Will cheap gas hurt your car?

I've usually used Chevron gas, but I'm curious if the ultimate cheap-o gas is really any worse. I've heard various things from different people, but haven't really found that much information to support either side.

I don't know, I have a 4 cylinder so it's only the cheapest for me. $1.25 a litre hurts my wallet, if anything else.

not in the short term, but brand name gas have additives and detergents in their products that reduce carbon deposits. I'm a Chevron guy myself.

Depends on what you drive. I can't put cheap gas into my Maxima or my FX35. This will instantly create engine knock/pinging and severely decreased performance issues.

What do you drive?

What are the best fuels?

I use BP and Shell mostly. Why? Because that's what my parents have always used...kind of a dumb reason.

'89 Accord. The manual says to use regular, but I'm still hesitant to use bargain-basement gas.

I'm curious Alpha... whose FX35 is this? Yours... or your dads? Last I heard you were signing a lease with your father?

In some parts of the country, the gas really is all the same.

In any case, there's no such thing as 'cheap gas' anymore :)

Yes. I moved to Oregon from Iowa, and the gas here is not nearly as regulated. My car has lost about 8 MPG, does not run as well and is more noisy. We took it in about six months ago and were told that it's normal to have to have the entire fuel system cleaned out more frequently in this state because of the lousy standards.

So, yes.

Yes

It depends on your car, the station and your state regulations.

Your Car: Sometimes your car requires a higher octane. if it says use regular, then there's no harm in using regular, but...

Station: If it's a cheap gas station, not just a cheap brand, you might want to be careful. A lot of these places can charge less because they have cheap fuel or they charge less simply because of faults. Some stations are old/crappy and have water in their tanks. That's why you should never fill up when you see a gas truck leaving a station. When he puts all that gasoline in there it stirs up the water and you have a higher chance of getting water in your system. And if you see a gas truck that hasn't put it in, same deal for the same reason. But sometimes, gas stations will just get good deals on a shipment of gas etc. So look for these patterns in stations in your neighborhood and such.

State Regulations: State regulations vary. Like when I lived in NM, getting regular for my car was not an option because the state had no regulations on cleansers and such in the gas and if a company didn't opt for that on their own, you could get some really nasty gas. so i always got the mid ranger gas just to be sure. But it varies so check out your state. mostly ones with exhaust regulations will have better gasoline regulations.

something I don't think a lot of people are grasping here. Each type of gas has a certain octane level. There is no real "cheap" gas places. I realize that those places that look really seedy on the side of the road look like they might "water down" their gas, but I can guarantee you that is in fact illegal.

So I say Hell, if you find a place that won't rape you for gas prices use them. Even if it's not Hess/Shell/BP/Citgo or whatever, but never use a different octane. That will fuck u royally.

some cars require higher octane. Some prefer it but will automatically compensate for increased knock with lower octane by retarding the engine (you'll lose some power)

yeah, watering down the gas is illegal. but a lot of those seedy places have messed up facilities and storage tanks and that's the real problem. but some companies get gas cheaper than other companies in a given area. that's why i said look for patterns with stations.

If you're driving an '89 cheap gas won't really matter. If it was something more sportier, like a newer import with a sporty engine I wouldn't skip on paying the extra couple of cents for High Octane.

I personally drive a sports car with a 15 gallon tank and it costs me about 80-90$CAD for a full tank of gas :( I have to fill up every 6-7 days, about 40% of my paycheque goes towards gas.

Don't even bother filling up with premium.

My dad's. I refer to it mine as well, because I know my dad will drive my Maxima whenever he needs to and I'll drive his FX35 whenever that happens. :p

My '89 Corolla needs premium or else i get spark knock. It's not a problem in the colder months. i really need to look into the cost of a timing belt adjustment, or just look into doing it myself.

Is everyone here illiterate or something?

He's not asking about regular vs premium but no-name brand (hole in the wall gas station) vs name-brand (ie Chevron/Texaco/Exxon/Shell/Mobil etc).

Can you compromise with 89-octane?

As far as cheap gas goes, Arco is pretty good. They're mostly cheap because they don't take credit-cards, not because they cut corners in facilities.

Sometimes. My tank's full of premium at the moment, but i'll continue to top it off with midgrade (89) unless it starts back knocking again. If it seems to work fine on that, i'll drop down to regular. It won't be cold enough to use regular until the beginning of next year, unfortunately.

I'm not so trusting of hole in the wall gas stations. There was one here, who always undercut the other stations in town, who, as it turned out later, was putting water in their gas. Ever since, I stick to my stations. I mostly fill up at BP, but I'll put in Tesoro or Citgo gas if I'm nearer to one of those. When I'm in Canada, I only go to Petrocanada. I think I've got enough points for free chips now :p

Cheap gas can cause knock and pinging in you're engine. I have to use premium :(
