying a single bad thing about the greatest game/series ever made. :D

The hate is more just that I didn't want to buy it, and it sat there on the shelf saying "Look at me. I'm sexy. You want to take me home with you and do things to me." I tried to resist, but it flashed its screen and buttons at me and got me to touch it. I took it home but then it ran off to the corner of the room and jerked off leaving me to watch. From that point on I felt I could never trust it again.

Ridge Racers is the reason I like PSP... thats about it. Easily the best racer in the last few years. Ridge Racer V and Rage Racer are still quite a bit better though if just for superior handling.

PSP doesn't have much I wanna play now.. I'd give anything for some Cave and Raizing shooter ports.

Wipeout Pure wasn't *shrunk down* from anywhere. It's a new game. And the best Wipeout, to boot. Wipeout Fusion-- the only PS2 Wipeout-- was a weak entry in the series.

It's not a case of Mario 64 at all.

If you are sick of the series, that's one thing. But it's not a port at all. It's the biggest Wipeout to date-- just happens to be on PSP.

And.... it's one of the reasons I love my PSP.

You're the one bringing the DS into it, not me. I'm making the simple statement that people who deride the above average library of the PSP are lacking in intelligence and taste. The library easily stands on it's own.

PSP has new Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

NEW FUCKING GHOULS 'N GHOSTS.

Everything else is just a gift.

Edit: I don't care how much of a Nintendo fan/Sony hater you are. New GnG, people! Tell me there isn't a single one of you who isn't excited about that!

Ahhh... I see. So it's more like you hate yourself for actually buying a system whose games you don't really like. Got it! :D

sigh. people really need to read what I type instead of only part of it and then responding to what they think they read.

I never said it was a port. Wipeout could be the shit, but it is still just another game in the series. I am bored with the series, and I played the shit out of the first few games for it. Just don't find it fun anymore. I passed on the PS2 game and passed on the PSP. Just like I wouldn't buy a Mario Party on the DS (although an online one might be tempting)

Ask yourself why you are posting all this hate in a thread titled "Why I like the PSP"

Look in the mirror and ask yourself that question.

The thread title isn't a question by the way, it's a statement. Remember that.

Sorry. I thought this was "Impulsive Early Adopters Anonymous" or IEAA. My bad.

edit - and technically what you quoted wasn't hate. I was explaining why I don't like certain games. I hate the PSP because it made me feel dirty. I don't buy any games for it because aside from the $50 Dynasty Warriors there aren't any that interest me. That's not hate. Just opinion.

Hey, you have buyers remorse and you don't like it. I'm fine with that, but why do you have to be in EVERY PSP thread showing your discontent and arguing with people? You do realize people have different tastes right? If you come into a pro-PSP thread and start shit what are you expecting? Well, I think people know what they are expecting it's just getting so freaking old now.

and why do many of the "good posterS" in this thread do the same thing in DS threads?

and thus is GAF. It is a way to pass the day. I am not getting venomous with anyone, providing entertainment to some (at my own expense many times), and carrying on honest conversations with others (some PSP lovers even. gasp) Something doesn't get old, it gets annoying, and one has to ask themself why they let something annoy them, especially when I am not (at least I don't think) particularly beligerent about it.

So if I am actually offending or upsetting you somehow, I sincerely apologize. If it doesn't bother you and you in fact don't care about it one way or another, then why bother calling me on it.

Besides, in this thread I think I have more openly and civilly explained my position on PSP then ever before on the board. that has to count for something, right? :P

It wasn't clear whether you thought Wipeout was scaled down or not. Anyone who didn't know might have thought it was, especially since you liken it to Tony Hawk.

And I won't speak for anybody else in the thread, but I've actually defended the DS more often than I've dismissed it, and the dismissal is almost always IMHO.

Particularly at the time when every new DS game was criticized for its graphics (which I don't regard as that important to a game-- I'm the anti-gfx-whore, generally).

Do me the same courtesy in my thread.

in that vein, I have actually complimented the PSP a few times in this thread. It is a slick piece of hardware and the screen is gorgeous. If I cared about media or emulation it would be considerably more convenient to do it on there that even my XBox and definitely PC.

That is why I would love my PSP.

Borghe ,This exactly applies to DS games as well , Kirby Canvas, Yoshi touch and go and princess peach, all these are just other games In there respective series or spin offs. If you didn't like them then, you won't like them now. I own both a PSPand a NDS and thet both get played In peaks and valley's. Right now the NDs has better original efforts (Lost In Blue and under the knife), But some times certain psp spin offs come off better on the portable (to me atleast Burn Out and X-Men ledgends II I could play these all day).

