‘Coco' Repeats as Box Office Winner With $26.1 Million

Disney-Pixar's animated comedy ”Coco" easily repeated as the winner of the North American box office with a solid $26.1 million at 3,987 locations during a moderate weekend.

The third weekend of Warner Bros.-DC Entertainment's ”Justice League" finished second with about $16.5 million at 3,820 sites, with the superhero tentpole dropping 60%.

Lionsgate's ”Wonder" continued to perform well with $12.5 million at 3,449 venues to come in third followed by Disney-Marvel's fifth frame of ”Thor: Ragnarok" with $9.7 million at 3,148 sites, the fourth weekend of Paramount's ”Daddy's Home 2" with $7 million at 3,403 venues and Fox's fourth weekend of ”Murder on the Orient Express" with $6.7 million at 3,201 screens.

Awards contenders ”Lady Bird" and ”Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" tied for seventh place with $4.5 million each. A24's ”Lady Bird" expanded by 403 sites to 1,194 and Fox Searchlight's ”Three Billboards" doubled its run to 1,430 screens.

The major studios opted to rely on holdovers during the session and held off on any wide openings. A24 generated strong performance from its limited launch of James Franco's ”The Disaster Artist" with $1.2 million at 19 locations for a $64,254 per screen average. Fox Searchlight's ”The Shape of Water" saw an impressive $166,800 at two theaters and Woody Allen's ”Wonder Wheel" debuted with a solid $140,555 at five sites through Amazon.

Sony Classics' second weekend of ”Call Me By Your Name" posted a stellar $281,280 at four screens for a 10-day total of $908,175. It won best feature at the Gotham Independent Film Awards on Nov. 27.

”Coco" has now taken in $108.7 million in its first 12 days following a 47% decline from its opening. The film, based on the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico, centers on a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician. The film has been embraced by critics with a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Disney's ”Moana" performed slightly better during the same period last year with $119.8 million after 12 days.

The studio has not released a price for ”Coco." Disney-Pixar titles are usually budgeted in the $175 million to $200 million range.

”Justice League" has finished its first 17 days with $197.3 million domestically. The movie, which teams up the DC characters in the same manner as Disney-Marvel's superheroes, is the 10th highest-grossing title released in 2017. It's been the lowest performer among the five films in the DC Extended Universe, with ”Wonder Woman" grossing $275.1 million in its first 17 days in June and ”Suicide Squad" taking in $262.4 million in its first 17 days last year.

Gal Gadot stars as Wonder Woman along with Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg as the superheroes team up to save the world. Warner Bros. has not disclosed the production cost, which is believed to be as much as $300 million.

I know it's early December post-Thanksgiving, but Coco doesn't look it's setting the box office on fire. This is Moana-level of "success".

Agree doing really good but not great.

Didn’t know until now that Justice’s budge could be up to 300 million dollars. That’s insanely expensive

Reshoots and the CGI additions done in 3 months.
There really is a decent film in there in places, kinda.

Watched Coco today with 2 kids.
25-30 mins of advertisements followed by 20-25-ish "Frozen" mini movie was a bit to much for the younger.

Overall, good cartoon, 97% seems a bit to much, but 90%+ definitely.

If there were a big, rival, full-length, animated movie released around the same time (like, say, Sing 2), the contrast in box office would be more jarring. Coco would probably sink further.

But I know GAF worships Pixar...

Have you actually seen the film? Coco is a very good movie. Pixar's track record has been a bit spotty lately with Cars 3 and Good Dinasaur being duds, really enjoyed Coco though

Pretty tame box office results for this weekend.

Anything big being released next weekend?

Yep... I think many expected it to do better.

Wonder what happened there...

This is about box office...

Moana is also a good movie, but it underperformed against a movie that wasn't really any better, but had more mass appeal.

Looks like it simply held position due to lack of anything bigger releasing this week.

No one really releases movies they want to do well during this time. Either it has a small budget, or it's released just for Oscars.

As for Coco and JL, hopefully video sales will be better. But if the budget for JL was 300 Million, than I can see it hitting more than $600 from World Wide, so I wouldn't call it bomba yet.

