Why is everyone basically expecting a FFVII PS3 remake WHEN...

...it is plainly stated that they do not take an interest in a FF7 remake? Rather, they say that they need to figure out a way to wrap up the compilation of FFVII.

Tetsuya Nomura for his part explained that once the development of Kingdom Hearts II was completed, he would move on to a new project. He ruled out that this new project would be a remake of Final Fantasy VII, and simply put he would not work on a remake or sequel. The success of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and the possibility to display the world of Final Fantasy VII with today's technology, gave him a boost of confidence.

I recall this article because initially, lots of people here (and elsewhere) seemed to think a FF7 remake was very possible for some reason.

My question is: Why? I want a FF7 remake as much as the next guy, the game has aged terribly. But I don't think it is going to happen.

Milkman ftw!

But the one I linked to is more recent (November; yours is September).
Maybe the date on the one I linked to is inaccurate.

I doubt he changed his mind in 2 months

Well, we know that Kitase/Toriyama (not Akira :D) and Division 1 should be fairly deep into FFXIII production by now...

Kitase himself said that if a FFVII remake were to happen, chances are Nomura would be in charge...

Nomura has mentioned he has 'multiple new projects' going on right now, yet, strangely, he also said none would be revealed this year. What I want to know is- since when did fucking Nomura start to decide what Square-Enix would show and what they wouldn't show?

I imagine S-E will want to be pimping PS3/360 productions @ E3 and TGS this year, especially with their top tier games (KHII, FFDoC, and FFXII) having all been released in Japan prior to both these shows. I just don't see S-E only showing more FFXI updates, Crisis Core, and Itadaki Street PSP for the next year.

Let's hope so. FFXIII PS3 launch!! :D

Who knows, but that's a good thing. That tells me that Enix isn't being as snobby as I've heard, and is actually showing more respect to Square's side than I once thought. It's pretty cool that they trust him to do whatever without him having to submit his deadlines and announcements to them beforehand.

Yeah but... how many PS3/360 productions are they going to have?

360 will probably get FFXI, and that's it. So PS3 has to have SOMETHING.

Kitase has practically confirmed that FFXIII will be for the PS3 (just without actually calling it "Final Fantasy XIII". Remember, he did the same thing with FFX for a while :D He just called it "FF for the PS2" back in '99.)

It's also worth noting that Motomu Toriyama has been confirmed to be attached to FFXIII/FF PS3 (with Kitase having an active producer/supervising role)- and the man hasn't been attached to another project since FFX-2 in 2002/2003. FFXIII was first hinted as being in 'early production' by Wada since 2003.
Seeing the way Kitase has worked in the past, I'd expect FFXIII to be fairly far along when we see it for the first time, ala FFX. This is also considering Square-Enix was among the first to get PS3 dev kits... and Division 1 is still the 'big money maker' for the company (it gets the most funds allocated, apparently). I'm guessing TGS, although a teaser at E3 would be nice. It would also be a big boost for PS3's "official" coming out party, but realistically I'd expect TGS or around TGS.

It doesn't seem to say they are uninterested or it won't happen, just that the next project wasn't going to be it (nor a sequel or remake). I generally don't think it's safe to confirm or deny things based off someone elses interpretation of something that was said (certainly not when they have different native langauges) -- real quote that says "no, ff7 remake will not happen" or bust.

Wow, 2003?

Thing is... Square could've only done so much up to this point. How much could they have possibly done on early PS3 hardware?

Plenty, cell based, sm3.0.
I'm soooo out of the loop with PS3 hardware. I was on top of PS2 hardware discussion before it launched, but PS3 is so complex.

What's sm3.0?

Also... the comment I quoted is confusing as hell.

He ruled out that this new project would be a remake of Final Fantasy VII, and simply put he would not work on a remake or sequel.
This tells me: no FF7 remake.

The success of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and the possibility to display the world of Final Fantasy VII with today's technology, gave him a boost of confidence.
This tells me: maybe there will be.

Give us a straight answer :\

I think it's shader model 3, (a bit above it, based on nvidia's implementation from what I've heard). It means the ps/vs abilities are basically the same(assuming derivative of g70-1 which everyone's expecting.). Aka, earlier h/w is pretty much just as feature rich as ps3 h/w only slower/weaker. IIRC.

well, I imagine a lot of production design stuff might be done (characters/scenario/locations/gameplay ideas/etc.)- so chances are they started the technical work spring 2005 (after making the FFVII tech demo for E3). For all we know they have a detailed demo ready now, but maybe they don't want to infringe on FFXII's release? That was one of the big reasons FFX went on a total media black-out for almost a whole year since it's first small showing. Squaresoft was concerned it would have a negative impact on FFIX (which I still think it did).

Look at it this way. FFX started production in 1999. Kitase and co. were able to get a pretty impressive real-time demo up and running in time for the Millenium Conference at the end of Jan. 2000 (about 3 months before PS2 launched). The game completed in the spring of 2001, with a July 2001 release in Japan.

I really don't doubt we'll see some kind of teaser this year, be it E3 or TGS, with maybe a playable version by E3 '07.
Then again, maybe PS3 development will be a lot more thick and it will take longer for all big productions as has been predicted? We really won't know until we hear about it directly. :D

it would seriously be the biggest waste of resources ever...why would you wanna waste all that money and talent with your past shit..people need to move on.

Well I'll tell you one thing... I would LOVE to play through FFVII again, but its one of those games I find unplayable today. I would be first in line for a remake Twin Snakes style (only not bad).

Ah. ps/vs abilities? Again, I'm a PS3 hardware n00b. So... basically if they already developed stuff it conforms to the same development model, so tweaking it would be fairly easy. Good to know.

Damn FFXII. See, delaying this game is a huge problem in many regards. The fact it has taken so long for FFXII to get out the door probably pushed back some FFXIII development too. If not development, then when it is to be released. I know the teams are seperate, but they have to let FFXII stay on the market long enough before they just release another one, right? How long was the gap between FFIX US and FFX US?

Very true.

That's sucks if true. But then again Squeenix probably doesn't want them taking any attention away from FFXII.

Of course it'll be more "thick" than PS2... so it could take longer. But if Square was one of the first devs to have it, they might be well ahead of the learning curve. Hard to say for sure, Sony hasn't finalized devkits yet, have they?

Why not?
Square's games >> movies, in terms of popularity and profitability. Especially FFVII.
Advent Children bored a lot of FF7 fans. A remake on the other hand would not.

I find myself afraid of what Square will do to FFVII with a remake, yet I'm still in favor of it. Instead of Sephiroth being the end guy, they'll find some way to put in a revived Hojo Rufus President ShinRa hybrid as the REAL enemy only to have Jenova cast Holy from Aeris' posessed zombody. Or something.

Yeah, they have to do it right.

To make even more money? I mean who wouldn't buy a remake of one of Square's most popular games? Final Fantasy VII fans would buy it again for nostalgic purposes and people who didn't play the original would get it to see what was all the fuss about. The timing would be perfect (right after FFVII:AC and the PS3 launch).

I don't like Final Fantasy VII very much. Personally, I think the game hasn't aged very well. However, I would buy a remake if it was done right.

FFXIII was first hinted as being in 'early production' by Wada since 2003.

FYI, this is not true and comes from a mistranslation of Wada's remarks at a press conference. Square Enix never officially commented on FFXIII (until the recent talk of a PS3 FF), although it was strongly rumored to have entered pre-production around spring 2004.

I'd buy that. :lol
