Why should I get a PSP?

Matlock said:
Just as a review, I went over the "OMG GOTTA GET THESE GAMES" lists and filtered out the ones I don't give a crap about. I came up with this list.

Extreme Ghouls & Ghosts
Katamari Damacy
Loco Roco
Ridge Racers
Gradius
Daxter

Also, fuck what you think about this thread. When I troll, I troll big, and not with an innocent question.
Oh shit, Matlock be throwing down, son.

Seriously, though, do those six games not warrant a purchase for you? If they do not, you have the answer to your thread. End of story.

but yeah, psp price drop + GH line up would make it very attractive. don't think it'll make it a 'flawless victory' though...maybe

Flawless victory slipped away when most of Japan figured out they didn't want a PSP.

Forget about the DS for a second in Japan. From what I've read the core packs have all but disappeared in Japan for months. This is when you saw the PSP drop from around 50K a week to 30K. I don't think the DS impacted it much at all. The lack of a core pack has. Once the price goes down the volume will go up. Will it pass the DS in Japan? Doubtful. But it doesn't have too.

if the PSP even drops...people expected a price drop before christmas and we get an increase :lol

This is gaf, we must speak in extremes! I see Sony still eating up a considerable amount of marketshare from Nintendo. The PSP2 is the really Nportable killa of course. ;)

But anyway, extremely enjoyable thread. Now I understand why Drinky makes his regulary scheduled troll threads.

Oh, and the DS is fighting a losing battle against the PSP. The only reason the DS is BARELY outselling the PSP at the moment is because the system is half the price.
Considering that it came back from being down by 200k units a month to being slightly on top within 2 months, I don't think that price appears to be the sole reason here.

Cue Reggie e3 pic I guess.

I'm actually rather surprised that the PSP hasn't totally smoked the DS, nor do I think that it ever will, ultimately... but it has secured itself a place in the handheld market, and deserves props for succeeding where so many others failed.

This is true. I also like how the 2 platforms are so clearly positioned apart from each other. Much more than ps2, xbox and gc. Makes it easier to justify owning both.

Maybe?

I am pretty sure the Giz can not overcome that.

People don't seem to realize how much of an accomplishment this is. Nintendo has ruled the handheld market far, far longer than they have the console market, and with a much more dominant grip.

Before the PSP was released, all the Nintendo fanboys were saying the PSP was the massive underdog, and that Nintendo had defeated so many rivals in the handheld sector. Now that both systems have taken major portions of the market, everyone is acting like they expected the PSP to blow Nintendo out of the water. :/

Don't get a PSP. You don't like most of the top-quality games (coming) out for it, you write off its features, so there is no point.

Well Sony fans have never been in this situation before, they've always had a smooth ride. They're uncertain how to react :p

Remember when PSP was announced...DS was doomed Nintendo was doomed. When PSP launched...DS was doomed Nintendo was doomed.

How the times have changed :lol
Remember NFans reactions to the PSP announcement? Sony is dead, no handheld will ever be able to compete with a Nintendo product, Sony don't know what they're doing, crash and burn etc. etc.
PSP is inhibited by its price. Its a long-term product that should win this "race". Not that it matters, its a GOOD thing that both are doing well.

Sure, if you want to remember history incorrectly.

The real truth lies in the middle somewhere.

Oh, not all. I always had the intention to get the PSP on day 1. And I did. Within a month of its release, I had 7 PSP games (5 on launch day!). At the same time as I got my 7th PSP game, I only had about 8 or 9 DS games (and I got the DS on day 1 as well).

Nope, don't remember that.

But I'm sure Drinky made a thread at PSP's announcment proclaiming Nintendo's death. With his minions following him and agreeing with him.

Well shit then. I got nothing. Daxter is gay.

Videogame forum history is obviously subjective, but that is how I remember it. I'm not "remembering incorrectly."

For that matter, believe it or not, I was one of the people who thought the DS would destroy the PSP before release.

Eh? A lot of Nbots thought the PSP was the first real threat to the Nintendo handheld brand. Not sure where you got this. Maybe they were that way with the Ngage, but that's about it.

I've said this ever since last year in 2004: Pokemon will prevent the PSP from gaining a lead over the DS worldwide in the near future. To add to that, this is if the PSP hasn't already passed the DS, and it sure as hell won't happen this year.

I can just imagine it now, when Pokemon Diamond and Pearl come out in Japan sometime in middle 2006 (just punched in general numbers; not an official prediction):

1. Pokemon Diamond: 521,875
2. Pokemon Pearl: 485,414
3. Brain Training 2: 45,597 / 594,215 :P

Nintendo DS: 141,854 / 1,320,541 / 6,154,845
PSP: 35,581 / 687,872 / 3,254,475
Xbox360: 3,514 / 215,518

Yeeowtch.

That said Matlock, get one before you enter the next section of your life. Whatever that may be. :lol

Okay, but I'm saying that there's two extremes being discussed by two groups of people, and what really happened was that both groups were reacting to each others' fanboyism and zealousy using articles and news to back up their claims even before both systems launched.

Yeah.

I also remember the Sony fans saying that once the PSP launches Nintendo is doomed, and that the DS stands for Dead System.