Olaf's fucking adventure leaving theatres after this week (hooray):

Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, one of Disney’s less lauded short films, will soon be leaving theaters after screening in front of Pixar’s Coco, the animated film inspired by Mexico’s Day of the Dead. Yet while some have suggested it’s a direct response to poor audience reactions, EW has learned that isn’t the case.

Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was always promoted and scheduled as a limited run, EW has confirmed, with its theatrical play slated to conclude next week, as has recently been reported.

Mashable was the first to report that Olaf’s Frozen Adventure would end its theatrical run Dec. 8. The outlet reported that Disney had “directed theaters … to remove the deeply unpopular 22-minute Frozen short” from future screenings.

In addition, a user on Reddit, identifying as a movie theater worker, claimed to have received a note from Disney regarding the decision. “Please note that the run of Olaf’s Frozen Adventure playing before Coco will end after 12/7,” the alleged note stated. “Starting on Friday 12/8 no more Olaf shorts should be up on screen. With the extra 22 minutes of running time back, we would appreciate if you could get in an extra show if possible.”

In light of the information provided to EW, the alleged note appears to be more of a reminder and less of a notification of removal. “This was always promoted as a limited run so it’s not really a story — the end of our Olaf theatrical play is coming next week,” a Disney representative told EW. “All our ads and messaging called it as such.”

Featuring the return of Olaf (voiced by Josh Gad), the short — which is the first from Walt Disney Animation to be screened in front of a Pixar film — sees the snowman from Frozen on a search for holiday traditions for Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel). While most Pixar shorts run around 10 minutes, this Disney Animation work runs for more than 20 minutes.

Mashable called the pairing of Olaf’s Frozen Adventure with Coco, which received glowing reviews and recently won Best Animated Film from the New York Film Critics Circle, “culturally tone-deaf.” Other critics have echoed the sentiment.

“We are creatures of habit, and Olaf’s Frozen Adventure eventually feels like the grinning house guest who won’t leave, even though the party was supposed to clear out long ago,” reported The Washington Post. “As each successive song in the four-tune reel cues up, moviegoers’ reactions can be heard to switch from laughing irritation to growing mockery to outright anger.”

What did you guys think of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri?
Seems to be very well reviews and actually increases at the box office week for week.

Well deserved victory for Coco.
They really shouldn't have show the frozen bullshit at the beginning.
Coco can more than carry itself.
Totally backfired. I can see the scene at Disney when someone might've thought this could have been somewhat of a good idea?

"Let's tack on a 22 minute short in addition to the commercials and trailers before Coco... will be a HIT! Whiny, tired children and frazzled parents will love it!"

"But sir/ma'am, that sounds like the making of a PR disaster... forcing people to watch something they aren't expecting and didn't ask for..."

"SILENCE you intern swine. You're fired, get out!"

Sad that Justice League is still making that much money.

Can't wait for Shape of Water to come out in my city. Probably the only movie I'm looking forward to this month. Star Wars is just there....

They are spinning ti, in Mexico the Olaf's short was so hated that many people complained on one cinema's (Cinemex) social media and they took it down, it was only show for a week if not less, and then all the other chains followed. When i went to watch Coco, Olaf was still showing and you could actually hear many many kids complaining about it. I was going to leave until I heard a small boy complain with a really hurt voice "OH! Mom please tell me this is not the movie we came to watch." That brought me back to life, lol.

Cinemex basically relaunched the movie with the tag line "No Forzen short"

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
The Frozen short backfired on Disney big time, but people are still coming out to see the movie. I get the logic behind it. Frozen is huge, Coco's prospects were pretty tepid a few months ago. Tack on something insanely popular to get people in, boost Coco a little. They could've reacted to it better because we knew it was too damn long from how the Mexico release went. Could've easily had it play after Coco for US audiences.

Justice League isn't even going to be in the Top 10 domestic earners this year. Didn't see that coming. Quality aside, I would have expected it could at least do that. Even after video, they're gonna take a loss on this one. Be curious to see how Shazam and Aquaman perform after all this.

EDIT: Should correct myself, isn't going to finish in the Top 10
