Why isn't there freecam in GTA? (And other gripes)

In this day and age shouldn't GTA games have freecam? Right-analog is assigned to that useless first-person cam, when freecam control would be much more beneficial for run & gun situations. Thanks to FP-aiming and the lack of freecam it's not even possible to run & gun without using lock-on. The controls should be something more like 3rd-person shooters (eg. Battlefront). This is one of the only flaws that holds the series back for me.

Other minor gripes:

- No constant music mode; the protagonist should have a discman or an ipod so the music doesn't cut out every damn time he steps out of a car.

- No online play. How difficult is this to implement? Even a free-for-all mode without missions would be a damn good bonus for those who get sick or bored of the SP mode.

- Crappy hand-to-hand combat. Something like Fable's "fight club" sequences would do nicely.

- Escort missions suck ass and need to die.

- No jetskis???

Aside from Online play some of these issues may have already been addressed by San Andreas, which is due out later this month, but I haven't heard anything.

Oh, and one thing that bothered me about GTA3 in particular:

- Frickin mob goons with shotties in Portland area of GTA3 in the later section of the game made cruising around Portland near impossible.

I think they fixed that for GTA:SA

The fighting and camera have been fixed. As for online play, it's going to be in GTA4. That's been their stance on it all this gen.

Have a fun! Enjoy!
Indeed. You can freely rotate the camera with the right analog stick in San Andreas. Either on foot or on a vehicle.

I guess when they do it, they want to do it right. Good for them. Hopefully they take their time and make the ultimate online title.

Have you played a lot of Rockstar games? There's really nothing "ultimate" about them.

Given your position in the gaming media, I would have hoped that you had made the realization that Rockstar != developers of GTA (no matter how much TakeTwo wants you to think that it's all the same).

That said, I really don't understand why some people outright demand an online mode for GTA. The game really doesn't lend itself to any sort of interesting multiplayer modes. Co-op is the only thing that might be promising.

I think alot of the improvements they made to SA were kind of a set up for the online mode. Having to keep your character in shape, building games, houses, cars, multiple fighting styles ect.

Cops 'n' Robbers team-play. With the ability to have autos filled up with players. Team drive-by with the Escalade. Or assault with the SWAT van. Objective-based modes would make it perfect. Rob the bank. Stop the thugs from robbing the bank, and failing that, stop them from making an escape. Free for all mode would be nice and chaotic. So many possibilities...

First of all, it's not like if there's music while you play in GTA3, Vice and againt probably San Andreas. It's to tell you that there's music through the radio of the vehicles and not to accompagny your journey. The only way to have constant music that would please me in this exact game is if we can put on some headset and listen to a diskman or something.
The point of this setting of music is to help immerse in the game.
You have the right to wish you listen to music constantly for sure, but i tell you it would be a design flaw in this particular game. Ask yourself again who's really missing the point.

Well, it should at least be an option. Quite often in GTA3 I was listening to something and wanted to hear the rest of it, yet had to get out of the car for some reason. I'd love for the character to be able to buy a walkman or something in-game and put it on when he leaves a car. Personally, I'd also love to see a feature where you could have the character change to a certain radio station automatically every time he enters a car. I hated always having to flip through the radio just to get back to the station I was listening to.

Why did you remove the "IGN" from your name? It made it a lot easier to disregard your posts...

Seriously, this guy is the biggest troll on GAF.

Don't worry about him, guy seems to hate everything, in fact I bet he'd hate his own mother if she was somehow linked to Mortal Kombat or GTA/Rockstar.

That sounds like a nice idea, except that during the course of the game you are stealing random vehicles, which by the way used to belong to other people, so when you enter them they will be playing that certain NCP's music style.

It would make sense if you own the car and have had it in your garage or safehouse, but not on every single car you encounter.

The ability to listen to music only in cars creates a pretty good sense of immersion. I wouldn't like it any other way.

The original GTA at least let the player decide for himself which music mode was better. How is having more options a bad thing?

The *snip* camera have been fixed.

They've said it before with GTA:VC, didn't really see the difference. I would rather have the right analog stick being used to target multiple targets than using L2/R2. This would allow for aiming targets on multiple planes, and much more easier to handle. I don't think there have been any movies with the new weapon aiming camera, so I'm expecting little change.

As for changing radio stations, I agree, although I'm sure that's the last thing you'd want to think of once you jack a car. I think if you're going to have some fun with it, have CJ listen for about a minute, then have him go into a tirade, then change the station. But what if you like all music? Would then put the preferences on the pause/option screen... decisions decisions...
