Wii? Non! - Nintendo Land |OT|

Wait, you can play archery with a nunchuck/Wiimote?

No, you can only play as a swordsman with just the Wiimote. I was referring to the fact that Zelda Battle Quest seemed designed as a sword-based game first and then they added the archer. Metroid Blast (in my opinion) works better when you are on foot with Wiimote/Nunchuck too because the levels are designed for someone to be on-foot, not in a ship.

This is, of course, if you are only playing solo because the Archer/Ship work very well as a companion when doing multiplayer.

So I'm a bit confused with the stamps - DK Crash Course has a "Perfect Run" one - am I to assume this is over all four boards? I completed the first board without dying (including getting to the second board); did I have to collect everything as well, or is it that I have to do all of the boards?

Perfect run through all of the boards I think.

Speaking of controls, is it just me or are the motion really are incredibly accurate? There is almost no lag and really feels 1:1 most of the time, if not always. Yeah, drift is still a bitch but other than that I really noticed an improvement over the any Wii effort despite using the very same controller. Hell, even aiming in Metroid Blast feels almost as fluid as IR controls.

Yeah that caught me off guard the Gamepad didn't look like it could be a good controller for motion aiming.

One of the better examples is also the Plaza, controlling the camera never ( I repeat, NEVER) felt off no matter how fast you swing the controller. Having the representation on both screens also solidifies the statement. DK crash course is also another excellent examples.

Yeah, this game is far more impressive than I first gave it credit for.

Ummm... I'm totally stuck on the last part of area 9 on the 2nd course of DK Crash Course. Tells me to "be brave" and freefall while landing face up, but I crash every time. Is there a trick to this that I'm not getting?

Two points:

First, I think the U pad has more motion sensors inside than the wiimote with motion+, and a magnetic compass. So between Nintendo's experience with motion tracking software and a superior device, that could make the difference.

Second, even when using a standard motion+ wiimote, I do wonder if having more processing power available is allowing them run their software calibration routines at a higher FPS for polling data. Perhaps that means it gets "lost" less often, among other things. Maybe this is why motion+ activities in Nintendoland seem to feel more responsive, reliable, and evidently require less calibration breaks than anything on the Wii.

Maybe it's all placebo but the motion interaction in Nintendoland does seem more solid than even the best Wii games.

I just go very slow over the edge and I never crash.

These are also the points I thought of but I don't any evidence to back it up. I would love it if someone breaks this down and give us real facts.

My mind is still wondering, though. If extra oomph in power allows better motion controls. Why wasn't that shown in the Playstation with Move. I realize that it uses different technolgy but for the most part I got the sense that aiming with Move was as good (or bad) as WM+ aiming. How come it didn't improve upon that?

I haven't put much time into DK's Crash Course up until now, but I just managed to finish the first board. It got to a point where I was nailing the first 8 sections pretty easily. The first time I did section 9 I passed it perfectly, but after screwing up on section 10 and having to restart, I couldn't quite nail section 9 again until a couple of restarts later. Weird. Definitely requires holding the Gamepad at the perfect angle.

DKCC is certainly one of those tough but addictive arcade-type experiences. I just didn't want to give up because I knew that with each play I was getting closer and closer to victory. Gotta keep that momentum, y'know? A satisfying challenge.

It could be lack of experience and software engineering. People often do not give Nintendo any credit for the backend R&D they put into certain projects. The basics of the wiimote system seem to have been tested extremely well before the system was even launched.

Another problem with Move though, is in the basic execution. The Move wand has more sensors than a wiimote and a magnetic compass. That is good. It tries to reuse the PSEye camera to calibrate itself with regards to the television, this is bad: because it's not stereo. The wiimote system uses a braindead simple triangulation system: two LED lights on the sensor bar, that allow the sensor in the wiimote to see stereo dots. And calculation its distance and position relative to the television without guesswork.

Move always loses calibration very slowly and begins to drift, because it seems, the single point of reference the PSEye is looking at cannot be used to simulate depth perception. (The single globe on top of the Move wand.)

I think this is why IR pointing doesn't work so well in FPS games with Move because you can't rely on the cursor always being in the same spot when you point the wand at the TV, relative to wherever you're sitting. It's always a little bit off in some direction. It also appears the Move wand drifts further as a tumbling device, compared to a wiimote with motion+.

This game, man, this game.

Finished the first 9 stages of Pikmin last night, so awesome. All it did though, was make the wait for Pikmin 3 harder. So much fun though playing in co-op.