I also remember when the PSP overtook the DS in sales for the first time in Japan, that the DS would never outsell the PSP on a weekly basis ever again.

I also remember that when Winning Eleven PSP was going to release, that it would outsell the DS quite handily.

Now, the "future" lineup for the PSP is what will make it shine.

I've said it all along. Both systems will do fine because they both do different things. They can both coexist. And that is exactly what is happening. Ultimately, both systems will have enough different games that they'll both be worth the investment.

Don't forget FF: AC, which admittedly, I thought would end the war in Japan.

if it ever gets released here of course.

I think it looks close enough for me be careful about it not to be let down by it aas if it was a remake. In a similar way, is what I'm trying to say. Sort of like I explained with ridge racers below.
This isn't like Ridge Racers, though. It is a brand new game that does not share any actual design elements outside of some visual aspects.

I hope you seriously meant Crisis Core and not a movie like Advent Children. Kinda like saying a Pokemon movie for the DS would end the war, it wouldn't, but Diamond and Pearl certainly would.

No, I didn't actually, what with FF being so popular and from what it appeared that UMD's sold like hotcakes (at least over here).

But...as long as you mentioned it, when does CC come out?

i like my psp more than my ds. MUCH more. but i like the ds games much more than the psp games. its personal preference.

Here's how it stands right now--

The case against the PSP:

1. Console-style games on a handheld? I already have a console.
2. Playing music, video, roms on it? I already have a laptop, and a standalone mp3 player.
3. I don't take public transit (it doesn't exist around here).
4. I don't like GTA.
5. I already have a portable system.

The case for:

1. Some good looking racers.

So I ask, why should I get a PSP?

Simple.

Are there any games at all that you want for the PSP? If so, then buy one. If there are no games that interest you, then by all means, do not buy it. Simple logic that I use when lookign to get new systems/handhelds.

Even though I can see why someone might not enjoy the game, this still hurts :(

The problem is that I didn't have any fun with it. Collecting evidence was even more of a bore.

but it has secured itself a place in the handheld market, and deserves props for succeeding where so many others failed.

The Game Gear sold 10 million units. PSP has a ways to go. Anyway, the PSP is here to stay, whether Nintendo fans want to admit it or not. I don't think it will overtake DS nor will it get obliterated by it. I'd say a 60/40 split of DS and PSP respectively might end up being the case. Europe and America will account for most of the sales.

Seriously, Matlock.

The real reason to have the PSP (and the DS and whatver else for that matter) is because you're a gamer.

The case against:
1, 2, 3, 4 are not reasons not to get a PSP. They are frequently-quoted reasons cited to get a PSP that don't apply.

Anyway, plenty of original, exclusive games on PSP for this point in its life.

*Real* reasons not to get a PSP:
Not enough games of choice for a particular person yet
cost

Why you shoud get a PSP? I have no idea. Why somebody else should? The games, plus a few multimedia perks which are very, very spiffy.

"The games" includes a librabry of original games, good console ports often with internet or at least local wi-fi multiplay, quite a few drab console ports, and emulated games from older systems.

See other posts in this thread for examples of all of the above.

PSP is better. DS. is better.

Nintendo's handheld market software:
Hrmmm... Most of us that have social skills and/or free space large enough to raise an animal will never pick up Nintendogs. Personally, I'm 26 years of age, and I don't care a lick about anything related to Pokemon or tamagatchi-pet related. The only way I'd ever play something like Nintendogs is if there were a new series in which one could raise a preying mantis or a scorpion. Teh kiddy games are not something that most of us mature gamers are really going to care about in our personal gaming experiences. The indirect importance of these two items, to the world of DS owners and fans of Nintendo, translates to meat-and-potatoe sales for Nintendo. I do not, nor shall I ever care to play any of Nintendo's very kiddy titles, but the existence of kiddy titles does not negate the awesomeness of other DS software.

Personal DS Experience:
whblu.gif

I've put in 13 hours of complete fun exploring the castle in the new DS Castelvania.

Import Electroplankton kept many of my friends entertained in its trippy way; other friends of mine didn't care much for it.

My girlfriend and I can't get enough of Metroid Pinball, and I'm sending fan-mail asking for more.

If I could afford a copy of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney I would gladly pay the circa $70.oo American that it would take to get it to my door.
DS0080_mbox.jpg

I believe the same thing for Ouendan & Doramon imports.

I also can't wait for wireless Tetris. MarioKart is already here, and I'll probably buy it when it gets to $20.oo.

whblu.gif

...........I am sure that both the PSP and the DS each offer unique gaming experiences. However, there is one system that I prefer from the outset.......one that already has a huge library of GBA games. The only appeal the PSP has to me is maybe the ability to do the many things my laptop does. The winner there = my notebook computer.

You can't play it [Nintendo DS] in public.

I'll always have something to play on the DS, and I'm secure enough with myself and my self image to know that I don't have any qualms about playing the DS in public. I just want to keep aware of my surroundings so that I don't get robbed/mugged.

Those who can't enjoy themselves in public because they are concerned about their image should to act and feel like that have a pair. Indeed.

yeah, you just make youself look like a dork.

I always watch an episode of Lost on my PSP when I get to work and another one when I go home. I a lot to catch up. After that, there's Monty Python and Tales of Eternia.
