Will multi-disc X360 games be common?

Publishers and developers care.

Every multi-disc title on the 360 will result in Number of Extra Discs * Cost To Include Discs * Number Of Copies Sold dollars taken straight out of profit.
PS3 will have the same problem unless they use blu-ray discs which willnot cost $.05 to make! if fact I bet a 50g BR disc will cost 10 times what a dvd costs...

Yes. They might have had a more polished presentation instead of a rushed, buggy one as well.

Then the question boils down to, will the fact that the 360 has to have games on multiple disks actually hurt it in sales, thus nullifying any advantage that MS will have received from launching first this gen. I'd say no.

Do I wish the 360 had an HD-DVD drive? Sure. But is it something that's going to prevent me from buying one? Who knows how long before HD-DVD drives are going to be available, and at what cost. We've seen HD-DVD and BluRay both delayed recently, and although both camps keep setting target dates, it could be some time before the drives are available.

Microsofts presentation was not impacted by their rush to market. They could have all the time in the world, and it would still come off as rushed and buggy. They just don't seem to ever have their presentation skills down, and that applies to other products, not just the Xbox.

all the iso's are 7.02gb after de-compression. It's the same as it was for the first Xbox isos. Everything that's on the game data sector offset is dumped, so you can have a perfect image without using the Xbox.

Which next-generation drive would that be? HD-DVD? BluRay? Neither of which are actually available yet. Should MS have delayed the launch of the 360 to wait until those drives were available?

Absolutely. MS should have launched next year.

I don't mind multi disc games at all - in fact I like it - as long as I don't have to swap it every 5 min to access certain place like old dos/appleII games. Especially when the game is just so good like RE4 on cube, I actually anticipated disc-changing moment to see where I am. Also when I get a multi-disc games, I feel like I'm getting something more than I paid for. Yeah, kinda like a deluxe set. Perhaps I'm the only one feeling this way about multi-disc games, and I don't think it's a sign of inferior game in its content... or are we that lazy to get up once in a while to change the disc to proceed? ;)

Anyhow, as give circumstance - I think multi disc games will be common in the future for 360, depending on genre - RPGs, adventures might span 4 discs or so - just like it was like PSX and DC.

Eh, I dont think it's about laziness...but I still prefer single disc games more than multi-disc. Having to swtich discs in the middle of a game kind of breaks up the moment...there's some sort of disconnect whenever I have to switch games. I don't really like it when I know that I'm near the end of the game when I switch discs in Resident Evil. And it also usually means that you won't be able to backtrack to previous areas after you switch discs. It annoys me :|

Those "releases" include dummy files because hackers don't know if they are meaningful (ie some early GC "releases" were trimmed down a little too much).

You can't run these dumps yet, but you will be able to sooner
or later :)
In the mean time you can use our open source extractor tool to
check the Contents on your pc
Why do we release full raw dumps, one sentence "Remember
Gamecube?" until we know for sure what will be needed to run
these things we will be releasing the full raw dumps to you,
also a full raw dump is more likely to assist any hackers out
there...
So the first task is done. We hope this encourages all hackers,
coders and crackers out there to take up the challenge.
Enjoy!

Multidisc is fine in games like Shenmue 2 where theres actually distinct areas, its almost beneficial because it gives you a sense of how far through the game you've gone. It DOES get annoying in games where you have to go back and forth, normally you'd expect developers to design the games around the problem (like they have done on previous consoles) but with PS3 having all that extra storage space it might end up that how often 360 owners have to change discs becomes something of an afterthought for multiplatform developers.

Of course it might end up that multiplatform developers take the lowest common denominator and just ship the game on DVD for PS3 (which would suck).

I understand where you are coming from - I guess if it's a horrible game, than I might feel the same way. But my experience has been quite forgiving, and some of the games do allow you to back-track even in the 2nd disc, usually containing a whole new event or hidden stuff - so I guess what matters to me the most is that if it's designed with such things in mind - like Ghost said well above - I think it's fine. And for me, the changing disc do not really break up the moment - as again, a well designed game should wrap up whatever lose end, then proceed to another disc, like a chapter in a book. In most cases, I actually love the moment - because of the "anticipation"... just like a turning a page in a book.

But realistically. We are looking at 7+ gigabites of storage here for one DVD. Unless one battle takes entire 7 gigabites - and I think 7 gigs are plenty big enough to hold this generation's most games' overworld in general - and what might separate each disc probably has to do FMV in HD resolution, and audio/voices - and smart distribution and design of the game should and will allevate the pain of disc-changing. Heck, I'd at least like to believe so that the game design has progressed that much by now. :)

think MS is fine. i mean whats gonna happen if BR or HD DVD dont catch on? BR will be looked at as a flop and that could actually have a negative impact on the PS3 in the minds of consumers.

Yea, but Sony can continue to put games on BRs even if the studios/consumers don't really care about their use for movies.

how much does Oblivion take up?

The forests and some of the land mass in Oblivion are fully procedural, so they don't take any space at all. Most of the stuff that hog the disk in that game comes from the audio...50hours of voice alone.

Of course devs can compress their games enough to fit on a DVD, or find other ways around the size limit. I don't think the reason for them not doing so is neccessarily laziness though (I don't see game developers in general as "lazy", but maybe that's just me)...it's more like they would rather spend time on other aspects of the game, or perhaps it's not within their budget to hire people who sit around and compress a game for weeks.
