Woops, meant to post this yesterday. Can't say I disagree with the choice. :)

LONDON (AP) — Britpop group Oasis' 1995 hit Wonderwall topped a radio station's poll of the best British songs of all time on Monday.

Listeners to Britain's Virgin Radio voted the anthem by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher's band their all time favorite British hit.

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody came in second place and Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven placed third. Queen and the Beatles had the most entries of eight each in the poll of the best 100 songs, as voted by 8,300 listeners to the radio station.

Best British Songs, as voted by Virgin Radio listeners:

1. Oasis —Wonderwall

2. Queen —Bohemian Rhapsody

3. Led Zeppelin —Stairway to Heaven

4. The Beatles —Let It Be

5. John Lennon —Imagine

6. The Police —Every Breath You Take

7. The Jam —Going Underground

8. Verve —Bittersweet Symphony

9. Robbie Williams —Angels

10. The Stranglers —Golden Brown

Full list is here. Nice to see a Squeeze tune on there! :D

What a terrible list. Yeah, Keane's made two of the greatest British songs of all time. :rolleyes

Best choice is "Wuthering Heights", by far.

Any list that puts The Clash and David Bowie below Verve and Robbie Williams is immediately suspect, if not entirely lacking in any kind of credibility.

Well it is a listener poll after all. I'm sure if they did one of these in the States you'd end up with shit like Britney Spears or other "suspect" songs ranked quite high. For the most part though, the tunes are quality.

goddamit, Griese!
choices 2-5 are all better than Wonderwall.

also, i love the police myself....but that song at #6 is a joke.

You have to get to number 7 on the list to even get to a marginally excellent song. I thought British people had better taste than this.

Of course, if this were a 'merkin list, something by Toby Keith would be #1.

edit:

Best choice is "Wuthering Heights", by far.

I love you

Mods, permission to call anyone who says Stairway to Heaven, Imagine, and Let it Be are anything less than some of the best songs of all time absolutely insane?!

that might be the worst thing i've ever read. no matter how elitist you are...let it be, imagine, bohemian rhapsody, stairway? none of those are even "marginally excellent?"

that is beyond bad taste. that is "hey, i'll try and get some attention by being a total ass."
mission accomplished.

Radiohead should be on that list somewhere.

Especially when you see:
17. Coldplay - Yellow
31. Coldplay - Trouble
38. Coldplay - The Scientist
60. Coldplay - In my place
77. Coldplay - Clocks

Were Radiohead disqualified or something!?

I am sorry. Maybe if I go listen to some Dredg I'll someday manage to appreciate such fine compositions as Imagine. Mark David Chapman was the greatest thing to ever happen to pop music, btw.

Actually, I think all three are, at best, VASTLY overrated.

I really wish Achilles' Last Stand got the praise Stairway does. Achilles' is by far the best Zeppelin song, IMO.
So many Zeppelin songs go under the radar....Ten Years Gone, Hey Hey What Can I Do, Friends, Tangerine, etc.

Why? That song is a classic. It's also their most recognizable song.

they just have much better songs. most recognizable, probably. but not their best.
I would have rather seen King of Pain in there.

I did'nt know Queen and Led Zep were British

:lol Hell, it happens...I didn't know The Who were Brits. It's stunning how many monster rock bands came from the British Isles...seems they've pretty much owned that scene since The Beatles.

Anyway, I take it Ireland wasn't part of Britain for this poll, what with the lack of U2 songs. :lol

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Nothing more than a list of most popular brit pop songs. Sometimes I think these reader-opinion-polled lists are hardly any better than those shit top-100 lists magazines put out every other month.

And Holy shit....Queen I can understand, maybe The Who...maybe...but not knowing Led Zeppelin are british? Damn dude...

At least it wasn't that horrific Crazy Frog song.
Fucking chavs... :p

i can't believe it's at #1 - i'm awaiting the next abomination from 'sweetie' or 'nessie' the dragon - or maybe the disco koala?

I always preferred Don't Look Back In Anger off that Oasis album if anything; Wonderwall just never did it for me. Of course, I wouldn't put either at the top of any list, but hey.
