I think that is a survival horror game for kids... I saw my nephew playing it, it looked terrible, so I bought for her Resident Evil Revelations 2 and thankfully she realized what is a real game.

And that's how a new Resident Evil fan was born.

Sorry for the laugh emoji reaction but I feel exactly the same. Seen the name floating around but never quite understood what it's about.

I know we are all shitting on it BUT

The first one I think is legitimately good. It's a simple game with only jumpscares. Check cameras, lock doors, manage power, done die. But it keeps you just busy enough that the jumpscares actually work and can still scare you.

The series blew up and became something annoying however.

Five Nights at Freddy's. A game my son was into years ago.

According to the BBC, this film is some kind of cultural event.

One person who's witnessed the excitement first-hand is horror fan Ash Millman.

"I went to the cinema the other day to watch a horror movie and a little trailer mention for Five Nights at Freddy's got people whooping and cheering," she says.

But why are people so invested in this movie?
To understand the hype, you need to understand a bit about the history of the video game.

Also, apparently it has deep and complected lore?!

Ash says it's almost "impossible" to piece it all together, but some fans put a lot of time and effort into decoding it.

"The lore is all over the place," she says.
"It's super-complicated, and super hard to find, but so rewarding when you do manage to get there."

I bought the game and played it for about 10-15 minutes. I was over it super quick. I get why it became popular, but I don't get why it's still popular. Maybe it's because family arcade pizza buffets are still a thing. Their games might suck (on rails shooters, racing games, and ticket games), but kids love whatever they can play.

Basically a big video game horror franchise that amassed a huge fanbase thanks to slow-dripping it's complex lore in cryptic ways over it's course. Now a record breaking horror film (pretty decent for what it is. Matthew Lillard is great)

Yeah it's a big cultural phenomenon.

It's more or less the horror version of Myst. There isn't much gameplay beyond just hitting a few switches and figuring out some patterns. And like Myst it was created by one dev and released at the right time to be a cultural phenomenon.

The game or the movie?

The game is fun. You are a security guard holed up in an office in a Chucky Cheeses (Fazbear Pizza) where demonic possessed animatronics wander at night and slowly make their way to your office to do terrible things to your body. Basically you have to survive the night until 6am. You have a limited range of options to monitor and protect yourself from the animatronics. You have your trusty security monitors to monitor their whereabouts, light switches at either door exiting your office which light up the hallway (hallways are pitch black on either side, so unable to see animatronics till you turn the lights on, which flicker). You also have security doors on either side of your office. Turning lights on and shutting doors (even using the cameras) all consume battery power so you have to be wise and use them sparingly as you won't last the night just leaving your doors down or spamming the lights too often. Once the battery goes out, you are pretty much fucked, Freddy will come out and jump scare you. As more nights pass, the animatronics get more bold and aggressive as they make their way to the office which makes battery management a real killer when you have animatronics showing up at both sides of your office at once.

Each mobile FNAF game and its sequel is kind of a variation of this formula.

The movie:
Well, I wouldn't really say it was scary but lots of nice lore drops. I doubt the movie will be popular for people not familiar with FNAF, but people who played the games or are a fan should appreciate it. I thought the movie was worth seeing at least once, as a person who enjoyed the games.

My observation is that it is a terrible series of games, but entertaining to watch others' play. The popularity is strictly driven by streamers.
