With the Activision deal possibly being approved, what could stop MS from literally buying the industry at this point

Who are the 2 users voting no, by the way? :messenger_tears_of_joy: MSFT themselves said it crystal clear that they'll keep making acquisitions once the ABK deal is done.

Look at all the devs they have now and look at all the must have AAA amazing exclusives that they simply aren't producing.

I wouldn't be too worried about it to be honest. Nintendo and Sony will keep them at bay by just releasing better games than them.
Yeah but third party games like CoD are literally funding first party Sony titles
Just look at the sale charts for playstation. Vast majority of the top selling games are all third party games like GtA, CoD, FIFA ect
Remove those and see what happens

Clearly nothing. When not even regulators can do their job and companies have the power to bully entire countries and this kind of behavior is even praised by consumers. Frankly gamers deserve for the gaming industry to burn down again.

The question is, how many franchices are going to ruin until they stop.
That's honestly what I'm thinking.

I know some people think this line of reasoning is boot licking but honestly, who gives a shit if games come to gamepass day 1 or not? Budgets will go down and games won't be as big. Do we really want to lose even more quality in gameplay cause of some scrub neckbeard that doesn't want to buy games at retail or because parents buy their kids a Series S cause it's effectively "set it and forget it." Yea it's good for some people financially but it seems like a race to be as lowest common denominator as possible.

MS can't even manage MSGS and we know Raven is gonna be in the COD mines until the world ends 😭. It's all a waste.

Nothing , nothing stops Microsoft

Exactly this. Microsoft's management structure just doesn't seem to be working for game studios.

People are worried that Call of Duty won't be on PlayStation, but they should probably be more worried about Call of Duty actually existing in 10 years time. Look at Halo as an example.
pretty much, that's the other reason I haven't been excited for Microsoft acquiring some of my favorite companies

we'll see what happens with Obsidian and Bethesda but I'm worried that after buying 40+ studios we'll going to see a lot of closures from Xbox Game Studios in 5 years or so

Always been a concern.

Everyone is making acquisitions all the time, no reason to think things would suddenly change.

I think MS is going to cause a HUGE gaming crash. They can't sustain all of these studios and a lot will be EA'd when they underperform.
just look at how they are laying off more people today after they already laid off 10,000 people earlier this year.

I have no idea how companies who lay off that many people are allowed to buy new companies. if you cant afford to keep your current employees, why are you allowed to buy new ones?

Activision isn't being merged into Xbox Game Studios, just like Bethesda hasn't. It will be run as a separate entity just reporting directly to Spencer. It's also very very profitable as it is and sitting on $15 billion in cash.

As an owner of both consoles, I'm happy about this. Sony have such a Monopoly MS could do some cool shit with this deal to level the playing field a bit. If they bring WoW to console somehow that could be huge for them

Yeah they will buy most of the industry up but close a bunch of "underperforming" ones, the people who leave will start new studios and they will try and buy those too.

Cash flow and studio integration.

Microsoft has expenses to pay, other businesses to develop etc, so not every dollar they bring in is gonna go to their gaming division.

The other issue is studio integration, they need time to onboard those studios and publishers and get them in sync. This part is actually tough and the reason why a lot of mergers tend to destroy value rather than add.

Continued acquisitions would certainly recreate many of the conditions that lead to the 83' crash, but its a push to suggest that its a circumstance that is likely to re-occur simply due to how much larger the market is nowadays.

That being said I do agree that MS are really going to struggle to manage a portfolio of this size; there will surely be casualties.

All valuable IP will be gobbled up by a few big companies like what happened in Hollywood. Apple, Tencent, Saudis, MS, Amazon will own the industry.

Microsoft already lost Bungie, Zynga and Housemarque; tried to buy Sega and Square Enix without success ...

And Sony Group is about to spend big money.

The real question is: "How many studios will close thanks to MS in the next years?"
Right. People think too much on "free day 1 games" but it's like, if it's not profitable or doesn't meet sales quotas, it's not gonna stick around. Look at all the things that streaming services are doing. So many shows are one and done, whether they be good or bad.

I think of all the studios that EA has destroyed through acquisition ,I have no reason to think MS would be different if they feel like things aren't meeting their financial goals. Thankfully I don't care about ABK outside of a potential new Raven IP but I do worry for Bethesda and Tango.

I prefer Sony but am not a fanboy (I don't even like the bulk of their 1st party games).

Why do you think they have a monopoly? Genuinely curious, not trying to start a tit for tat.

MS, Sony and Tencent will keep buying studios. Amazon will jump in to. If they all keep buying then its not really anticompetitive. ABK isn't anticompetitive because the games will continue to be multiplatform. I know people are saying MS will make ABK games exclusive after 10 yrs but i call bullshit. In 11 yrs there will still be CoD on a playstation platform.

Nothing. They already clearly want Sega. They will probably buy square, Capcom, Sega, Konami, namco, CD project, and probably take 2 over the next few years.

They don't even need to make money from Xbox to do so. They just scoop some more mulah off the office and windows money and lock Sony out. Nintendo and Microsoft will be all that's left.

Oh boi I can wait to pay 40 dollars/month just to play shitty Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty and EA Sports FC with microtransactions hell even worse than 5 years ago.

For anybody think they will still sell those games, you are delusional. They will lock you in an ecosystem and you will own nothing and be happy about it.

this is the same nonsense we heard a decade ago when EA Access launched and the same nonsense we heard would be happening "in a few years" when GamePass launched. It's just like the Great Reset in politics. It's all tin foil hat nonsense that is constantly kicked down the line until maybe eventually one day someone might kind of eventually probably be a little right about something. Yet we're all supposed to be scared shitless right now about it.

It's taking them 18+ months to acquire Activision, if that even goes through. Yet they are somehow supposed to buy everyone else too?

Disney kept buying stuff, Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Fox, etc and look where they are at now. Look what happened to all the studios EA bought.
Buying everything has never lead to the kind of domination long term that people fear.. Companies always get too big to be management effectively in the long run and collapse due its own weight.

Activision-Blizzard is already a shell of its former self, it will just be an empty husk, another empty logo in 5-10 years.

If in 2020 after Microsoft buy Bethesda, if anybody says they will keep Starfield, TES6 exclusive they will be called delisional, daddy Phil promise he won't do that.

After we got confirmation in 2021, if anybody say Microsoft buy Activision Blizzard for 70B they would be deemed insane.

It's now 2023, EA next?

Yes due to one franchise. Their other franchises aren't so hot and those who aren't on COD will likely get the chopping block.

He didn't promise to keep those games multiplatform.

They can't get any big publishers after this.

They will just buy more publishers and studios, it's all they've ever done. They'll probably Lock everything in Game Pass or charge whatever they want to have a license to play the game.

I couldn't give a rats ass about the majority of games ABK have but it doesn't take a genius to see how the future of the industry could be affected by this. I own all platforms to be clear so still have access to these games regardless of whatever decisions Microsoft make going forward.

Remember, these people are running a business. They don't give a fuck about this industry outside of how it generates money for them.
