Why should I get a PSP?

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee is out on a console? Really?

You know, Mario Kart is also out on consoles, too! And Castlevania! Advance Wars is out on the GBA!

:lol Game, set, match.

Nevermind originality.

Because originality=good game mechanics!

I like originality as much as the next guy but sheesh, it's not a blanket statement to be used to look past good game mechanics, which is more important than originality.

The best DS game is Castlevania anyway, which is an awesome game!! Not original enough? Screw that!! Just give me awesome game design and mechanics that is Castlevania.

And no, there aren't any better golf games out there.

Open Tee isn't, but four other forgetable ones are.

Oh but you're right, those games are also out on GBA.. which the DS can play :)

Hrm, so five titles I'm interested in, although 3/5 of them are somewhat downgraded ports of PS2 games. :\

You just pushed me towards sticking with the PS2. :p

My post was pretty good, but Matix's was downright excellent. Back-to-back PSP ownage. Just buy the damn thing Matlock and thank us later.

Wow - didn't see his when I posted. Great gaming all around. :D

If you're not remotely interested in the type games comming out for it, then save youself some cash and don't buy one.

The two best DS games are incredibly unoriginal -- Advance Wars DS and Castlevania DoS. The rest of the library is downright Schaivo-esque.

Phoenix Wright would like a word with you.

Wait, are we counting games that are still coming or are already out? Cause the New Super Mario Bros. bitch slaps every single one of those games 3 ways from Sunday.

Other than that, you MIGHT be right :).

For you maybe. Playing SMB3 on my PSP trumps that.

Laugh out loud!

And what about the ones that you named for the PSP?

I believe you said this in a previous thread that contradicts this statement!

Trauma Center Praise!

It's good! It makes the best use of the stylus yet -- perhaps even better than the mediocre Kirby Canvas Curse. I've reviewed it for Computer Games magazine, so I'm not gonna compromise a magazine sale just for you twerps, but here's a quick rundown of what ROX and SUX:ROX:
-- imaginative, varied scenarios
-- tightly integrated dexterity puzzles that go well beyond simple minigame-style antics into the realm of actual depth and the development of technique
-- hilariously absurd plot and dialogue
-- eminently replayable through the archive mode, with a really solid ranking system for performance
-- PSYCHIC DOCTOR POWERZ!

Trauma Center is so vastly more polished and rewarding that it isn't even funny.

Hence at least some of the games on the DS are worth playing!

... sorry too much Phoenix Wright. :D

PSP games cost 50 fuckin dollars. I have one and the only game I own is Metal Gear Ac!d.

I'm waiting for Exit, Ghouls and Ghosts, Legend of Heroes (maybe), and Metal Gear Ac!d 2.

Personally I find the loading times absolutely unbearable after playing games off the memory stick. The system is too impractical for day to day use and you're constantly fighting with it. It's a severely crippled system that doesn't even play games well. I haven't seen loading times like these since the days of the old C64. The only fun I've gotten out of it was from teh Haxx0r and shit.

Also you should be able to put games on hold and have access to the media features. The whole console has so many oversights that even the face buttons and d-pad are unresponsive pieces of shit. Play darkstalkers on there and try to execute a super-move in a clutch situation. You have like 30% chance of pulling it off. Especially if it requires you press more than one face button.

I didn't even mention the blurry screen. People cry over how they're not getting 2d GOTY candidate titles like Dawn of Sorrow yet the screen has so much motion blur you wouldn't even be able to see the beautiful details. I've played SNES, and Neo CD games on there and the motion blur was quite apparent.

The battery life is pretty good though. A lot better than I ever expected it to be.

I believe Phoenix Wright (Gyakuten Saiban) was originally a series of GBA games that were only released in Japan.

Hmm... I see.
Well, Drinky? Please change your testimony so that it includes the evidence we've just heard.

Bah, you know the drill.

The first PW is GS1 + an original DS case. ;)

But let's not get into the ports argument.

I will buy a PSP the day the a 2D Castlevania is released for it. That's all that's needed for me to get on board.

My brother picked up the DS, so luckily I get to play Castlevania on his system. Oh, and Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center rule!

Nintendogs isn't a game. It's a collection of canned animation routines for folks with allergies or social disorders.

I bet you get all antsy inside when you think about how well the game sold :)

Hmm.. if that's the case.. 2 million.

Sony fanboys are overprotective and in denial. At least most Nintendo fanboys admit that nintendo does shitty decisions most of the time.

DS is a POS techwise, but denying the fact that it has a very solid lineup and an even more solid release schedule is just insane.

PSP on the other hand, has a shitty lineup but has a solid future lineup.

From my perspective: There's no really good reason not to get a PSP, downgrade to 1.5, and take advantage of the decent (but flawed and essentially abandoned) emulators that provide access to great 8- and 16-bit games. No good reason except for the fact that the friggin' D-pad and buttons are among the worst I've used since an old PS1 Mad Catz controller -- spongy and mushy and cheap. How do you design a system so well and skimp on the most crucial parts, the controls?!

