XBox 360 custom soundtrack woes

Minotauro

Finds Purchase on Dog Nutz
Let me preface this by saying that I love the concept of custom soundtracks on the 360. Their attempt at a standardized system between games is a fantastic idea and long overdue in my opinion. That said, I have some quibbles about it's implementation. Let me also specify that my thoughts are all based upon my experiences using a 3rd gen iPod with an official Apple USB2 adapter in PGR3.

My first complaint has to do with shuffling and playlists. Before getting my 360, I created a playlist on my iPod specifically for racing games. I was able to come up with about 150 songs or so. When I first tried using it though, I got a message from the 360 saying there were too many songs and it would select the first 100. Fine, that's not that big of a deal. I then went through an eliminated enough songs until it would take the whole selection (this ended up being 99 songs). Now, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it shuffle the playlist. Sometimes, it will actually do it on its own automatically. Usually, though, it will just play through all the songs alphabetically. I've looked through all the settings on the 360 to find such an option to no avail. Has anyone else had any luck?

My second complaint has to do with how the 360 deals with power when it comes to third party music devices. To put it plainly, it doesn't. There is no power supplied to the device at all. So, if it runs out of power during play, that's it. You're done and you have to recharge. As a bonus, I think the system even locks up if the device runs out of power while you're playing something. My iPod has only run out once but when it did, PGR3 locked up completely. I had to do a hard reset of the system. At the same time, my iPod stays on when I turn the system off. So, unless I remember to get out of my chair, walk to the 360, and manually turn the device off, it will continue to stay on until the battery runs out. This isn't that big of a deal but it does sorta negate the benefits of being able to turn off the console with the controller.

Aside from these problems, I do have to say that I enjoy the 360's custom soundtrack options. Being able to spontaneously open the Xbox Guide and quickly navigate to my music is intuitive The aforementioned complaints to somewhat sour the experience though. I'm hoping it will be possible to correct them through future Live updates but I'm not sure how realistic that is.

that's weird. i have an ipod mini hooked up to my xbox 360 and it has never failed to stay charged. i'm talking hours and hours of gaming. try plugging it into different usb ports, and see if your results change.

That's honestly terrible to read. I would have liked to get an iPod when I graduated to plug into a 360, but not if it's going to be handled like this. Looks like the best way to get a lot of music in the hands of my 360 is to buy a basic Windows box and load it up with every song I have for Media Connect.

...Media Connect is effective for the 360 through a router and Ethernet for all devices, right?

Yeah, I want randomized soundtracks too. But at least the system plays what you tell it to play, and sorts well.

The up/down arrow button (on the media controls) is random play. When its highlited it will play randomly, but the playlist itself wont be shuffled.

probably because you cant charge a 3rd gen ipod through USB IIRC. only tranfer data

Ah, that makes sense. I generally use firewire exclusively so I didn't know that was the case. Thanks for the info.

I have a 5G Ipod Video and I have none of those problems at all. The system charges my Ipod while I play / listen to music from it.

The only problem I have with it is when I am playing either PDZ or PGR3 and go into the music menu to select my Ipod, the USB reader takes like a minute to reconize my Ipod every single time I do it. When on the dashboard it doesn't even take 5 seconds. Very weird.

Seriously? That's great to hear. I tried clicking it once but there was no indication one way or the other what it did. Maybe I should've cracked the 360 instruction manual. ;)

Hm, it must be the fact that mine if a 3G then. Well, it looks like neither of my two original complaints are valid. I take it back, the 360 custom soundtrack options are [near] perfect!

Yeah, I've noticed that too. It kinda sucks when you wanna change playlists.

Yeah, that's my only complaint really. That it takes about 15 seconds to scan the iPod.

I was wondering if they could do this just the first time it's plugged in, and perhaps save the iPod database file (iTunes Library.xml or whatever) to the hard drive or something, so it doesn't have to scan it each time. Hopefully they implement something like that in an update.

For anyone else with a Dell DJ gen 2 I just found out that you have to install the PlayForSure firmware in order for the 360 to recognize it.

Be warned that doing so will wipe out everything on your DJ tho.

Yeah, that took me awhile to figure out too, hehe

Most of my ipod music was ripped from CDs in iTunes. Now it's my understanding that I can't stream this music on the 360 because it isn't actually in mp3 format. What's the best way to convert all this iTunes music into mp3s or another format that can be streamed on the 360?

So far the only game that I would be tempted to use the streaming music on is PGR3, but the game's soundtrack is already pretty kickass, so not using the ipod isn't a major issue yet. But I'd like to know for the future how this could be done.

Am I making any sense?

Do you use a Mac or a PC? This site I'm pretty sure had an Applescript to convert your tracks from AAC to MP3, but you'd need a Mac to do it obviously. http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/

You are better off using your iPod if you have one though. Converting a compressed format to another compressed format isn't that great of an idea.

1. You can set iTunes to convert CDs in Mp3 or other formats in the prefs.

2. Can somebody confirm this: an AAC codec to play Apple's music format is available via the Live Marketplace to download to the system?

aac format yes.... HOWEVER it's unprotected aac

is there any way to have it always play music? every time I watch a trailer or something I have to go back through the media blade to start music again

Just got my 360 yesterday and was having the same probelm with my 3rd gen's battery draining fast.

I found the solution with one of these.

Plug it into your 3G, plug the Firewire end into the power adater and USB end into the 360. Viola, music + power.

Is it possible for me to burn a bunch of songs onto a DVD-R and copy them onto the Xbox 360 HD, or do you have to use a CDR and create a music CD instead of a data CD/DVD?

I just share my music from the "My Music" folder on my PC, and it works fine, but it's annoying that you can't save a custom playlist unless it's on the Xbox 360 HD.

BTW, anyone else experience a music glitch in Ridge Racer 6, where if you use your own songs, then switch back, the game music will not play until you reset the system?

Yeah, this totally fucking sucks.

But at least I can just stream the music over my network. :)

Crappers, I have a PC.

Thanks for the help. I guess I'll just rip everything in MP3 format from now on.

Single greatest reason I use MP3 format. It's the defacto standard of compressed digital music.

You cannot copy songs from your DVD-R, you can only rip from audio CDs.
