I fail to see where I was "giving someone shit", especially in regards to the value that Gold gives you.
Nothing has changed. The content you get with Gold is still the same content you got with Gold years ago. If you're suddenly going to cancel your sub because of a series if free games that only came into play literally years after you started paying for your Gold sub, then you're not exactly the sharpest of tools.
Saying that Gold is a "rip off" is fine on its own. Saying that the extras that you got years after subscribing when you were willingly paying for less is a silly excuse.
That's nice.
I paid for Gold back in 2003 because it offered something that was unique at the time, a centralized online multiplayer and voice chat. I had one friends list across all games, I could send messages and voice chat with them, and play online multiplayer with them. It was something worth paying for because the games were great and the friends I made through the service were worth keeping. Then the online games got got bad, Halo being a prime example.
Microsoft added features and put them behind the Gold paywall as an added value, even though I payed for Gold to play and chat in online games with friends, not to to Twitter or Facebook. Steam caught up, and fast, but I was still tied into the legacy of XBL Gold, and couldn't afford a gaming PC. Kinect comes out, games stay bad, service doesn't get any better, Original Xbox Live is shut down for no real reason, price goes up to 60 bucks because CoD or whatever the reason. Flagship titles are still peer to peer (beside Gears 3), the thought of, "what the fuck am I paying for" creeps in. PS+ starts becoming amazing with free games and huge discounts, Steam becomes amazing with unbelievable sales and unmatched functionality. I keep paying for Gold because my friends are there and there are a couple good games to play online.
Now that next gen is finally approaching and I finally built a gaming PC, XBL Gold seems like a joke. I spent 30 bucks during the Steam Summer Sale on games that I have wanted to play for years, the Xbox equivalent of that cost would be 100+ dollars. Flagship XBL titles like Halo and Forza still have peer to peer multiplayer, Halo is terrible and getting worse.
Why would I pay for more XBL Gold when it is as bad or worse then it was years ago. Why would I give shit to ppl for finally bowing out of XBL and their mediocre to bad first party exclusives. MS paywalls "features" that are free on PC and other consoles, and advertises them as added value to a Gold subscription.
Congrats to MS for making old as fuck games and XBLA titles free. They are scared to make Halo 3 free because it would probably surpass Halo 4 in the XBL charts. It's a stop gap and desperate reaction to the competition. Microsoft would have loved to continue the status quo, but the competition offered better options and better deals. XBL is desperately trying to compete, but still scared to actually go for it and offer newer and high profile games for free.
