XBL: Games with Gold

I fail to see where I was "giving someone shit", especially in regards to the value that Gold gives you.

Nothing has changed. The content you get with Gold is still the same content you got with Gold years ago. If you're suddenly going to cancel your sub because of a series if free games that only came into play literally years after you started paying for your Gold sub, then you're not exactly the sharpest of tools.

Saying that Gold is a "rip off" is fine on its own. Saying that the extras that you got years after subscribing when you were willingly paying for less is a silly excuse.

That's nice.

I paid for Gold back in 2003 because it offered something that was unique at the time, a centralized online multiplayer and voice chat. I had one friends list across all games, I could send messages and voice chat with them, and play online multiplayer with them. It was something worth paying for because the games were great and the friends I made through the service were worth keeping. Then the online games got got bad, Halo being a prime example.

Microsoft added features and put them behind the Gold paywall as an added value, even though I payed for Gold to play and chat in online games with friends, not to to Twitter or Facebook. Steam caught up, and fast, but I was still tied into the legacy of XBL Gold, and couldn't afford a gaming PC. Kinect comes out, games stay bad, service doesn't get any better, Original Xbox Live is shut down for no real reason, price goes up to 60 bucks because CoD or whatever the reason. Flagship titles are still peer to peer (beside Gears 3), the thought of, "what the fuck am I paying for" creeps in. PS+ starts becoming amazing with free games and huge discounts, Steam becomes amazing with unbelievable sales and unmatched functionality. I keep paying for Gold because my friends are there and there are a couple good games to play online.

Now that next gen is finally approaching and I finally built a gaming PC, XBL Gold seems like a joke. I spent 30 bucks during the Steam Summer Sale on games that I have wanted to play for years, the Xbox equivalent of that cost would be 100+ dollars. Flagship XBL titles like Halo and Forza still have peer to peer multiplayer, Halo is terrible and getting worse.

Why would I pay for more XBL Gold when it is as bad or worse then it was years ago. Why would I give shit to ppl for finally bowing out of XBL and their mediocre to bad first party exclusives. MS paywalls "features" that are free on PC and other consoles, and advertises them as added value to a Gold subscription.

Congrats to MS for making old as fuck games and XBLA titles free. They are scared to make Halo 3 free because it would probably surpass Halo 4 in the XBL charts. It's a stop gap and desperate reaction to the competition. Microsoft would have loved to continue the status quo, but the competition offered better options and better deals. XBL is desperately trying to compete, but still scared to actually go for it and offer newer and high profile games for free.

Could have been saving money for a gaming PC instead of paying $30-60 a year for Xbox Live Gold?
What?
The 360 has been out for 8 years now. So you could have saved a max of $480 over those 8 years. So close. Only 8 or 9 years more and you will have enough for a budget gaming PC.
:)

I can't be the only person excited that Magic is the free game. I have always wanted to play one of the Magic games but just never took the step and bought one of them.
Good stuff.

The Console and games are free with a purchase of XBL Gold, math pls.

What the what?

480 bucks for XBL gold, plus the cost of the Console (I paid 600, first Xbox 360 broke), plus the cost of overpriced games. Gaming PC is closer to that total price, not just the price of XBL Gold. Online gaming on a PC is free.

Can't say I'm excited for Magic the Gathering, but a free game is a free game. I am looking forward to Rainbow Six Vegas though. I really hope this program continues into the new year. Microsoft is really awesome for doing this.

I honestly am enjoying the free games I just wish they'd include something more recent. All the games they've put out that have had physical releases I can now pick up for a couple dollars at the most. Like, I get free is free but would it kill them to give away some newer stuff? Or I'd settle for the Batman games, I haven't played them yet and you'd think with Origins coming out WB would be willing to make some kind of trade off for the sales and all that. But who am I to say what should and shouldn't happen.

I don't understand this argument. You would have either skipped gaming for 8 years or would have bought a pc 8-9 years ago and have replaced or repaired it at least once or most likely several times.

I don't mind getting magic. It is better than nothing. I wonder if the age of the titles has to do with the fact you keep the game and don't have to have gold to play them. I don't know how Sony makes money on plus with all the free games they offer.

I hope Microsoft continues this program on Xbox One.

Anyone know if this Magic game actually has a tutorial or single player aspect so I can learn it.

