To be honest you could see signs as early as 1995 with the debut of Golddust and Diesel changed tone in late 1995, specifically that title match against Bret at Survivor Series 1995. And that can also be said for the Austin 3:16 speech etc. But i'll also add a huge shift in 1997 in terms of feel for me was Chyna's debut where she destroyed Marlena, and BRET HART'S BREAKDOWN PROMO ON RAW were he snapped and said "This is BULL****". That's when it was a true signal IMO, when the white meat babyface of the 90s started to act up. Then HBK throughout the summer of 1997, DX - There's a lot of signals leading up to the start of the era in 1997 (which also happens to be WWE's best year ever along with 2000 IMO)

- This is all with WWE BTW

Really IMO the NWO forming in 1996 truly signaled the shift of late 90s pro wrestling overall and everything kinda snowballed from that moment

PSA: Always scrub your taint.
Aye, this is great for taint cleaning; very gentle:

I haven't watched wrestling in over 17-18 years, i know modern wrestling through games (the last i played was WWE SD VS RAW 2009) and through "smarks" on YouTube.

1993-2002 was when I watched wrestling and the new generation era was my childhood and i love the superstars of that era a lot, i love the Attitude era too but now through YT i find that i'm more nostalgic for 1995-1997.

Bret Hart, Shawn Michales, Razor Ramon, Diesel, The Undertaker and Yokozona were what we used to talk about weekly at school.

I was a huge Bret Hart fan and can we just talk about Wrestlemania The Arcade game and how awesome it was? Memories of playing it with my cousins and brothers on the Sega Genesis and PS1 (along with WWF Warzone) are still some of my fondest memories of my life.

Brian Pillman WWF. The attitude era began when he showed up. That “attitude” energy among the other superstars like Austin, Hart, and Michaels all got ramped up around this time.

First reply nailed it.

I realized that the rise of the attitude era roughly coincides with the decline of grunge and the rise of nu metal, but these 2 developments do not seem causally related. I wonder what happened?

Yup. That's it. 100%.
Curtain Call, because it directly created this specific opportunity for Austin.
Vince was livid after the curtain call, but didn't want to punish Shawn since he was champ.
Razor and Diesel were leaving, so HHH got the brunt of it.
HHH was originally booked to win THAT King of the Ring.

The Attitude Era is generally accepted as having begun here:

While this and the NWO forming are generally considered the sparks that ignited the Era it really was a slow burn and took a long time to get the full burn rolling. (Early ‘98)

The Attitude Era itself starts when Vince says it starts, even though a bunch of the seeds were already planted.
