Did about a month ago. Southwest has nobody sitting in center seats so it was fine. Hours long layovers less so.

Planes aren't the issue, it's the airports and people acting like complete idiots. Nothing is really important to justify putting someone at risk in that situation, if you need to you can drive and if that's too much of a hassle you need to ask if it's in everyone's best interest or if you're being selfish

Pure vacation or visiting family?
If it's pure vacation, I'd probably hold off (besides, I've been on a pure vacation with a 2 year old, not very fun, jet lag and early nights in a hotel room.)
If you are going to visit with family you haven't seen in a while I vote for going. There is something special about your child meeting family members for the first time and seeing the instant bond.
