Man Plans To Drop Absorbent Material Into Storm

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A South Florida businessman says he's going to try to reduce the strength of Hurricane Ivan by flying a Boeing 747 into the edge of the hurricane and dumping thousands of pounds of an absorbent material into the storm.

Peter Cordani, of Jupiter, plans to try to knock the storm down by one or two categories by dropping tons of powder that absorbs 3,000 to 4,000 times its weight.

Cordani is chief operating officer of Dyn-O-Mat, a company that sells environmental absorbent products such as mats for mechanics. He believes his product, SK1000, would cause a shearing action and a 15-degree cooling of the storm.

Cordani has been working on his plan for five years. He has assembled a team of experts, including two former astronauts, moonwalker Edgar Mitchell and Scott Mac Leod, who tested the lunar module.

Cordani is in contract talks to lease a 747 tanker from Evergreen Aviation in McMinnville, Ore.

Sounds like a hokey and flagrant publicity stunt. Nobody is going to lease this guy a plane when he tells them that he plans to fly it into a hurricane...

There are many planes that can fly through a hurricane. I'm not sure if one carrying however many tonnes of cargo is a good idea but it's not really that absurd at all.

They've done it before:

Chemical Absorbs Moisture, Company Officials Say
JUPITER, Fla. -- A Florida company claims that it has created a chemical capable of diluting the power of a hurricane.

The company completed its first successful test of the product Thursday on a storm cloud 10 miles off the coast of Jupiter, Fla.

The company dropped 9,000 pounds of the chemical called "Dyn-O-Gel" into the cloud.

The granules absorbed the cloud's moisture and then fell back into the ocean as what company officials say is a harmless gel.

Within seconds, the cloud dissipated and disappeared from radar, company officials say.

"It did change the radar," Dyn-O-Mat CEO Peter Cordani said. It did do some movement on it, and that is exactly what we were looking for. Our point is proven."

Company officials say that they will now work to get federal funding for the next test, which will be on a tropical depression.

Im no environmentalist... but can we really be just dropping 9000 pounds of gel all over the place?

Hell, my grandfather used to fly into hurricanes for observation. Its really fucked up if you think about it, but he seemed to do alright.
