John Cordell, with the help of others, have managed to take the Privateer experience and give it some excellent graphical updates (not to mention just having it run on XP AND Linux AND Macs) without compromising the core gameplay. I played the .9 Remake but now they've just released Privateer Gemini Gold 1.01 which is a lot better. The bases are there and animated, the entire storyline is there along with the expansion pack Righteous Fire, the weapons, the voice acting, the ships, THE MUSIC, all there!

The graphics have gotten a sweet bost but still maintains the Privateer feeling.

Best of all it's 100% free. I'm sorry for sounding like a shameless marketer but I know some people here would love to hear about this update. I forgot about it for a while and I'm glad to see that it's still being supported and updated. Times like these you gotta love the interent.

This game is the true spiritual successor to Elite.

Nothing since including Freelancer and X:Beyond the Frontier and its sequels has done the space fighter/trader genre better than Privateer. I'm going to play this all night long.

Probably everyone's favourite quote. It was strange that it didn't appear in the add-on. And Privateer's player character is probably one of the coolest game characters of all time. Also nice music.

Privateer 2 was utter crap, though. Probably because the lead developer insisted in delivering the story and concept himself just like his brother or something. But I don't care for the reasons too much so I didn't look into any details.

Gemini Gold's pretty good, but my favorite Wing Commander fan project is the Standoff mod for Secret Ops. It's a story set not long after Wing Commander 2 done in the same engine as Prophecy.
