I think its obvious why the name was chosen.

XBox 2 sounds like a step behind the Playstation 3.

But Xenon is just too weird, and besides MS has already built some brand recoginition with the name XBox anyway.

They couldn't use XBox 3 obviously, so XBox "360" is what they came up with. 360 is kind of an "extreme" term, lol, they probably figured it would appeal to teens and because its "360" it matches up with "Playstation 3".

After investing,err loosing billions on their brand I can see why they kept it simple yet weird=Xbox 360. The public now knows what the hell an Xbox is,its a household name like Nintendo and PlayStation are nowdays. You don't throw that away with some new name. You don't fix what isn't broken. But yeah,Xbox 360 is kinda weird,but then if its successful then the name will be an afterthought since the market cares more about the *what have you done for me lately* mentality over some simple name on a console.

there's no point in even discussing console names. they quickly become transparent. i had conniptions over "dreamcast," which is about as stupid and meaningless as brand names get. but very soon "dreamcast" suggested that particular console and nothing else, and i couldn't object to it now if i tried. microsoft can call the new xbox whatever stupid thing they like. "xbox" is a stupid name. "super nintendo entertainment system" is an extremely stupid name.

They should just have gone along with Halo's tagine and called it Xbox Evo, as in Xbox Evolved, XE for short. Then they could have steered back on the numbered naming path later on with Evo II, Evo III Evo IV, since the "Evolution" preceeding the number would imply evolved hardware, wich isn't necessarely "older" than the current, higher numbered playstation.