Even the games I find the least fun (Yoshi & Octopus) are good in short bursts.
With the Yoshi game, though, I know all the Mii costumes were designed to resemble the series, but in that one you put on blue overalls and I couldn't remember a game with a character like that - am I misremembering??

nope this is what I thought at first but it's just collecting all the bananas on the 4 courses. You can die as much as you want. I wish there was a stamp for the perfect run so that I could show off though :p

The trick is to hold the gamepad to the slope's angle in section 9.

More boards, replays you can share, universal leaderboards and maybe a map editor and they've got themselves a killer title! if only ...

So nobody interested in a GAF Nintendo Land leaderboards? :( (I swear last time I'll ask)

Didn't really spend too much time with this game or NSMB U until today, when I had 3 friends over and we decided to play both for some multiplayer.

Super Mario U was a blast co-op, but we didnt' get past Morton Koopa without the GamePad dictator going on a choked-up gigglefest.

Now, Nintendoland was a huge surprise, and I was amazed how much fun it was.

My favorite was the Animal Crossing game, where verbal communication is key.

Mario Tag and Chase was ok, but we also had a lot of fun with the Zelda adventure and the Pikmin game.

Amazed at the quality of this game, some of the minigames have a lot of courses. Unfortunately didn't delve into Metroid too much because of the lack of nunchuks. Oh, and the music is a blast

Yes the Zelda minigame really shows this off. Sword controls are perfect 1:1. No lag whatsoever. I have a feeling Nintendo really emphasized both low input lag and rapid sensor polling with the Wii U.

I love the sword play in Zelda. Not only is the game simply stunning, but between it and Pikmin I feel like I could get almost a full games worth of time and enjoyment out of both of them.

It's nothing to do with all four boards, as I got the "perfect run" stamp before I had even completed the four courses. It may well be the first two, or even just one. Pretty sure it's about getting all bananas whilst not losing any lives.

There are a few of those drops throughout the levels, all slightly different. Just fall off them at a certain slow speed. You want to clip your wheel on the platform below, so you do a full 360 spin. Tilting may help to achieve this, at least on the later 3/1 drop.

I am. Though not necessarily in DKCC - I'm a total mediocre there ; )

Are the actual Pikmin games at all like Pikmin Adventure (with the leveling up and such)? It feels like a mindless hack 'n slash.

Also, Zelda with 2 players is really fun, but really damn hard. I've been stuck on the
Ganon Tower Approch
level for days. Maybe it's because I'm playing with my relatively non-gamer wife.

not at all, the original pikmin can get hectic but only when you let lost in the game and need to regain control once again. The best term I can think of Pikmin is real-time-action-adventure-strategy. It's a very unique franchise and nothing even close to hack and slash or anything related to the woe "mindless".

EDIT: and BTW I am Very interested in leader boards.

I've never played a Pikmin title before. I've been thinking about giving one a go, but I thought Pikmin was an RTS...and I'm not a fan of the genre.

Pikmin 2 has dungeons that are very similar in level design. Other than that, Nintendoland completely lacks the additional element of exploring and collecting. It's also much slower paced and usually has more open areas, with more complex puzzles and strategic approaches (since Pikmin obviously don't just regenerate like that). The boss fights are pretty much the real deal imo.

I should have finish the 2nd DKCC stage soon, can't wait to discover the next one.

As for the Pikminimin game I'm having an hard time trying to complete one of the time attack levels near the end of the game. I think I already tried 15 / 20 times and I'm still missing something like 10 sec. I'm playing it alone atm, but will give it a try in coop' with my kid this week-end, perhaps it will help.

Other than that I still need to find time to play more NL Zelda (stage 7 I think) & Metroid (same). I'm not even talking about the other attractions which I just played here and there without really going into them. Yet. There is so much content in this game...

I love this game. It is so much more robust than reviews have given it credit for. It is so great to sit down for an hour at a time and just play whatever I'm in the mood for.

DKCC: I'm most of the way through the second board and I love how natural the learning curve is. I love that it forces you to replay the boards in order to make continued progress. Without fail, I will improve on my past performances every time I play. I still haven't stumbled into any shortcuts but my times still continue to improve incrementally in each play-through. This is just a perfect gem of a game.

BTB: I finally beat the first set of levels (earning my star) the last time I played it. I'm looking forward to seeing how the game will expand on further play throughs. This reminds me a lot of Yoshi Touch & Go which I had loved back in the day. Yoshi Touch & Go would be perfect for Nintendoland 2. The player could even hold the gamepad vertically in the descent stage.

CFTR: Have continued to play this quite a bit though I haven't really gotten into it. Furthest I've gotten is the 8th segment.

