Will MS ever make a profit in consoles?

I know Americans like to perceive the XBox brand as strong but the reality is it is no stronger than the likes of N-Gage here in Europe and virtually non-existant in Japan.

Wow so the XBOX brand is no stronger than N-Gage? puebla was right... :o(

You don't seem to be understanding - Nintendo is a strong brand in the handheld sector, Sony/Playstation in consoles and Apple/iPod in MP3 players.

They all dominate their respective sectors.

Please state which market the XBox brand dominates with such considerable margins.

As well as dominating their primary markets, strong brands transcend international borders and cultures - they don't just exist in arbitrary microcosms to suit their proponents.

It's amusing to see how you redefine the term "strong brand" again and again to support your flawed argument. So, allow me to understand the latest definition - a strong brand now is the "brand that dominates with considerable margins in a specific market"? Uh, ok. Using your logic, i guess you could say that Honda (the car maker) is not a strong brand in the U.S. auto market since its market share in '05 was only 8.6%, where as General Motors must be the one and only strong brand since its market share was 26%. That's strange, because Honda is a pretty darn recognized company.

Unless one can provide actual consumer research data supporting brand strength or lack of it is worthless to argue about it. Just like it would be silly to argue about a particular game's sales without any actual retail data.

OK if it moves us on from the brand discussion I'll concede that XBox is a strong brand because the MS brand dominates the consumer and server OS market.

As to the question put forth in the topic title - no, unless MS stops trying to treat CE consumers like PC consumers they will never make a profit in consoles.

Your schtick is tiring, come back when you can stay out of Xbox threads or have something positive to contribute.

In fact, I thought I had heard Microsoft made promises to their investors that there wouldn't be a successor to the Xbox if the first console exceeded a certain number in losses for x number of years. The sad fact is they lost more than that limit, and still brought out the 360.

Stock-holders and investors am cry.
