XBL: Games with Gold

rather own the games, improve the games, but make it so I can play offline.

The whole "ownership" point is such a trivial point, particularly for downloadable titles. It's not like you can trade it in, and if the service is so awesome you don't see yourself unsubscribing, you essentially "own it" indefinitely anyway. I'd prefer something more like PS Plus if it meant more and better titles.

They probably decided to wait for E3. Hope they revamp how the program works too. Make it more similar to PS+.

That's why maybe, it takes much more time to implement. I don't know if they have to talk other partners in, like publishers. How are the publishers repaid when we download their games for free? By download or is a lump sum paid by MS?

I don't know about Xbox but for Sony it's by download.

i feel the same way. im going on 7 years now as an XBL subscriber, so if MS had a similar program dating back that far the whole ownership argument wouldn't really matter to me because I was invested in the service for so long, giving me plenty of time to play the games and move on.

if your looking to get into PS+ as a short term subscriber then it sounds like the service isn't for you.

Thanks for the reply. Seeing how popular PS+ has become, Sony must lose money though. Because with 50$/year, even if they don't pay retail price per copy downloaded, that doesn't cover a game per month.

publishers get very little money per download on these games, they probably get better rates, if not full, on the dlc for the games etc tho

This isn't a bad thing if it's a good XBLA game.

Wonder what it could be though, they'd want it to be strong/appealing. (I'd hope)

State of Decay? Banjo Kazooie/Tooie? Shadow Complex? I'm hoping it's something obscure like Snoopy Flying Aces. That game could do with a online MP revival...

It was almost guaranteed that there'd be a GoD and an XBLA game, the XBLA game being first doesn't really narrow anything down whatsoever.

I really wouldn't sit around hoping for State of Decay though, doesn't that game still actually sell? They probably won't be giving Minecraft away either, FYI.

The amount of complaining if it was Snoopy flying aces would be insane. even if the game is great, people would scream so very much...

I'm hoping for Battle block theatre, been looking at getting that game for a while...

I'll never understand this. A good game will always remain a good game. I don't see why anyone would be up in arms over MS giving a good game. So what if it's a few years old? I still play PS1 games on my Vita and I love every second of it...

Sigh.

People don't want good though, they want recent - well the majority do anyway and unfortunately thats how MS will play it I guess.

Its a shame but there we go. They need to put Gears 3 on it, the game still has a dedicated community but it would be bigger if they put it on GwG

New gets us garbage like Hitman Absolution and Deadlight. I really don't understand why anyone would want those over games like Snoopy or Banjo Kazooie or Perfect Dark (XBLA)

I think if they did put another Gears on GwG, it'll probably be Judgement. 3 would be nice though, my copy doesn't work any more. Kept getting disc read errors...

They are moving arcade games to the first of the month because they want to have GOD/XB1 games for the 15th, maybe?

Oh I agree completely. I think the amount of complaints against MS about GWG has been ridiculous. People complaining that the games they are receiving for free are old is just silly.

I've seen people say they'd rather MS didn't bother with GWG that dare to give them a game as old as Rainbow Six Vegas. Even though it's bloody great game.

You make a good point sir

Another good point would be that by letting us keep the games Microsoft doesn't give us incentive to keep subscribing. If we haven't finished two or three of the games, we can just cancel and be done with it. With Sony we have to subscribe to access the content, so that wouldn't be an option.

Like I said earlier in this thread, I think something that could really set the GwG service apart from PS+ is instead offering users a choice of games each month. For example, for the first month of the service on XB1, I could see it being a huge hit if they offered a choice of either Forza 5 or Ryse. Definitely a differentiator and it doesn't seem that it would be that difficult to implement.

