This is just a blog. The guy happens to work for MS. The opinions in his blog are his... similar to the Sony guy who wrote his opinions in his blog. They do not always reflect the opinions of the companies they work for.

And that's taken straight off of the blog's "about" page. If Kojima said something similar in his blog, GAF would take it as gospel. As it stands, the whole thing is being scrutinized at an unfair level with intentionally misleading tactics.

Well, point for point:

'Price': There'll be a sub-$500 Blu-ray player out in the US by the end of the year, in all likelihood.

'Industry support': There's no evidence to support their claim. Blu-ray currently enjoys significantly stronger support from Hollywood studios than HD-DVD. Sony and MGM won't go anywhere, and Fox is almost more bullish on Blu-ray and its success than Sony itself. My only question mark would be Disney..

'Beta-ray’s own difficulties': They were the same difficulties HD-DVD were facing, which prompted interim AACS licensing. PS3 delay != Blu-ray delay. Blu-ray is launching in May. 50GB movies will be out in the summer.

It's rather shoddy FUD, nothing more. The whole "beta-ray" references make it read like a bitter TeamXbox post or something.

Do you have a source for when DL-50 discs will be available to market widescale? Everything I've heard thus far is that they continue to have problems with it in terms of high volume manufacturability. Of course, the last time I read anything about it was ~2 or 3 weeks ago. That's like dog years for format war news. Updates come fast and furious. :)

Either way, it shouldn't effect the PS3 since it will be using SL-25 discs for games- at least to begin with.

50 gb movies in May? would an HD movie really take up that much space, or anywhere near it? i don't see the need for these new formats

It shouldn't take up 50GB's, but from what I've read, 25GB discs will be pushing it with MPEG2 encoding. If a BR movie is encoded with some MPEG4 variant, 25GB should be plenty of space for the movie and lossless audio. IIRC, how a movie is encoded is left up to the studio; or in some cases, the distributors.

I refuse to take the author seriously if he can't get beyond his explicit bias against Blu-Ray.
I stopped using M$ when I got a driver's license.

Oh, I quit Microsoft... but I can't quit their mouse.

So good, Mr. Intellimouse Optical.