All I know about it comes from thread necromancer memes and seeing geeks play it at the comic book store I used to go to.

Eight years of PC gaming ran you at least 2500 on just the hardware, and you weren't maxing anything out at any point.

Software pricing is better, but cost effectiveness is not on the PC's side.

Yeah I don't understand your argument at all. So you are saying that your purchase of your 360 and Live through the years you had it and the games you played were all regretful purchases? That's sad that you can be so upset over such a large group of purchases man.
You can be mad about whatever you want to though. I'm cool with it. Hope you find gaming happiness somewhere.

I'm gonna go play some Magic.

The magic games do have pretty decent tutorials. I have only played the demo but after a couple runs through the tutorial in that I felt I knew what was going on. I was just waiting for a sale for this game.
I will take free though. I like free.

If the games aren't rentals, then it technically beats Plus. Because you know, you're not renting the games, you actually own them.

Nope, it doesn't even come close to PS+. It's clear that PS+ is much better. Just take a look at what games have been released so far on PS+.

Some argue that the negative aspect of PS+ is that you can't keep the game once you unsubscribe from the service. However, common sense will show that if you're allowed to own the games you download through PS+, this will be easily abused as Sony offers short term subscriptions. Free games through PS+ has existed since Sony introduced the service. While Microsoft will offer their version of the program for only a short period of time.

Furthermore, the discounts offered through PS+ are insane. Most recently, some of the notable games listed on Japanese PS+ sale offered MGSHD Collection for $15 and UMvC for $10.

I was excited with my XB1 preorder but this time I feel insulted. Sure, making the agreements for GWG should be more difficult to MS than is for PS+ with Sony because are not rentals and Live has more suscribers, so publishers have higher opportunity costs; but it seems they are not even trying. I was expecting the deal to become better each month but it seems that is not the case. I also expect MS to improve their service along the next gen because Sony is going ahead but I am still worried about the capabilities of the mangement to stand strong in an adverse scenario but how poorly this deal is being implemented just reinforces my doubts about the management and make me wonder if they could actually push competition forward next gen.
I never complaint about paying for Gold because I always felt xbox superior over PS3 but this time they addresed most PS3 troubles and I'm sure the management is capable enough to not make dumb mistakes again. Its making me doubt about if I want to keep playing on xbox next gen.

take the cost out of XBox buying games then you also take the cost out of buying PC games.

so either way no ones playing shit.

You get the same deals with gold. And with points cards you save even more.

How do you save more with point cards? Deals only really happened during Black Friday with them and now they are gone.

I can still buy 4200 points on ebay for 35€. the points will be converted to 50€. that saves another 30% off everything

too bad the points will be gone soon

This pretty much is how I feel with Xbox gold now.. Now that the PS4 is coming out, I might as well get that with PS+..

Xbl actually offers some pretty good deals as well, and only a few are behind a paywall

Exactly, sales on XBL are really good for the last year or so.

About the games of course they are disappointing especially after the decent games of last month, I'd expect a more diverse line-up from MS...why not offer some more niche titles? as Miles already said going the "you keep the game" route was probably the wrong decision, that being said I haven't played a Magic before so I'll definitely download it and give it a try.

MS doesn't have the same license DRM in place that Sony has, so there was no other option really.

Just like the free-ish game offers, that differs between regions. European PS+ discounts rarely come anywhere close to matching Plus's monthly ransom fee and the sales in general are usually far worse.

Thanks for clarifying, I didn't know that the DRM was the cause for this approach.

Still after the very good Dead Rising 2+Case Zero offer Magic+New Vegas should've been the games for the first half of the month, what I mean is that even with older titles they could get a better reaction from the XBL userbase.

Some times I swear the Xbox team with what they're doing (especially in some sales and now with Games with Gold) they seem like totally out of touch with what people want, it looks like one time they get it and the next time they fuck it up.

Yeah, Magic 2013 is really good (especially for people new to the game). It's just the best example yet of Microsoft showing how they're trying to do absolutely as little for the consumer as they possibly think they can get away with

That's nice.

Gold has a competitor now in PS+, and MS response thus far has been anemic. The fact that people who paid for gold before without an issue and now are going "This isn't a good value" should be raising some red flags. It really does seem like MS' management is out of touch. They're acting like Sony was in 2007.

