Worst aspects of amazing games

MGS2-3: the controls, they worked fine for MGS1 ...but these new games needed new controlls, it makes me sad too, cause i would REALLY like to play both games, i love the story and how everything is put together, but the controlls are just sloppy. its not even that they are completely terrible, its just that some little things get anoying all the time...

Metroid Fusion: The fact that once you get to the end you cannot backtrack to find more energy tanks, etc. Got to the end pretty easily and didn't pick up a lot of stuff, but couldn't finish it because of that, not enough energy. If it would have allowed me to go back and explore and find the hidden items I missed, it would probably be my favorite Metroid.

You definitely can go back, that's exactly what I did. I beat the game, but wanted 100%, so I went back and got it. Sorry I don't remember details, but I know you end up with access to every area. I'm sure an FAQ details it somewhere.

I think he's talking about the countdown ... which is stupid since most Metroids have this. they don't let you save in it either, even though you cross a save station so they do encourage the exploration.

but that was the best part, going back and exploring everything, and finding the truely hidden links between the stations

Adam locks all the doors to each sector when you enter the Navigation Room at the end. There's no way to go back and get anything you missed. So if you didn't go find the hidden stuff during the game, you're screwed.

Actually I'm not, I'm talking about the part right before you battle Samus-X. This is before the countdown. You're locked off from the sectors once you enter the Navigation Room.

No, I mean before you beat the game. You can't backtrack until you beat it. I wanted to backtrack before I beat it because I was having issues w/ the last bosses. It bugged me that I couldn't.

Oh OK, I should have read your post better. Sorry about that.

How many e-tanks did you have, just out of curiosity? I think I only had 12 or so out of the 20. I didn't find it too difficult, especially the first phase.

they lock (though I don't remember being able to save after that) ---- but, if i remeber correctly there's a hidden path closer to the landing-strip that leads you back into the facility and you can go anywhere from there.

I don't have my walkthrough right now, but I remember thinking the same thing "oh I can't get back!" --- But somehow I made it back, and found almost 100%

Valkyrie Profile - Some of those story scenes were too damn long.. the fact you couldnt skip them really hurt the replay value too. One of the best RPGs ever though

KoTOR - Dont find the game amazing myself. Incredibly glitchy and unpolished.. Shitty level design for the most part too. The sequel was even worse in all those regards.

F-Zero GX - I abolutely love the game but F-Zero X on N64 had better track design, handling and sountrdack.

Ultima IX - Even today, it's a graphically impressive game, especially in how beautifully some of the areas are rendered. The combat is fairly solid, the voice acting doesn't annoy, and it's chock-full of more hidden secrets than perhaps any other game I know of.

Unfortunately, it's gestation period wasn't exactly wonderful - the mother was a heavy drinker and smoker who repeatedly got kicked in the stomach, there may have been an abortion attempt at some point, and the baby itself was dropped on the head repeatedly by the doctors.

So...you can't really blame Ultima IX for being....well, what it is. And at the same time, you can't really blame Ultima fans for saying "Oh fuck this".

Ultima IX is amazing. The worst aspect of it is that it is Ultima IX.

Being jaded has nothing to do with hating those pound-a-nail-through-your-dick conversations between Raiden and what's her name.

So you're saying that playing as Raiden isn't the problem, codec conversations are.

No to sound like a prick, but these types of threads usually dissolve into shitfests. Somebody always takes a criticism as a personal insult against their prized game of choice (MGS, Zelda, Halo, etc)

e: shit, seems to have already happened

Could not find the text "fanboys"

Huh.

Worst aspect of any great game.

I'm trying to think of bad things to say about my favorite games, but it's not easy. I honestly can't think of a single negative aspect of the original Lemmings, for example. Or Lumines.

MGS3 - Love this game immensely, but they should make me pay more when it comes to the health meter. You should be dead pretty quick with a machine gun pumped into you.

RE4 - Another game I love. The plot is weak as a whole though. Tons of cheese, and something that doesn't seem as signifigant a Resident Evil as 1 or 2. In story anyway, but they've lost the story as a whole for the series actually..

Shenmue - Amazing game! But.. The battle camera. Going into first person is not what you want in a fight against people surrounding you. It should have made the walls invisible in cramped areas, and allowed the fight to be easily visible. Also, no practicing by yourself sucks.

Any stylus use in Castlevania DoS. Proactively, any ancillary stylus use in any theoretically decent future DS games, period.

When did you ever use the stylus in DoS? Any touch screen actions I just used my finger. The ice block puzzles were a little neat, and the sealing added a bit of tension to the boss fights.

Castlevania Symphony of The Night: The ending/credits song!

:lol
I AM the wind.

Really! *Song starts playing* "Woah?! Oh, I must have gotten the bad ending!"

