Windows 11 KB5048667 install fails, performance, gaming issues. Windows 11 24H2 affected

Dozen and more users are reaching out to me with complaints of Windows 11 KB5048667 installation issues. In some cases, it’s also causing severe performance issues. First, let’s talk about the installation issues with Windows 11 24H2 December 2024 Patch Tuesday, and then I’ll talk about the performance issues.

Performance issues with Windows 11 KB5048667

Some of our readers have noticed that after installing the Windows 11 KB5048667 update for Windows 11 24H2, CPU performance isn’t the same as before. We’ve seen reports from users saying that their PCs run smoothly at first, but then, after some time, the CPU starts slowing down.

You may even find your games like Roblox and League of Legends stuttering or your system feeling more sluggish than usual, especially if it’s been running for a while since the last restart.

When’s the steam os ready ffs?

Win 11 has done nothing but fuck us all
There's not much SteamOS is going to solve for you that isn't already solved in a mainstream linux distro like Fedora, Ubuntu, Manjaro, etc. They're all easy to install¹ and completely free.

1. preferably with an AMD gpu

Just as well nobody ever pays for this thing (at least, it never gets included in price comparisons vs. consoles so I assume PC gamers just warez it or find a copy in Oxfam or something).

Bro 90% of PC gamers use Nvidia GPU's that's one hell of a caveat
I agree. But I don't want to be one of these geeks who lies to people that everything always super simple and bug-free. Many people are confused by the concept of changing their OS. If you have an AMD GPU, linux gaming will work "out of the box". If you have an Nvidia GPU, it will work, you'll just have to install some extra shit. At this point all the distros make it pretty painless.

Pop OS plays pretty nice with nvidia in my experience

I paid for Windows when it was actually good. Now you're gonna tell me the reason Windows isn't good is because we don't pay for it?

Aside from the fact that the product in 10/11 is you anyway.

If you only play games on Steam and don't care about online games just switch to Ubuntu. A good amount of modern games work just fine and emulation for 10+ year or older stuff is perfect. If you need online I'd say a PlayStation or Xbox are less painful than Windows. I made the jump last year and I'm never looking back.

i feel like a hostage to this dogshit OS
All PC gamers do

Realistically Windows is just a launcher for my games anyways, if SteamOS was real and good for regular PC's I would be gone from Windows tomorrow

Gabe knows it too, that's why he won't do it. He doesn't want to bring down the wrath of Satya upon him

All of you say SteamOS. I say first make Proton 100% compatible with all Windows games.

It basically is, afaik, every major release will run on it. Steam Deck is another story, because shoving a poorly ported AAA game that needs 200W into 20W creates a ton of issues better hardware using Proton doesn't have.

They are compatible, though. It's 99.99% the publisher/developer going out of their way to remove it. In most recent news EA implementing their kernel level POS anticheat to games that worked previously.

Just a question.
If i withdraw the newest update who might break Windows 11 do i get an updated update so to speak or do i have to install the update anyways and then the newer fix?

The issue isn't that this update is failing to install. It installs initially, but then attempts to install over and over, confusing users with multiple "installation failed" messages, in Windows Update center. The performance lost most likely is the "nocebo" effect due to users seeing these error messages.

Thanks for the heads up. Putting updates on pause on my gaming rig. I updated my SMB server pc to this update and now the ethernet is borked. Had to stick a wifi adapter on it.

W10 ftw.

Joking aside, I'll always remember 7 as the best OS MS ever did. I'll probably be interested in 11 once they stop updating it.

Ubisoft is doing that with their upcoming AC game as well.

I hope the January update can resolve some of these 24H2 issues. Windows 11 was fantastic before 24H2.

Honestly, I still don't understand why they've not released a consumer Windows OS WITHOUT all that stupid bloat that is caused from backwards compatibility.