Personally, I've gotten very little out of Games with Gold or PS+ because I've already owned easily 90% of what's being given away that I'd have any interest in. In Games with Gold's case, it's because I bought a ton of 360 stuff in the early to mid generation. In PS+'s case, it's largely because I buy things on Steam and PC games get deep discounts and bundles all the time. I definitely prefer the ownership model to the keep-subscribing model, but for me both of them have been pretty underwhelming in terms of cash value. I renewed my Gold subscription last year for $40 specifically for GwG and discounts and I am certain I have not gotten $40 out of it. Which is fine, for a lot of people the online is worth it and the GwG is more worth it and whatever, I'm not going to pretend the whole earth should revolve around me. I just mean that personally I'm not likely to renew as a result.

In order for GwG
Fable III: Bought it day one for full price
Defense Grid: Got gifted it on PC on Nov 29, 2010; the person who gifted it to me paid about a dollar at the time
Assassin's Creed II: Paid negative money at it for launch (bought regular edition for $29.99 at a launch promotion, traded it for $37 a month later, used trade credit to get deluxe edition for free, kept game and sold the tin and action figure)
Crackdown: Bought in mid-2007, didn't record price
Dead Rising 2: No interest
Dead Rising 2 Case Zero: Bought Mar 2013 when it was on sale + had discounted MSP, so spent ~$2
MtG 2013: No interest
Rainbow Six Vegas: Thought I actually got this for free, but apparently bought it on Steam in 2011 for $3
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes: GwG! Yay!
Halo 3: Got given it as a gift in 2007 when I got a 360.
A World of Keflings: Fiancée bought it day one
Iron Brigade: Bought it the first time it went on sale, using discounted or free points, so maybe paid $5
Gears of War: Played it on a friend's copy before I owned an Xbox 360.
Shoot Many Robots: Terrible, didn't even bother downloading it for free
Sleeping Dogs: Got given it as a gift last year
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light: Paid 7.50 in March 2013, using discounted points so paid less
Dead Island: Paid $3.75 on PC in May 2013
Toy Soldiers: Cold War: No interest because I haven't played Toy Soldiers 1, which I got for free on XBLA and also for free on Steam
CivRev: Bought for ~$20 on 360 in July 2008, also bought for $15 or so on DS in August 2008, and bought for a buck or two on iOS in 2009-2010
Dungeon Defenders: Terrible, but I also got it for a few cents in a bundle at some point on PC with all DLC
Hitman Absolution: Paid <$5 on a GoD sale last year
Deadlight: Bought day one.

Like I said, I haven't had better luck with PS+ so this isn't a critique, just a note that there probably exist others like me for whom these programs don't really work.

Yeah I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to the value of these services. Last gen has passed and I don't feel like there's anything I've missed. Because of that the games offered are unappealing since I've either already played them or I don't want to play them.

I look forward more to when GwG comes to X1. I don't want to buy for example powerstar golf but I'd play it if it was free.

This is exactly the same situation.

Yay, a great game that more people will get to play!

Hopefully, Noggy got something nice for this deal, too. :)

Of course I have the game already, but I'm as happy to see smaller devs get something out of these offers, as I am getting a freebie game personally. Easily among the top tier of what's been offered so far, as well.

Have heard good things about Dust, but is it a Metroidvania? Remembering gameplay of it reminds me of that, but I just want to be sure.

Not to me. I unsubscribed from gold and PS+ regularly so games with gold is the far better service for me.

Dust, nice. I already watched the whole game on YouTube, but the combat system is excellent.

Lots of fur though, so it may be a bit controversial.

Dust is brilliant - beautiful looking, great sounding, fun combat and progression, but also, brilliant thematically - I loved it. Enjoy!

Bastion's as bad as DeadLight, shut up!

(Okay it's not really anything like that bad, but it's so far below Dust in quality that it's barely comparable.)

I suppose....those 3 games though.. its like comparing apples and pears. Its like trying to find similaritys between Halo and Civ5

Damn, I read Dust and was happy because I thought Dust was the game were you were a god and controlled earth to make your humans reach a portal and protect them from water and lava on the way and stuff.

Pretty dissapointed that its a sidescroller.
