WOW: Over 1.5 Million Served

It shouldn't apply to ANY.

I agree 100%. The current server stability issues in WoW are horrible. I just happen to have been lucky enough to land on one of the 'good' servers. I wouldn't even for a second defend the situation, it's a big mess and it needs fixing.

I can't believe someone was so quick to try to defend server queues. He must have a specific reason for defending them...

If this was aimed at me - no, I do not work for Blizzard, and no, I'm not a viral marketer. To the best of my knowledge, around 25% of the WoW servers have been experiencing fucking awful stability issues (i.e. queues, going down every night at peak hours multiple times, for at least the last week). This is a known issue, and I have no idea if/when it'll be fixed. It's clearly not acceptable.

As I said before, I guess I have been lucky to land on a 'good' server. It actually went down earlier this afternoon for an hour, but for the most part has been pretty stable. I have never seen a login queue, and very rarely any downtime.

If you still think I'm a Blizzard employee, then please send me my fucking pay cheque.

While these aren't exactly concrete subscriber numbers, it's definitely secured it's spot as the 4th most popular MMORPG in the world.

#1, Ragnarok Online (~17 million)
#2, Lineage (~2.2 million)
#3, Lineage II (~2.1 million)

Next up after that is Final Fantasy XI with around 600k subscribers, so even if some of WoW's userbase doesn't stick around long, it's not going to drop off to 5th anytime soon.

p.s.- hows EQ2 doing by comparison?
As of January, it had a little over 300k users.

Square Enix is also handling the game in Japan, via it's PlayOnline service, and it'll be entering beta testing soon. It'll be interesting to see how well it does there.

i wish WoW and EQ fanboys could get along i mean really atleast both of those games are better than the grindfest scam that is known as FFXI.
Was this even necessary? I mean, really.

Lineage 1 actually has closer to 4 million.

And EQII on PlayOnline? Damn, I wish they'd let you use it on there in the US.

Well, I'm going by MMOGChart, which says:
Some press reports will say Lineage has over 4 million “subscribers”. Lineage actually has a variety of different pricing schemes, and many players access the game via Internet cybercafes rather than a more traditional monthly subscription. The numbers I have chosen to use are the “monthly access” numbers, which I feel are the most directly comparable to other monthly subscription MMOGs.
...so that's what I chose to go with. Either way, though, it ends up in 2nd place, so it's not that big of a deal.

Yup: www.playonline.com/eq2/

Seeing a Square Enix logo plastered on EQ2 seems odd to me. :P

Ragnarok Online's userbase is insane. Rightfully so, too, as the game is pretty damn fun to play, even if you can't understand 90% of the people.

Why 17 million people pay to play utter shit is beyond me. *far* beyond me. I mean, shooting a nailgun in your face is more enjoyable than RO.

Ah, that's not quite fair. FFXI, despite being the grindiest of all grindy games, has a very entertaining battle system. Assuming you're not one of the classes that no one will invite, it's a lot of fun at higher levels :)

cmon i saw fucking level 60s waiting hours to get a party just right so they could start and then teaming on on level 60 bunnys.

BUNNY!!!! a men axes swords and magic fighting a fucking BUNNY!!

I honestly wonder if gravity just adds all the people playing on pirated free servers, because I really, really cannot see how the fuck anyone would pay to play that game. Though it's in like a million and a half countries so that may account for it.

It doesn't apply to all servers, mine is fine. And no, I'm not telling you which one I'm on :)

I don't know how it is on the Normal or RP servers at launch, but in the PvP realms, a major reason for the overpopulation of about 5 or 6 servers out of the 22 PvP launched was that the Shadowbane guilds mostly ended up on those 5 or 6, (ostensiably looking for seasoned friends and enemies). That's why Shattered Hand is flat busted much of the time while Dunemaul is quiet and smooth-running.

I figure that WoW will be a veritable wasteland in a year though.

That wasn't as divisive in my mind as I'd thought it would be at first glance. I remember thinking to myself at 40, "I may bored of this in 10 1/2 month's time; but I'll enjoy every day of it." I figure I get my money's worth just Mind Controlling Allies raiding Thunder Bluff and jumping them off the cliff. :D

Yes, you do spend all your time fighting a small group of enemy types, unless you're prepared to move away from the 'accepted' levelling areas. Doesn't change the fact that the battle system is a lot of fun with a skilled group :)

heh, speaking of EQII and WoW's server issues, SOE launched a new ad campaign. Yes, these are real captures from a flash ad banner:
