I feel that it was an important scene for the same reason Grzi mentioned.It wasn't so much about story importance, rather than the tone it set. In the middle of a big battle between armies, it reminded everyone that the world in Berserk is not the normal world, but one where monsters and gods exist.
To continue playing devil's advocate...perhaps they felt it didn't fit the specific tone of the movie and what they wanted to emphasize this time around, for better or for worse, considering the first film had already established that there are some supernatural elements at work. I think we all know the original manga had more than enough elbow room to insert little bits and pieces of build-up or foreshadowing, but it's clear these movies are simply telling a very abridged version of the story.
