Why is the Firefox download manager so slow/resource intensive?>

I've got a fairly slow PC (P4 1.4ghz), and I'm running Firefox 1.0.6. Ever since I started using Firefox, the main thing that's bugged me is the goddamned download manager. If you ever try and open it, it takes forever to load, and is super resource intensive. Is there some way to fix this?

Danke.

It's a piece of crap, also tends to cut off downloads halfway and declared 'download finished' way too often.

Then you're downloading too many large files from ftp sources w/out an ftp client and the resume function or from a direct link. Downloads cutting off is quite common regardless of browser. It has to do with the servers and the connection sometimes cutting off a download midway. Then agian, this is only really a problem with really large files.

The problem that I've had is slowdown when I have too many files listed in my download history. A clearing of it solves the problem.

There should be an option for this.
Yes, it's in the Downloads section in the Preferences dialog.

And I agree that it's slow. But I don't care anymore, since I upgraded my computer to Athlon XP 2600+ with 512MB ram. :lol :D

I use Linux, and I use the command wget sometimes in the terminal. It's so awesome and simple. It even has a resume function!

Try again, the files download just fine when I use IE.

I'm on a 750 Mhz PC, and the download manager isn't slow for me at all. Not even in the slightest.
Well, when the download dialog 'appears', its rendered kinda slow. Which is real stupid. You can tell it's slow.

Have you tried clearing your list of previously downloaded files? I find that when that list gets long, the downloads window starts having problems appearing.

BTW, wget is also available for Windows. It really is the best way to download files.

One more thing...I've noticed that when the downloads.rdf that remembers past downloads in ones Firefox profile becomes corrupted the downloads manager starts opening very, very slowly. A surefire sign of a corrupted downloads.rdf file is if it's many KB in size...like, in the hundreds or thousands of KB. Just delete it, and see how that effects things.