I've been playing Earthbound Zero and Earthbound on the PSP today, and by the end of it I was ready to give up and get out the damn SNES. Any game that requires diagonals is hell.

Joke's on you. You can't compare them since one's a shitty game, and the other's a shitty NON-game. ;)

Edit: Okay, I haven't played Nintendogs, but I just don't like puppy sims. Sue me!

1) Nintendogs isn't based on a License that was hot at the time. It's a new IP.
2) Nintendogs still sells well, Matrix had an initial huge sale spike and then went no where fast when people realized it was shit
3) DS userbase is a tiny fraction of GC/PS2/XBOX userbase
4) Nintendogs actually has good ratings
5) Anyone who bought Enter the Matrix is tool.

Shit, dissect the guy's post from here to Baghdad if it makes you feel better. He's simply stating that games can sell shit tons and still be crap, and why that may not pertain to Nintendogs (to you, at least) he does have a point.

You shouldnt unless there are enough games you want for it.

Somewhat regret getting mine because Ridge Racer is still the only real keeper for the system. PSP's lineup is bad enough for people to glorify shit like Untold Legends. Gradius collection and Tokobot cant come soon enough.

The fact that the system is crap to control with is pretty much unforgivable though. PSP SP with actually responsive dpad and halfway decent analog nub would be nice..

If you're real big on innovation, new IPs and handheld gaming in general I'd lean towards the Ds. However, if you want a system that can combine your laptop and your mp3 player with a nifty peice of gaming hardware, the PSP is perfectly fine. I'd rather play GTA on the road than some of the crap you people call "Innovation"......

Say it with me

"BUT I'M NOT INTERESTED IN ANY OF THOSE PSP GAMES"

Best argument ever -- it works on any console! re: "I'M NOT INTERESTED IN ANY OF THOSE DS GAMES"

Drinky Crow said:
if you have a DS, it's not a portable system. You can't play it in public.
:lol

The DS library has been great as long as I've owned one. Several games to get excited about, too. The PSP library is admirable, but I don't own one so no comment otherwise. I caved a little more on hearing that Gradius PSP was coming... then grew angry when I saw that it was a 'mere' group of ports. Emulation capabilities are very attractive.

[edit] Oh yeah, G&G PSP! I neeeed that.

If you've got a DS, that's all you'll need for the next few months for a handheld. Especially if you're on a budget.

i'm thinking of getting a PSP (again) early next year. Has there been a date set for the Giga Pack in the US? Also, are they releasing the white PSP here?

Edit: Just realized the Giga Pack is basically the regular pack plus a 1GB Memory Stick. With PSP and MS 1GB MS Duo price as low as they are online, you're better off buying things separately. Unless they release a white PSP...

I've got both.

Get the DS if you want games.
Get the PSP if you want nifty features.

When all is said and done, I find myself using the DS more.

The PSP is, I don't want to say designed poorly, but there are certain aspects about it that I don't like other than the pretty horrible software lineup. First and foremost, it's not very comfortable to hold. Extended periods of play give me cramps, and the glossy finish they put on it gives me sweaty hand syndrome pretty quickly. The analog stick (though it's not really a stick, i'd call it a plate) is poorly placed. It's below the d-pad, in the bottom left corner of the system, and to me it just feels awkward. Had it been placed above the d-pad, I don't think there'd be any problems with it.

Also, the speakers aren't very good. For some reason, the sound comes out of 2 tiny holes at the bottom of the system, and even with the volume turned all the way up it isn't very loud. Of course, headphones solves this matter but sometimes you're just in the mood to play without them.

Finally, the d-pad is a piece of shit. It's not only unresponsive sometimes (my up button sometimes takes 2 or 3 presses to register), but it's STIFF. Playing Darkstalkers on it is a joke. Street Fighter Alpha 3 PSP looks cool, but who the fuck would want to play it with a d-pad this miserable?

I don't have any issues with the DS hardware besides it not being very powerful... And that isn't a flaw, it's a choice. The d-pad is superb, the button placement is fine, and the speakers are by far the best of any handheld I've ever owned. I wouldn't mind the face buttons being a tad bigger, but it's not really an issue.

Overall, I'm happy with my PSP. It's a fine technical achievement and can do a lot of cool shit. I just wish they would've focused on perfecting some of the most practical, but also most important aspects- such as the d-pad and whatever the fuck causes it to give me cramps after extended play periods.

Drinky/MAF: So DS has shitty 64-era graphics. Who gives a flying fuck if the games deliver? Which they have been. Why can't you just say, you know what.... PSP excels at this, while DS excels at that. Sony and Nintendo obviously have two different mindsets in regards to DS/PSP, so why can't you respect that and shut your damn mouths?

Get the PSP if you want nifty features.
This thread says otherwise. I didn't quite realize just how awesome the upcoming PSP library really is. Can you really look at that list above and say it's not about the games?

Just like PS2, it started out slow, but it looks to be picking up fast...