PA: I haven't encountered any advanced gameplay yet but it has still been a fun and charming experience.

MB: I love this! I have only been playing single player with the game pad and, based on reviews and impressions, I didn't think this would feel as fleshed out as it does as a single player experience. This is probably my single favorite game in the collection. The ship controls are so much fun and I love the deformed Metroid visuals.

Another travesty of gaming journalism. They probably played it for an hour and dubbed it "the new Wii Sports." It is completely different type of game.

This is the only game in years to give me the same feeling as old NES games. Incredibly hard to beat the game, but the earlier levels are easier and playing through them again and doing better give you bonuses (coins, hearts, ninja scrolls, etc.) that help you with the harder levels later on.

I finally beat the Ninja game this morning. Felt like a boss!.

How do I access the other boards in DK? I completed the 1st one and saw the message that there are other boards to try.

Other than that, we played a lot of the Animal Crossing game yesterday. I was the dogs and my wife and parents were the other animals.

Since I'm skilled and (almost) always win, I decided to play with some challenges of my own.

Some examples
1- Only play with one dog (mister fork or mister knife)
2- Play with two dogs but always together (so no spreading to move the camera up)
3- Catch one player only once so they don't feel always the only one I catch. However, I'm not responsible if they bump into me.

I do the same for the Mario Chase game. Sometime the players will be far away from me so I start chasing them.

This game brought a lot of fun in my house.

When you beat it a second time the course will transform and open up a path to the next board. The other boards aren't unlocked separately, they always need to be played in sequence.

Today I tapped some people in my plaza after "inviting people from Miiverse" and got these POPUPS saying like "whoa this person is a [status]!" Stamp collector, trophy something, prize blah. And I got a coin for each popup. Then I tapped someone else and got a "this person is new!" popup, with another coin prize. Then I tapped someone ELSE and got a "this person is from another country!!!!" popup, and ANOTHER COIN.

This has never happened to me before. Is this some sort of stealth new functionality or something? The game's still 1.1.0. Have other people been getting this?

They've always been there. They appear on the left hand side of your TV. If you can track them down, you get a coin.

I suck at all the games but have still managed to at least get stars on them.

Well I don't suck at balloon breeze I guess. I can keep the perfect bonus up to day 7 without dying. I just can't do packages well.

I'm at 1900 coins collected and 150 prizes. But I am running out of ways to get coins. I think I got 15 from playing all of the metroid levels, ouch. Why do I never get 2x bonuses anymore?

Since this thread hasn't got too much activity recently, I thought I'd post my best scores (they're not great) for each game here. If anybody wants to do the same, I'll add them and maybe we can get some GAF leaderboards going. If you guys think this will clog up the thread and hurt discussion about the game, I'll try and make another thread. Main reason for posting this here is because of lack of activity + mild interest in rankings.

Anyway, here are my scores so far for the Single Player games:

Balloon Trip Breeze

Best Score: 1325 pts

Captain Falcon's Twister Race

Best Score: 6326 pts

Takamaru's Ninja Castle

Best Score: 4400 pts

DK Crash Course

Best Score: 16138 pts

Red course #1 speedrun: 46,6 seconds

Octopus Dance

Best Score: 1194 pts

Yoshi's Fruit Cart

Best Score: 1245 pts

Like I said, feel free to send me your scores and I'll gladly update my post to resemble some kind of leaderboard. I also need some motivation to improve some of these!

I bought this game to enjoy with my gfs sons during Christmas time. It was hard to skip Mario for this title. Ill read the thread but let me ask this first.
We Will probably be three most of time maybe four. Is the game good with only three players what are the best games in that case. What about four?
Thanks.

Hmmm. Well, anything is great with four, no problem. With three, the co-op games (Metroid, Pikmin, and Zelda) will work perfectly, but the competitive (Mario, Animal Crossing, Luigi) are a bit more hit-or-miss. I think Animal Crossing will be good; Mario and Luigi probably less so.

I spent some time playing Nintendoland with my non-gaming parents - Animal Crossing and Luigi both worked fine in this setting, although mostly because the learning curve resulted in some entertaining failures.

So it can work. But maybe not as a sustained, long term play experience. Zelda co-op would probably be the best bet in my eyes: "Gamer" takes the archery, others handle the sword swinging.

I believe it's suppose to be a joke on the fact that there is a lot of confusion on Wii U.

"Wii?" indicates a question of whether or not Nintendo Land can be played on Wii. It also sounds like "oui" in French. The answer to the question posed is "non," which, as I'm sure you know, means "no" in French.