I don't think this is an honest or thoughtful reflection on peoples' reactions.

Im stoked to have free games but I do think this is a very interesting insight into how 'generous' Microsoft are likely to be and as 'added value' to Xbox gold its pretty poor.

If this is indicative of how poorly the Microsoft deals are I really do think PS+ offers better value for money. I would say that whether MS offered free games or not. I say that as someone who has had Gold for the last 5 or 6 years and don't own a Playstation 3.

I was quite happy to pay for Gold while the multiplayer exclusives still interested me because quite frankly I had to pay to play Halo online and couldn't escape that fact so just did it. Now that Halo is not so great and neither is Gears or any other exclusive I am very tempted to switch to Playstation... if the exclusives are better. For me this had nothing to do with the quality of PS+ or Gold but more with just the games.

I don't think they're out of touch. They're late, probably, but they're obviously testing the water with that program. There's no reason to expect any reaction from MS right now when they probably already planned the whole lineup until december, and will draw their conclusions based on the downloads of all the different games they offered.

See all of it as an experiment to plan their future deals with Xboxlive, not as a new policy, since we knew from the beginning that it was temporary.

The confirm purchase page for Magic keeps telling me i have no valid payment options and the only thing I can do is add a credit card.

I thought you could just select to use microsoft points?

Microsoft points are a thing of the past. You don't have them anymore. Buy it on your console, the only way to buy on xbox.com right now is with a credit card or paypal linked to your account.

Dropping a truth bomb on this post: No one cares if you don't resub - especially after you've been subbed for several years without receiving any free games whatsoever and had no problem with it. Don't let the door hit you on the way out

Lol Here's a "truth bomb" simple Jack: its called "competition". I suggest you look up the definition. Xbox Live used to be a good value proposition. It no longer is compared to PS+ given the rather obvious disparity in quality between games offered via each service. This is about as close to objective fact as one can get. The game has changed. MS needs to step it up but so far Games With Gold has been a fail.

Oh, and one other little correction to your inciteful post: I dont give a rats ass that fan boys like yourself can't admit truth. But I guarantee that MS DOES in fact "care" if enough people bail on Live in favor of PS+ - which judging by how things are shaping up so far in the next gen race - looks pretty likely.

Way to miss the point though. :)~

Is there a way to redeem the games without a card on your account - I'm travelling around with work so no doubt will hit a point where I'm redeeming through my phone so I can play those games after they stop being free

I'm pretty sure paypal can be added as a payment option.

I wonder if MS could offer better and newer games if they were just rentals that stopped working when your Live subscription did.

I would happily make that trade off.

Magic 2013 is actually really fun, but I would have preferred Yu-Gi-Oh! Decade Duels Plus.

Unlocking 30 cards for each deck is going to take a while.

I played the tutorial for magic and was overdone by the urge to stab my eyeballs out and light myself on fire rather than keep playing. I think I went in expecting something totally different or at least more of a graphic representation. It took everything I had not to just delete it on principle.
What do you think are the chances we get something like shadow complex?

So essentially if Microsoft offered their own version of PS+?

To be honest, I like the system Microsoft has going for it more than Plus, but the games they're putting out just aren't enough despite being able to keep the games forever. I'm not sure what they're thinking, but if this is supposed to be their answer to PS+, it's pathetic.

A PS+ system would be great, IMO. Would be a much better incentive.

Really MS, Rainbow Six Vegas? A game from 2006? Thanks! They couldn't even offer RSV2. The only game I've downloaded so far was Dead Rising 2 and Case Zero. Played Case Zero and Dead Rising 2 couldn't interest me.

So far, I've been very disappointed. This whole shebang was to thank people for paying for Gold right?

This whole shebang was to thank people for paying for Gold right?
Desperation at people grumbling and comparing Gold to PS+, which has a runaway track record of giving people really nice and newer games for free.

So far their execution of this idea has been completely off the mark. They might just as well give people Blazing Angels or The Outfit or FIFA 2006 next.

Games for Gold is a retarded joke.

No kidding. If they honestly thought of putting up a challenge with these games against PS+ then they're even more stupid then I thought.

I wonder what the next 2 games are. Maybe something from 2008?

Top Bottom
