WSJ: Apple to increase iPhone screen size to 'at least' 4-inches

just think of the iphone 5 as a pair of tits!:p

In my mind the iPhone 4's size is the equivalent of a perfect C cup;

And Android phones with their 4.5'' screens are saggy bags of sand or comically inflated balloons.

Tits, Cigs & Beer. My work here is done :)

I quite like one of the concepts I've seen, here. Still isn't as hot as the 4, but it's not too far off. Thing is, that's just some artist guesswork.

Why would you go and compare the iPhone to Marantz and Breitling? They both make ugly-ass products. Give me a Casio any day of the week.
I was thinking specifically of build quality (although I shouldn't really cast aspersions on the build quality of Casio stuff).

You...you don't have to buy the new one, you know that right?
I don't immediately, no. I haven't bought a 4S yet. I play lots of iOS games though and I want the latest whizzbang effects when I do.

Besides, it's new man! New!

Hmmmmm. Maybe I ought to consider a change of phone, I hear that ICS update is pretty cool.........

Come October, we will be living in a world where you could get an iPhone 4 for free with a contract. Craziness. I wonder where we'll be technology-wise 10 years from now.

Interesting if true. I can't see a logical (ie. simple) resolution jump to be made, so unless they plan on making things more difficult for devs ... they're going to have to move the goal posts a bit as far as 'retina' goes.

iPhone 4's resolution actually has some wiggle room in that regard - it beats the target for 'retina' - but not by enough to make the jump to 4"

Bigger screen, further distance silly!

Retina™

Retina™
How very droll.

In all seriousness, Apple has been quite realistic in their distance reference numbers thus far. I'm curious to see if that will stand now that all their lines are moving to higher resolution. Wonder if they'll back away from the branding?

This thread:

Android fans: baha told you so. Let me wipe your tears apple fanboi. This legitimizes the galaxy note!

Apple fans: won't happen.

The smaller screen of the iPhone was the biggest draw of the iPhone for me personally. I even remember a time how I thought the thing was too huge. I fucking hate large electronic devices that are meant to be portable (as in: worn in your pockets).

Let's hope the iPhone still stays available in smaller screen size, so that the bigger=better trend in phones isn't truly cemented.

This rumor and the one about it's own mapping software have convinced me to wait till the announcement.

OG Evo user that was going to jump to the Galaxy III, but apple has finally piqued my curiosity.

users will strain their thumbs to reach the corners and naturally push the phone in a downward tilt, creating the perfect viewing arc and distance for Retina™.

just according to plan.

And because you have to hold it further away for the effect, it's better for your retina!

'My opinion is better than yours'

Apple fans seem to be worried that a larger screen won't fit into their hipster skinny jeans.

Just how tight are your pants that a marginally larger device won't fit into your pockets?

God I'm going to hate "discussing" that with everyone here. It'd be so much simpler to argue on GAF about this if Apple bumps the screen size, bumps the resolution to match it...and we can all argue about dev supporting the new res/old res for iPhone.

I personally think Apple's going to hold themselves to their own definition of Retina (at the viewing distance they originally quoted at the 4 release) or they'll explicitly say that it's Retina at some new distance instead, but the slightly larger screen would be held further from the face anyways justifying it.

I'm expecting them to be upfront about it, but it won't please GAF regardless.

Well, 3.5" was always way too small imo. 4" and we're getting somewhere. To be fair, phones like the One X or Galaxy S3 aren't too big at all imo. But I suppose a similar screen size with an even smaller bevel would be ideal.

I'm not worried about my pants, I'm worried about how the phone will feel in hand, and how well it can be operated with one hand.

They could bump the New iPhone's resolution to the old iPad's. it would have a 320 PPI display at 4''.

I have pretty small hands to be honest, and if I can handle even the larger android devices one handed pretty easily, I'd say most probably could. Having said that, in many ways I find the iPhone 4S more uncomfortable to use than say the Galaxy Nexus, because it's much more boxy and feels heavier (even though it barely is heavier) because of the much smaller surface area to spread the weight.

I'm not worried about my pants, I'm worried about how the phone will feel in hand, and how well it can be operated with one hand.

But you said you didn't care about the screen size yet those worries, especially the one about how well it can be operated with one hand, will be resolved in large part by the screen size...

I always said that 4 inches was the sweet spot, with 4.3 being the maximum in terms of comfort.
You did?

I've never understood what there even was to 'discuss' though. The only people that have had problems are those that don't understand what Apple actually claimed.

Something either is or isn't 'retina' by Apple's definition. Really the only arguing point is whether you agree with the distance measurement they assume. Granted a higher level discussion is whether you agree with their arcsecond valuation - but that's really a separate argument. It's a known quantity, so as long as they are meeting it their marketing is sound.

They've kind of put themselves in a corner, so yeah I think they'll be up front about it either way.

Wonder if they'll simply create two categories or something? Retina and High DPI? Actually achieving retina at all monitor sizes for their laptops and desktops seems problematic.

Wrong aspect ratio

What? How does a larger screen make it easier to use one handed? You're not making a lot of sense today.

Retina, or being unable to perceive pixels at the typical viewing distance you use the device is a worthy philosophy and I hope Apple sticks to it religiously --- and I think they will.

+1

Would love two versions, and if apple is smart that's what they'll do! One for the original fans of the iphone4 and one for big screen people. They could make a nice presentation out of it as well! Please everyone!

4" would be so great for reading.

Most importantly, it'll be so big for older adults who's vision is going. My parents have such a hard time with the 3.5" screen.

4.3" on my Lumia 900 is as big as I would want to go. 3.7-4", is my ideal phone size. 3.5" is too small. Some of the big cases people put on their iPhones will look pretty funny on a 4" iPhone.

I'm trying to make sense of your posts and failing badly :/

earlier:
I don't give a rats ass about the screen size. I'm worried about the overall size of the phone. I don't want to carry a monstrosity.

Sorry, I mean a Samsung Galaxy Monstrosity.

and now
I'm not worried about my pants, I'm worried about how the phone will feel in hand, and how well it can be operated with one hand.

I hope they're able to pull off something like this;

iphone_4in_4s_ciccarese_large.png

I'd be pretty shocked if they didn't. To be honest, thin bezels are a big thing mobile design at the moment. Cramming in as much as you can in without affecting size, battery or weight seem to be biggies.

EDIT: Didn't realise the aspect ratio changed. That does bring forward some new design contraints. Be interesting to see how they deal with it. Go widescreen or keep a design with lots of redundant space lol.

I hope not, it'd ruin the aspect ratio.

I don't want widescreen aspect ratios on my mobile devices.

So just out of curiosity, what would you prefer then, a phone with more redundant physical space (instead of screen real estate) or a more square like (or less rectangular length wise) design?

Obviously they could shave off a bit of the bezel on the sides or (ugh) add a millimeter or two to the phone's width. The mockup is more about illustrating the possibility of a bigger screen while keeping the device as small as the existing iPhones.

The latter.

I think it might be less comfortable to use as a phone and one handed with that sort of shape though. When using devices one handed, the pinky finger and the index finger tend to be quite far apart. Already longer than the length of the current 4S in most cases. But who knows.
