Why in the world don't they make a kickstarter for Shenmue 3?

I think the truth is nobody wants to make this goddamn game.

The game dreamt about for so much time, sequel to a 14 year old game (ie : freaking dated in every aspect), pioneer only of things that nowadays have become utterly commonplace, or disliked, or irreplicable with today's production values and scale expectations (meaning you'd just look like you're doing what everyone else is doing but less good).

All of this only to be hated to death because you'd never live up to the fan's expectation.

Same reason for Half-Life 3.

I don't know I always considered to be one of the first nongames, but those "nongames" are what we call AAA/cinematic experiences these days, so what do I know. I do remember being incredibly bored by it. The whole open the drawer, take out your wallet, put it in your pocket, close the drawer, open the next one, take out your watch, comment on every single thing you see/touch. "Meet me in the corner in eight hours", the constant running back and forth and back and forth, etc didn't seem too gamey to me. But yeah this has nothing to do with what the OP is asking so I apologize.

Even though I can see where you're coming from, I'll never understand this 'non game' notion. Why, for instance, do I never hear that criticism when it comes to games like FFX? (all you do is press x and watch godawful cutscenes, it's basically just an interactive movie and a horrible one at that) What exactly makes a game a game?

And no need to apologize, at least you took the time to make your point.

Sounds like Shenmue.

Shenmue had constant tutorials? Didn't know that.

I don't know either, OP. We tried to tell them.

I honestly have faith we'll see a kickstarter Shenmue 3 at some point within the next few years. Yu Suzuki has hinted it too many times in interviews this year for me to believe nothing will happen. You can tell it bothers him he never got the greenlight to finish the series due to various circumstances out of his hands.

I believe something will happen via kickstarter to finish the story line, whether game, or comic. I don't care just let me know what happens. But I know the second a kickstarter happens it will break records for kickstarter games.

ShenmueDojo remains powerful.

it would probably get to 150k tops

There should be a kickstarter for Final Fantasy VII Remake before Shenmue 3

Doesn't Sega own the Shenmue IP? Because if so it would be silly for a big company to use Kickstarter to fund a game, especially one that has a very small fan base.

hahaha this thread... I wish i saw their reaction when it was announced

Because people would think it's evil and greedy for big companies to ask for funding through Kickstarter and they'd rather not have their favourite game released at all.

I realize no publishers (especially Sega) want to fund this game. But the Shenmue community is so die hard and dedicated, that I really think this game would get funded extremely fast, even with a budget in the millions. Personally, I'm not even that wealthy, but I would absolutely contribute at least $1000 for Shenmue 3. I love the series that much, and I think a lot of other Shenmue fans feel the same way. What's preventing a kickstarter for this game? I know Yu Suzuki even mentioned that he was interested in it. Those sailors aren't going to find themselves goddamnit!

Still making this face, OP?

The FFIIV Remake got announced first at the conference right? So technically that poster was correct :P

Love seeing this, but let's be fair to all the skeptics. A kickstarter alone never would have worked for SM3 without Sony putting in their money. I see the KS as a nice marketing campaign where fans have the option of taking part before the game is out, and I don't mind being part of that one bit :)

Heh, as soon as the KS happened people were posting screenshots of threads / comments like this. I didn't know you could kick a thread so old. Still, it's pretty neat. I think Adam Boyes was instrumental and that's how it happened, since obviously Sony wanted to "check off the list." It was just at the bottom of reasonable things to do (since let's be honest, Shenmue 2 was a bust; for lots of different reasons; and no investor in their right mind would sign off on 3 without a good reason).