It bothers me because it distracts from real topics. This particular thread I could honestly do without and fully expect it closed soon. They do nothing but attract trolls and nothing good ever come of them. There were a couple earlier threads though that this same stuff was coming up over and over again in what could have been good threads but ended up closed. If it's happening in DS threads too then it needs to stop there as well. Honestly though I am willing to bet it is much more prominent in PSP threads from what I have seen.

Why, funny you should mention that, just today I was able to persuade to Gamespot join me as co-arch shill. I got them to call it "the best Sonic game in nearly a decade." Your timing is impeccable sir!

Unfortunately, you haven't been doing your part and hating on Sonic Rush as much as Nintendogs, but there's still time for you to make sure you contribute to both its critical and commercial success!

Why i like the PSP:

- LUMotherfuckingINES
- Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Lufia, Secret of Mana, hell.. SNES emu!
- GTA in just 4 days
- Upcoming titles: Loco Roco, Katamari Damacy, Extreme G&G, Every Extend Extra, Tales of Eternia, Field Commander, Legend of Heroes, Breath of Fire 3 etc.
- Downloadable Content

sort of off topic, but how is PSP SSX? I was about to buy it the other day but it was $50 fuckin bucks!

Is it all new (ala GTA:LCS) or just a port of the latest PS2 version? I haven't really bought a SSX game since the PS2 launch... and unfortunatly I live in the flatlands where the only ski slops are shitty golf course hills.

It is a port of SSX3.

For some reason no publication ever explained this in previews or reviews.

That's what I said, pleast don't quote me out of context.

If it's happening in DS threads too then it needs to stop there as well.

My meaning of it being more prevalent in PSP threads has more to do with the outcry from the Ncrowd of sony biased and Nintendo fans being banned for trolling in PSP topics.

There's no better way to tell that something has arrived than to measure the amount of zeal and effort that its "passionate detractors" put into downplaying it. It's a necessary evil, I guess, because it would be far more chilling to consider what the prospects for the PSP might be like if it had been received instead like the Tapwave Zodiac, for example. But when a device like the PSP has the ability to so effortlessly polarize discussion, you know its got a bright future.

And, of course the same applies in a general sense to any other device that evokes the same behavior.

Also, if this is a support group, then its as much for the detractors as it for the fans because, without the PSP, I'm not sure how some of the detractors would survive without the outlet they feel they are afforded by it to vent as much passionate dissent as they do, no matter how misplaced it may be.

In closing, a few of my favorite PSP things: Star Soldier, Wipeout Pure, Lumines, Twisted Metal, Gripshift, Squarez v0.8+, Bookr v0.6+, Fastloader v0.7+, sleep mode, non-trivial firmware updates, 1 Gig MSDuos under $100, portable game jukebox, sound quality, widescreen, downloadable content, game editors and user-created content...and the list goes on.

It's the old tracks. But it's not put together as big or nice. Seriously, DO NOT buy it for $50. Ok game, but with camera issues, etc. it's not worth full price :(

I love my PSP. Best portable ever imo.

- The games are awesome. I own Midnight Club 3 which is awesome (bad loadtimes though), Metal Gear Ac!d is great and Lumines is pure simple fun. A true to console GTA is always welcome.

- Its my main music player. Yeah I know Ipod is better but I really don't need to carry 2 portables at the same time and with the PSP I got the best of both worlds.

- Movies look fantastic on it

I can't really say Im completely turned off by the DS though. I wanna play Nintendogs but that's just because of the novel factor.

Borghe, why do you still own a PSP if you don't use it and don't like the games on it? You know what i do with systems i lose interest in? I sell them instead of making post after post lamenting my purchase and slamming the system. I owned a GC for a year and a half and only enjoyed a couple of games on it. Instead of constantly bitching about it, i sold it and continued to play my other systems.

I'm going to try to convince my friend to GIVE me his PSP since he hasn't used it in many months. He thinks UMDs are a waste of money. He is also too lazy to buy a USB cable and too lazy/poor to get a memory stick. So the only thing he used it for was to play NFS and MGA. I told him to get Lumines, but he wouldn't listen to me...

Sonic Rush looks like it could be a lot of fun. I'm really hoping it turns out!

Visually speaking, I'm disappointing in the lack of parallax layers in the background. Sonic games always featured such rich backgrounds, but these look so plain.

When it the Japanese release date, BTW?

wth

Untold Legends, Star Soldier, Sengoku Cannon, Megaman X remake, etc. are great PSP games? That's the same as saying Feel the Magic, Lost in Blue, Lunar DS, etc. makes the DS library worthwhile.

:lol
