will there be a 360 Dashboard patch ever?

So i've been using the 360 since picking it up on Launch day.
up until yesterday i had been using it in a verticle position.

for the most part the thing work flawless.

the last couple days though i have had increasing issues with the dashboard locking up leaving me to turn off the system by use of the power button on the face plate. This now happens almost every time i am playing where at 1st only maybe once a session.

At 1st i thought it was rushed software leaving small bugs but i have pretty much concluded it is something to do with the dashboard itself since it only locks when i switch into the dashboard.

It almost always happens 2 out of 3 times when i create a room in say PGR3 and go to send friends invites. the sending screen will lock half way and just freeze. therefore killing the room i created and kicking anyone else in it out as well and leaving me to restart the system.

it seems to freeze ocassionally when trying to listen or send regular messages as well (not as often though)

i know a few other people have had some kind of freeze issues and wonder if they are simlar to this or completely different? Also have you heard of a fix if so that is coming out? i would think that something like this could be fixed with a patch but i guess i could be wrong, just hoping as i really do not wanna have to send it in if i do not have to.


on another note, a friend of mine just got his a couple days ago at sams and had the issue with the scratched disk problem. so i took a carefull look at my PGR3 disk since i have been playing it more then other games and did see some tiny scratches all over it which made no sense considering it has touched NOTHING on the surface. How widespread is this issue if at all?

these are not deep enough to effect anything like the one my friend got on his PD game but over time i could see these clouding the bottom side of the disk if it was to continue.


Has anyone writen MS here about these two issues and recieved any feedback if so?

also what was the email you send this info to so that they would be aware of the issue at hand?

I've had it lockup 2 or 3 times when exiting a game to the dashboard since launch. Not for sure, but it seemed like everytime it happened to me I was exiting out of a multiplayer game in progress when it happened. Who knows though. Hopefully they patch it soon.
 
I'd contact MS Support, I've never had mine lock up

There are a few areas I'd like to see improvement in the dash though, so I hope they do update it and im sure they will

I hope they updated marketplace soon. They need to let you actually see the gamerpictures and themes you're buying. Better organization would also be nice. I'm sick of having to go through shitloads of game trailers just to find the demos etc.
 
Allright, i am gunna actually read the book that came with the 360 and find some contact info and see if i can get some auto or official stand on the dashboard situation hopefully.

am i correct to think that it could be fixed with a downloadable patch?
 
I would say so yeah, if it happens at a specific point every time and they can recreate it then I'm sure they'll at least look into it.

Depends if your problem is hardware-related or software-related.

If you're freezing due to your Xbox overheating (or otherwise malfunctioning), there's nothing a patch will do.

If the problem is with the Dashboard code, then yeah a patch could fix it. I've never had the Dashboard freeze on me, ever, so I'm thinking your problem might be hardware-related.

It's definitely not overheating. I've played ridiculous amounts of PDZ and never had a problem. And it only happens when you exit a game to the dashboard. The ring of light also stays green when it locks up instead of going red. I would think it has something to do with some bad code in the dashboard. Plus I've only had it happen a few times since launch. If it was bad hardware you would think the problem would be more pronounced.
 
Anyone else notice a severe lag when navigating the Dashboard with the d-pad? I've experienced it on two 360s. Can't believe they released it like that.
 
Weird. Seems like it might be system specific. I play a lot of PDZ and PGR3 and I never had a system freeze. Weirdest problem I ever had with mine is that, if I play Halo 2 and then put in a ACTUAL 360 game, it says I should put the game into a 360. To see this message just put a 360 game into a XBOX or a DVD player and it should play for you. But I heaven't seen that since the first 3 days. Running fine since then. Even after player Halo 2.
 
I've never had mine freeze, but I haven't played PGR3 either. It seems like the problem would be patchable. I also think we'll see periodic improvements. Bill said they built this thing to be "future proof" and I believe that he meant software/firmware upgradeable.
 
I think having PGR3 freeze sometimes when you do certain things in the lobby screen is a known issue. It's happened to me before, and other people have mentioned it.

In ther system info tab, the version number of the dashboard is listed, and I bet a zillion dollars that version number will change.

