I live in Japan and it's a lowkey heartbreak for my girl and other local friends that the Olympics might not - as they figure it - go ahead at all. They're pretty aware of the economic problems their country is facing, and the idea that this huge investment might suddenly disappear - along with all those billions - is a pretty present trauma for a lot of people here.

As such I hope very much that the games will be able to go ahead at, or near, full capacity next summer despite this ass-timing COVID-19 virus.

(I personally would go to an event here if a legit vaccine had been found and dispersed, and the events didn't have too many people from other countries where a mask is considered pussyclothing and manhugs are the norm...)

Anyway my questions to you are manifold:

- Would you go to the Olympics in Japan next summer if it was deemed safe (and you had tickets etc)?
- What would it take for you to think it's safe to go to Japan for the Olympics?
- Do you think the Olympics will go ahead in any capacity?
- Do you feel sorry for Japan, having a one-off catastrophe shit all over their hugely expensive Olympics?

The better question is would Japan allow the rest of the world to come visit for the Olympic? I’m sure they’ll make exceptions for athletes and officials provided they quarantine before the games, but I’d wager that they would limit overseas visitors to the Pacific Rim countries and possibly NZ/Australia.

Before covid it would have been a clumsy and overcrowded circus for the most part, you couldn't pay me to visit (...unless it's a lot of money obviously). But if it does happen next year it might be a better experience, since the world is having second thoughts about traveling. I'm not worried about covid

Japan already suffers from over-tourism. I don't know how much of an effect covid will still have on that next summer.

If it's business as usual in addition to all the people coming for the Olympics. It will probably be a nightmare.

Yes.

99% of covid is all in your head. Once you realize how the virus was (or wasn't) isolated, the limitations of the PCR tests, the way hospital staff was reshuffled, how so many deaths were misattributed to the virus, the incredibly irresponsible, sensationalized reporting which makes everyone unnecessarily afraid... You go back to wishing everything was back to normal ASAP because this response made no sense from top to bottom.

fuck no way to far for me and with corona not even a chance.

Also olympics are going to be a joke anyway, most sport people sad on there ass for half a year or so and are totally out of shape.

I wanted to go to Japan this past May but my trip was cancelled due to Covid. If they are allowing tourism by next summer I will absolutely be trying to go, and will try to see Men's US basketball if the timing works out

I'm already in Korea so yeah I would in a heartbeat. I really hope travel restrictions here are loosened soon because as much as I like this country a year here and nowhere else is driving me crazy.

I need new foreign culture exposure to make me feel comparatively more at home Korea.

I'd love to go to Japan next summer but would I have to attend the olympics? Watching fucking sports should not be anyones priorities if they visit Japan.

I live in Japan too and one of the biggest dreams of my whole life is to be able to go to an Olympics. I’ve waited decades for this chance and when I got tickets to the event I was happier than you could imagine. When they were delayed I was heartbroken. As we get closer each day to the new date and the pandemic just keeps getting worse, and especially my and others concerns here about the truth around the numbers of those infected in Japan being real or not, The prospect of a total cancellation of an Olympics and my losing my dream would be very very very hard for me to take emotionally. And I’ve dealt with so much lately in terms of bad news and depression, it surely would be the most heartbreaking moment of my life.

that being said, I’m still holding out hope that the Olympics will happen and I’m still planning on going. I’m not going to miss perhaps my only chance to go (especially since they won’t be rescheduled again and I doubt the IOC will give a games to Japan in 2032 or later as a consolation for whats happened), but I will take every precaution I need to in order to go.I hope so much they happen, but even the giant Olympic fan I am knows that I should get ready for disappointment again next year just in case.

I don't like crowds which is why I travel to Japan during the Typhoon season (around September) when there are the least tourists around, so the Olympics would make me change my schedule to travel probably during the winter or summer. That said though, I usually spend most of my time on Kyushu in the highlands and there are no tourists there at any time of the year :D

If I trust anyone to handle it well it's the Japanese. They have more experience than we do in the west of handling viruses like this and they are a well organised and financed nation filled with a respectful and compliant population.
I would go if I had tickets.

I came across this video yesterday, and he raises an interesting point :

"My next bold prediction is : if they do hold the 2020 Olympics in 2021, that will be THE shining example rolled-out of the Covid police-state that they're going to implement here in Japan as an example for the whole world ; and it will come with all the bells and whistles, with all of the real time tracking and contact tracing and vaccines, certificates and health passports."

So would I go THOSE Toyko Olympics, 2021 ?
Probably not.

- I mean i would if my COE clears but i mean...covid . Company put in the new applications which finally reopened on OCT 15th.....if its anything like the last two times i expect a 6 month wait..and thats only IF the country reopens .

- nothing, my company has no problems and besides general precautions things are pretty open over there now..unlike here in LA where they shut the city down to shit...tons of local businesses are closed and boarded up since the riots and never reopened.

- I think olympics will go on in 2021, it wont be as big of an affair and Japan in general will lose money...i think baseball in the US this season will be what it looks like...Japans economy will tank if it doesnt start letting more people in soon really

- yes but no if the country keeps acting like its 1633 for too long

I don't really have any interest in the Olympics, but I'd be happy to come visit for other reasons. Don't care about Covid.

Also, I wish them well, but I don't feel sorry for Japan in particular as the whole world seems to have gone insane. The US panic and overreaction has cost us the greatest economy in the history of the world and our politicians continue to cripple us for political gain. Hopefully all nations find sanity and renewed prosperity.

When I went to Beijing last year, we went to see the Olympic buildings with some more famous architecture. It was the least interesting part of our trip. A very cool looking, empty stadium that's so big it's not really practical to use for much else, and a couple interesting buildings in a giant, empty concrete park.

Olympics are almost always a giant waste of money for the host country. Japan doesn't need that to be worth visiting. There's so much cool stuff to see in Japan already.

No, but not because of anything Covid related, purely due to the amount of time I'd need to take off work for both travel, the games themselves and the jetlag. I'd prefer to visit Japan to see Japan, I'll goto the Olympics in a country closer to home.

I would if I could travel to Japan, but I probably would check out other things instead of the olympic games. Then again, I won't be able to go to Japan because I won't be able to afford it in the first place.

Turns out that traveling to the other side of the planet isn't cheap.

Of course you can go to Japan if you really want to. Travel can be cheap if you think outside the box. I went to Japan a couple of years ago and spent under $2k total for a three week trip. It was the best trip of my life.

To answer the question of the thread: Yes I would go although I don’t care for the olympic games myself. I wanna go to the Super Mario World theme park!

It's definitely not free, but don't tell yourself it's impossible either. I went last year on a guided tour for a week and the upfront cost was under $2k for the entire thing with flight. But there's always more money you need to be truly prepared and enjoy yourself as well. And this was before tourism and air travel collapsed and may have substantially lowered prices on some things. Save up, plan for it, and it's possible.

And that muggy summer weather, and travelers who forgot their deodorant and don't know which store to get antiperspirant, if they ever used deodorant in their lives. Japan is great, when it's orderly and less crowded