Great music through the entire game, then when we finally get there: Eww! ;_;
Any other song would have done better for the credits!
Even that Japanese vocal track "Nocturne" would do!

Ah, yeah, I forgot about the whole games-as-art ish category.

Worst part of Rez is definitely the gameplay.

Katamari? Spotty camera, limited score/replay appeal.

Yet, they're good games.

gotta say the wind waker sailing was horrible in a great game

btw whats with the sudden love for miyuru's (sp) avatar? :lol

World of Warcraft: Most of the people who play it.

Very sad but also very true.

If not for the distressingly high asshat population on any given server, I could probably just sell the rest of my games outright.

halo 1&2 - the copy and pasted level sections

half-life 2 - AI could have been way better

pd64 - bothersome framerate at some points, some levels weren't that great

Castlevania: Circle of The Moon - Spending an hour or so killing the same foe over and over again to collect the DSS card and of course the Battle Arena.

MGS3 - controls, cheesy plot and characters, and the healing/camo/map menus.
Zelda: Majora's Mask - the whole 3 day limit thing.
F-Zero GX - some shitty tracks almost ruin the game.
Half-Life - Xen.

... adding a Save function to SMB3 in SMAS and SMA4:SMB3. Game wimpification is disturbing.

That's the most annoying thing people say.

You don't have to use the save feature. If you're really so stuck on the past, you can just start a new game when you have a game over. You don't HAVE to use it.

But for those of us who don't have the time to sit down and play through Super Mario Bros. 3 from start to finish, especially in a portable game, a save feature is needed.

You realize there are harder difficulties and it's not meant to be realistic, right? Not having realistic death by a gun is not a flaw. :P

Halo 2 - I love you with all my heart sweety, but the people who play you on XBOXLive are some of the worst examples of human life on this planet. Playing with all voice muted almost ruins the point of XBL play.

Kingdom Hearts - The Little Mermaid world. For as much as I love the Little Mermaid, the whole world was just annoying as Hell.

Half-Life 2 - Out of place puzzles that served no other purpose than to throw me out of the incredible atmosphere to say "LOOK AT THESE AWESOME PHYSICS!". I'm looking at you, see-saw cinder block puzzle.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile -
when huepow sells you out at the end, that fucker

Zelda: OoT - let me change my boots about 917 times in the Water Temple, thx.

Sword of Vermilion - the guy who
takes all your weapons and such in Malaga

Any game: missing items and then not being able to access those areas again.

Agreed, I loved WW but no 'Seapona' or magic sail really pissed me off. The slow sailing really sucked alot of the fun out of exploring all the islands, one of the main reasons I haven't replayed it yet.

....and I pretty much agree with all the water temple complaints in OoT.

Agree 100%. That still is helluva impressive graphics.

I enjoyed it, maybe not as much as U7 or U8. Got to check how it runs now on newer comps.

GT4- no online play

Half Life 2- the loading in between sections

GTA:SA- dissapointing ending

World of Warcraft- loved this game, but by the time I hit lvl 35 it became tedious and the quest were simply boring.

Sliding in F-Zero GX. I want it to be L+right or R+left again :(.

GT4: Having seconds add on to your time if you hate the other car in rally mode.

MGS2: Boring Plant level design.

PSO: Not really all that fun when playing alone.

Shenmue: Asking people the same questions over and over again.

Ninja Gaiden: camera

Almost forgot..

Viewtiful Joe: THE MAGNIFICENT FIVE or whatever level. Fighting bosses more than once in a game back to back is archaic. Boss Rush mode is fine, but not as part of the main level. Ditto for Megaman.

Actually, I'd argue that CotM is the one modern Castlevania that doesn't completely partake in the worst aspect of all modern Castlevanias: repeatedly grinding a monster/whole room trying to get rare item/soul. Slightly better in Aria thanks to Black Panther soul (although Soul Eater and Rare Rings are often all but worthless), CotM really did this right by having the Thief Class max the hell out of the Luck stat. Why won't you make us a real man's luck modifier, IGA?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, maybe that this is encouraging trolls? Naw because people are listing games that they like, and critisizing those games.

No, a save feature is not needed. Just use the warp whistles.

Let me amend my statement, actually. I have nothing against a game save/SUSPEND feature. I dislike the implementation of the save feature in SMAS and SMA4:SMB3 as it essentially amounts to an infinite number of extra lives. What's even worse about SMA4 is that beating the game allows you to play any level at any time, essentially removing any impetus to play the game again.

Bah. I'm just whining now. I just wish the Super Mario Bros. games had more of the classic "arcade style action" gameplay left in them, as opposed to the sprawling (and less interesting) exploration aspects brought in with Super Mario World. SMB3 seems like the perfect balance of the two.
