wireless router recommendations

hi my router just died and i need a new one. i can spend up to $200. any recommendations?

i have about like 5 pcs and 3 laptops in my house but usually only 1 pc and a couple laptops are online at once
 
wait for some of the new crap that was shown at CES

i saw a netgear one with 2tb drive built in

used netgear for a long time and had no problems
 
Don't get a Linksys, they're shitty. My old roommate and I nearly set that damn thing on fire after a while, it sucked so much. I've found Netgear and D-Link are usually pretty good.

I have to disagree, I got a linksys WRT54G for nearly a decade and it works great till this day

Ignore this, that used to be the case, but they are god tier now, d-link used to be tops, but their support is shit now, and perfectly good hardware is now useless because of their lack of software support.

I have the 3200 and aside from the odd 2 second cutout on very rare occasions its a beaut
 
I just got a cheap Linksys E1200. It's not duel band, but it has decent range and I get the speed we pay for here (which is only 7-10mbps). Plus I'm the only one who uses all the bandwidth
 
The E3000 is $70 at newegg. I absolutely love mine once flashed to tomatousb. You use the guest network feature but it's well worth it for the stability once you get tomatousb on there. Stock firmware definitely blows.
 
d-link dir-655 - it is by far the best router on the planet. had it for years and it has worked flawlessly using both 802.11n and gigabit ethernet. only thing that its lacking is dual band, but otherwise its extremely solid, plus its $79 on amazon. i wont consider anything else.
 
I like how people are still recommending routers when he bumped the thread asking for help with the one he's already bought.

Sorry I can't help op, but maybe now somebody will help you now that I pointed it out...

Just bought a refurbished E3000 recently.

Runs fine with custom firmware.

As for the OP, run custom firmware for your E4200 like dd-wrt or tomatousb (my favorite).

Follow the directions here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_E4200

Just be sure to clear the NVRAM (layman terms: the router) to defaults, flash to the custom firmware, and reset to defaults again.

The 30/30/30 method that dd-wrt users constantly describe is absolutely obsessive compulsive behavior. Resetting the router to default/factory settings is good enough and waiting 5 minutes after a reset.

Also as indicated the instructions, after flashing the mini 16773 build, seems like the December 2011 build (18000, nv60k) is the best for this router.

Flash the router using an ethernet cable or else you can get a brick.

Plus the wireless performance sucks for large wireless transfers as in needing performance over 1 MB/sec.

Great range and rock solid stability though, especially with Tomato and the v1-v4 hardware variants.

Linksys continues to milk that perception with those high WRT54GL prices.

thanks, i might do this

so it turns out i was only lagging terribly when someone was using skype (on a laptop through wireless). still a big issue because it didn't happen with my last router and people here use skype a lot
 
Hi,

Don't mean to bump an old thread, but I have a question about wireless routers and this seemed a good topic to post in.

Im looking to upgrade/replace an old wireless router in the restaurant my wife works at. The current router they have is rather old, slow, has a weak broadcast range and can not handle a lot of simultaneous connections.
Their budget for this project is around $200, and most likely I'll be tasked with setting the thing up. They are looking for something with no network password (for the ease of their guests) and with a range of around 500 ft. Any suggestions?
