TOKYO Nine railways in the Tokyo metropolitan area and a subway line started operating women-only cars Monday during the morning rush-hour period to prevent groping. The nine are the Tokyo Metro, Tobu, Seibu, Keisei, Keio, Odakyu, Tokyu, Keihin and Sagami railways.
Each train bound for central Tokyo has one women-only car during the morning rush through 9:30 a.m., railway and subway officials said.
am glad to have a separate car because I don't like being touched by men in the train," said Takako Shimizu, 32-year-old office worker, after using a women-only car on the Hanzomon Line of the Tokyo Metro.
Railways in the Kansai region centering on Osaka have already been operating women-only cars. Railways in the Tokyo area have been slower to introduce them, citing much more crowded platforms.
In the Tokyo metropolitan area, the Yokohama municipal subway introduced women-only cars in 2003, becoming the first subway operator to offer the service in the area during the busiest time.
The JR Saikyo Line linking Saitama and Tokyo, and the Rinkai Line of Tokyo Waterfront Area Rapid Transit Inc. followed suit last month.
The Shinjuku Police Station and East Japan Railway Co. held a ceremony Monday to start a campaign to eliminate crimes like groping and secretly taking photos of women.
The police station's chief Tetsuya Hara said in his speech at the ceremony, "Each railway company has stood up to eliminate groping. We want to do our part by tightening security in trains."
In February, Tokyo police said the number of reported groping incidents on Tokyo trains surged about threefold to 2,201 in 2004 from 778 cases in 1996. (Kyodo News)
