Sony's PS4 not supporting DLNA means no RVU support and that means it can't be used as a STB with the FCC mandated cable TV gateway boxes. That makes the XB1, provided they support DLNA and RVU, the best choice for the Living room Entertainment center.

UPDATE: Have had some info shared with me from someone who indicates this isn't a permanent situation, at least the DLNA part. Nothing official yet, but sounds promising.
Edit; it's now 2/2016 and much has been published that
confirms Pachter's vision but for both the XB1 and PS4. No-one thought it would take this much time to implement. WebRTC is now 1.0 but still not recommend status. Vidipath delayed for HEVC (DLNA 4) and ATSC 2 apparently skipped in favor of ATSC 3. WebRTC and ATSC 3 are supposed to be recommend status in 2016.
The PDFs sent to the FCC June 2015 (below) show that Sony always had plans to use DLNA with the PS4 (Passage and DLNA were sponsored or created by Sony early 2000 and the PDF shows their endgame).
XB1:
XB1 supports Playready Embedded (Microsoft developed Playready). It and the PS4 are the first Embedded PCs able to support Playready Embedded (Porting kit 2.5 and above). Playready 2 and below are embedded in the APP not the hardware and are less secure. ALL 4K media requires embedded Playready as will 1080P soon. Playready was chosen (2011) as the common DRM to support in home media streaming (Vidipath). This can be seen in

Confirmed Support for DVR with 1080P which is only available for ATSC 2 and above (DLNA 4 has Playready ND for 1080P)
Confirmed HEVC profile 10 which is only needed for; UHD IPTV, Blu-ray and ATSC 3
confirmed HEVC encode and decode for Skype as well as game streaming
Confirmed Skype to use Industry standard WebRTC which makes it able to work/communicate with other platforms using other Chat clients if they also follow WebRTC.

In 2013 a Sony employee states that the PS4 hardware supports HDMI 2 which is only needed for 4K commercial media. Given that the XB1 Blu-ray drive can support UHD blu-ray, the PS4 drive should be able to support it too.
PS4 Intellectual Notice lists Playready and WMDRM for Vidipath's DTCP-IP. Playready 2.5 has WMDRM as a subset so the Playready mentioned has to be Playready porting kit 3 which supports 4K media.

AT&T announced in 2015 that they will support WebRTC allowing connections across their platforms (Cell, Internet, Landline).
A Downloadable security scheme will be mandated in 2018 for Cable TV.
ATSC 3 will be recommend status at the end of 2016
ATSC 3 supports mobile TV in Cell Phones and the FCC may mandate ATSC 3 support in Cell phones for Emergency alert features.
ATSC 3 (4K) UHD TVs use HEVC and Web browsers standards like C-ENC and DASH, the TV screen is a web page. UHD Blu-ray follows the C-ENC format and UHD Blu-ray Digtial bridge uses Web Browser standards like C-ENC and DASH with Playready ND to stream over the home network (Vidipath DLNA 4). If the platform can support UHD Blu-ray it can support the other UHD media delivery standards. UHD Blu-ray with digital bridge requires the most powerful hardware and any platform that can support it can support all the other 4K Media delivery schemes with a Gateway in the short term for Cable and long term for Antenna TV. It's speculated that a Media gateway will be a UHD Blu-ray with Hard disk and DVR functionality that also support UHD Blu-ray digital bridge connected to network or incorporating TV tuners that convert to IPTV streams which is the native ATSC 3 before modulation.

PS4 and PS3 use WebMAF for apps. It's my view the Chat app in the PS3 will be replaced with and the one coming for the PS4 will follow Web RTC standards. It's less likely but still my opinion that the PS3 XMB will have an embedded Webkit (in memory all the time) and the entire XMB rewritten to use it. This because I think Patcher is on to something.
