Why would you sell your gamecube (or any system)?

I will trade in games I know that I'll realistically never want to play again, but I still keep a lot of them because they do have lasting/replay value to me.

I never trade or sell systems. I'd rather keep it in a box somewhere and pick up half a dozen great games on it for $20 to keep me occupied over a Christmas break ten years later.

It is partially true, though. To buy a game at $50 only to sell it for $20 at most... I never understood trading in 5 games to get one "free" and I don't think I want to.

What's the value of a game sitting on your shelf that you will never play?

I don't fully unserstand the 5-for-1 deals either, since that's particularly lean on the return, but I certainly understand trading them in when the deals are better. Or selling them on eBay.

Exactly. I've got new games to play - not that old shit from years ago. The only "old" game I play is Tetrisphere.

The thread also begs the question, why does Borghe care anyway?

I don't keep shit I don't play. I think I sold my gamecube to pay for a few months of WoW. Money well spent.

There are exactly two possible reasons I'd ever sell a system:

1) The company's next-generation system is coming, has games I want, and is backwards-compatible.
e.g. I'll sell my Gamecube after the Revolution hits, or if I had had to spend my own money as opposed to being a kid at these various times, I would have sold my GB for the GB Pocket, my GB Pocket for the GBC, and my GBC for the GBA. (I do still have my GBA even though I've got an SP, but that's only because anything with frontlighting or backlighting seems to be completely unplayable in sunlight, whereas the original GBA is playable in sunlight--albeit more or less only in sunlight.)

2) I can get back as much money or, somehow, more money by selling it.
e.g. If I won an X-Box in a contest, I'd probably sell the thing immediately, because other than DOA, DDR, and possibly KOTOR, I couldn't care less about the system. But if I'd actually spent money to buy an X-Box, I probably wouldn't sell it even if I bought only five games for it ever; I'd either settle for the slim pickings I already like or, because I'd already blown my money, maybe I'd try to actually like the racing, sports, and FPS genres that I really couldn't care less for right now.

That's pretty much it. I tend to agree that I don't see how anyone can get rid of a system unless they've stopped liking gaming... The only thing I could support, I guess, is if a person didn't research the system's future release list before buying it and didn't realize they were throwing away money on a system that's absolutely and utterly devoid of any games or genres they care about. In that case, I'd say sure, get back as much money as you can and cut your losses.

Primarily for cash. If I see no games on the horizon I want I immediately sell it usually. I have a reputation among my friends for selling any rebuying systems.

I have owned 2 Cubes, and both are now gone. 2 PS2s and now they are gone. After I get rid of them some exclusive comes out that I want, which necessitates in my mind repurchasing it. For the PS2 it was MGS3, for Cube it was something I can not remember. I almost bought a 3rd for RE4, which is of course ridiculous. I borrowed my friend's Cube and played it. The X Box is the only system in the last 2 generations that I kept from launch to now (I traded it in for credit already though). My PSP is going soon.

I'm just about ready to eBay my Dreamcast, games, and accessories because:

1. the best games have been rereleased on the other consoles or have gotten superior sequels on them

2. most of the other games haven't aged well

3. Dreamcast controllers--both Sega's and the Ascii Pad FT (for fighting games)--suck...

4. ...and PlayStation/PS2 controller adaptors don't work with my Hori and Logitech wireless controllers.

But my 'Cube will stay. It still gets played.

I'll sell of a system to free up space. It's getting hard for me to do so since I have no need to sell system/games for money. But I've got a ton of games that I no longer play

Also, collecting is a genetic defect. If you have a desk covered in blister-packed action figures, you're just one paycheck away from being one of those homeless guys with three shopping carts full of crap

Hey.. I resemble that remark! :lol

Oh wait.. they're all in my closet.. but I'm far from being homeless. :lol

A) i'm not a collector, except on really bad days -- and i don't tend to keep hardware with weak libraries. if the ds builds up a list of titles i feel are must have over the coming years, then i'll probably purchase or trade for one, or borrow it from one of my ds-owning peeps. i'm into gaming to PLAY games, not amass some sort of historical record of my tastes.

B) when i honestly feel i won't play something again, i trade it in. periodically i get the ol' nostalgia bug, but in those cases i usually borrow the game from a friend with collector tendencies. same goes for hardware. i don't have this ineffable NEED to keep some sort of record or feel a sense of "completion" like some of you do -- the shit with the most dust on it gets a new home on the Gamecrazy USED rack.

If it weren't for Zelda coming out next year, my GC would be out the door tomorrow. All I would have to do to make up for my GC being gone is rebuy RE4 for PS2. Problem solved. :D

My DS is also collecting a bit more dust than I'd like but since my girlfriend bought it for me it might be best to hold onto it for a little while longer. I'd also like to try out FF3 DS.

I can see the woman getting PO'ed cause you traded her gift in for sure.

I kinda sorta with Zelda wasn't even coming out, that way - I would be ditching my GC even sooner and get the money to go towards maybe a 360.
