What is the difference between checking your personal home email address at work, and using your work email address for personal business?

I have classmates who, due to the rules of their companies, cannot check their personal email while working, but using the work's email address is okay.

Isn't it the same thing?

probably.

Work emails have content filters sometimes though, etc etc.

The difference is that the company is potentially liable for what you say in private email from a company address, if I remember correctly.

The difference is that the company can keep copies of every email coming into and going out of your work email account.

My company says that personal email accounts are off limit so that viruses cannot be introduced into the intranet. But it's more likely so they can record everything incoming and outgoing to make sure we're not divulging things we shouldn't be. I don't think sending personal email on business accounts is a problem, as long as you're not sending out internal information.

Ditto what jinx said. But also, think of it this way:

Work e-mail: ability to control what comes in, and if necessary, what goes out. Personal e-mail: the opposite