Mine currently reads 2.0.2241.0

If you've been on Xbox Live, you've already gotten the first dashboard update...:)
 
It's also happened to me in PGR3. But I just pressed the Guide button to look for a friend and it froze up on me.

I could still talk to the people in my game but there was no hope of me ever playing...

yeah that is pretty much the same thing i am talking about.

i have had it happen in PDZ as well as a couple arcade games.

not as often but then again i play those less and that means i also do not send messages or check them as much which keeps me not in that scenerio as often.

if it's getting hot then it is not detectable to the naked touch.
 
One of my friends has had his 360 lock up frequently when it loses its network connection when signed into Xbox Live (he has a somewhat flaky wireless bridge)...

How solid is your network/internet connection?

yeah i was just about to post that... a couple weeks ago when i guess my ISP was having problems, there was a simple formula for lockups...

being in friends list + disconnect from live = lockup

good thing i had the trusty mini remote nearby to power off and on
 
good question.

as far as i know it's pretty solid.

i play normally late at night and my router is a linksys and have not noticed any issues off hand.

how would i go about looking deeper into that to see if maybe there is a connection?

Something else you could do is post this over at the xbox.com message boards, I think they might have a specific help/support forum or something over there. If enough people have a similar problem, it may be helpful.
 
Got mine at launch and it has never locked up. If you are one of the small percentage of people having that problem you need to contact MS and they will send a box for your defective 360 and replace it within the week.

damn, i hate to think i am having a problem. i just sorta overlooked it till last night playing some co-op PDZ with a friend and every time i sent him an invite to play i froze and he put the idea in my head that it should not do that at all (his has not done it yet)

so, xbox.com forums huh?

as good a starting point as any i guess.

This might sound stupid, but I had two lockups the second day I had the system. I then moved the brick up onto my entertainment center (behind the TV) and havent had a problem since. Keep the Xbox and the Brick off carpet.

Actually you can see the gamerpictures and themes you are buying. In the menu where you have to confirm or cancel buying the pictures/themes, there's a preview of what you are buying on the top right hand corner.
 
As of now its really difficult to tell when they add new stuff, that needs to be fixed.

Unless they changed something, the last time I checked, the only game where you could actually see a preview for any related content before you purchased was COD2. For the other games, there was just a logo in that little window.

Regardless, you can preview everything here.

Perhaps they fixed it, it takes a few seconds but there are previews, even for the kameo holiday outfits

Same here. PGR3 is thre only game that gives me a hassle id I try to go to the dash from the guide button. I think it's a small bug with the game and not the dash.

Hmm, that's good then. The way it was before, it was like they were trying to get people to spend their points through trial and error. I guess everything just wasn't finalized yet.
 
Is it really that bad to have it in the verticle position? I haven't had one single problem yet. My Kameo disc looks fine (no scratches or anything).
 
they should add a "news" tab and shows xbl marketplace/arcade updates. also maybe general xbox news, maybe even customizable world/sports and other news.

Exactly, the only way i've been able to tell there are new Xbox Live Arcade games is my remember what the game count was on "All Games" (currently 37). Or by looking at MN's blog

It tags some stuff new, but some of the stuff tagged is from launch, its certainly not new.
 
SO here is another strange thing happening to my system with one certain game.


So i rent condemded and when it goes into autosave as i walk into new areas the whole game temp. locks up as it saves then starts again when done saving.

it looks like it was intended to be seemless because every once in a blue moon when it does this i can actually move while it saves but 4 out of 5 attempts and i get that frozen in time for 3-5 seconds while it saves effect.

anyone here played that game and have that issue?

Yeah I get the same thing sometimes as well. I hate it when it does this since it feels like my console just locked up for a split second there. Not a problem really.
 
My dashboard locks up after long online sessions of PD0. When I eject the game, boom.... it freezes.
 
The only lockups ive had were related to streaming media from my computer. Once in madden and twice while I was streaming movies and got the network congestion message.

nah, maybe its just some games that do it?
 
Yeah, it's hard for any of us normal consumers to know for sure if it's a compatabilty issue with certain games flipping into the dashboard or just the dashboard itself.

(i'm leaning toward the dashboard)

hopefully someone at MS will get back with one of us and we can relay that info here.
