Xbox 360 Killer App?

What is the game that will make you hand over $300 for the Xbox360... I played all the games at E3 and was not blown away. I am not seeing a game that will ummm make me upgrade to Xbox360. I will wait to see what Nintendo and Sony show playable at E3 2006.

So does anyone think there is a Killer App ready for Xbox360 launch in November?

Still waitin' on PD0.

But it's looking like I definitely wont get one this year. Put the $120 that I turned into $437 on 12 games, and I still have to pay off 6 more or so.

For me it is Tiger Woods 2006 and NBA2K6...

I don't like first-person shooters... maybe a racing to show off the system graphics...

I feel that the jump in graphics warrants buying the new sports games only on X-Box 360, I will not be buying any new sports games on X-Box.

Wait wait...people are buying 360 to play games? ;)

But uh...there's nothing I really *need*...but I'll probably end up with a racing game (PGR3 or RR6) and PD0.

Xbox360 has no killer-app for me yet...maybe after the X05 announcements in Leipzig there will be something more.

pgr3, definitely

pd0 should turn out pretty good too (fingers crossed)

IMO none of the launch or launch window games scream "buy me, buy me, buy me".

I think the first real killer app will be Gears of War.

I was initially going to pass it up, but I might bite the bullet, I don't know. There isn't a killer app per se (if there was a Crimson Skies sequel being shown off, my money would be right on the table, absolutely ate up what High Road to Revenge had to offer and can't wait to see the landscapes and battles with next gen capacities), but there are some nice titles that I might have some fun with.

For launch window, there's Elder Scrolls 4 and Kameo (I owe it to a friend to pick this one up, he did some work for it). DOA4 looks pretty good, and I'm curious to see if the mutterings about Soul Calibur 3 being released for the Xbox 360 end up true. I'm also thinking about FFXI, since I'd be able to lug my 360 over to my sister's place and leech off her broadband, whereas on my home PC, I'm stuck at half the speed of 56k.

So there isn't really a killer app, per se, but the selection of titles looks decent enough.

Biggest thing I'm pumped for is it's full media center abilities. I have a spare PC I'm installining XP Media Center on, and I will watch TV through my 360. Should be cool.

I was exicted by Madden 360 untile I saw the recent videos... looks so Xbox 1.5 and if EA was going to ship this fall why did they not mention the game during their last earning call? The call where they delayed all of the Godfather games.

Gah, it's too early. But ya, a lot of info coming out of Leipzig I am told.
I'm not so sure there will be a lot of game announcements. New game medias yes for sure, but I don't see MS announcing new games there.

No idea what kind of announcements there will be, but I've told there will be some major info coming out. Not sure if it's about games, price-point, hardware, etc..

When is it anyways?

That's where MS should announce the pricing/availability of the Xbox 360. So yes, big news :)

Honestly, I haven't really liked a racing game since Super Monaco GP 2 on Genesis, but I keep shelling out money on PGR. Why? It's a good arcade racer. Now if they only included some kind of rival system.

So my answer:

TES IV: Oblivion
PGR3

There is only one "Killer App" for the 360 IMO.

PGR - was already a great game on Xbox and it's sequel underperformed until it hit budget price. It's going to be the best looking game, but with so many other racers, it won't be the killer app.

Ghost Recon - Again it's not in the rarified air of being a killer app. Certainly another great looking game, but will get competition from COD2 on the war front. It's also multiplatform and will be similar to it's PC version.

Elder Scrolls - Looks beautiful and is certainly an ambitious game in terms of scope, but it's not one of the best RPG's out there and certainly doesn't have the pedigree of a killer app. It's also multiplatform and will be similar to it's PC version.

Perfect Dark Zero is the potential killer app. The sequel to GoldenEye & Perfect Dark. The return of Rare, the most ambitious online game (PGR3 comes close w/ Gotham TV), and will get A TON of press. It's been hurt a bit by the lackluster MTV unveiling and WallGuy, but I think it was just shown too early.

The line up is quite good. IMO given the time of the year it's launching and number of units available the 360 does not need a killer app. It'll need a killer app beginning 2006. Can you say Gears of War!

Personnaly I'm looking forward to Oblivion, Frame City Killers and Full Auto.

$300 is relative, to me right now, being unemployed It would take Halo 3 for me to pay launch price for 360..but if i get this job tomorrow then to throw my $300 away all I'd need would be PGR3 and a decent internet connection.

Imo a Killer Ap is two things, Firstly a great game and secondly a PR phenomenon

None of the games MS has coming for November will meet the second criteria.

But I mean thats no giant failure for MS, Xbox was probably the only console to launch with a game that was barely bettered in the whole generation (You could argue Mario 64).

Gears of War could be a killer ap, but i doubt it.

I think we could be waiting for Halo 3 for the first big hit on 360.

whats this elder scrolls thing? Sounds like a fantasy RPG hack'n'slash thing, but I'm curious now lots have mentioned it.

Ridge Racer 6

Oblivion could be up there too. On that note, the E3 trailer for Oblivion was displayed at a rock solid 60 fps. Does anyone know whether or not this is actually the case?

Perfect Dark Zero -- Has a lot of hype surrounding it. I don't know what to expect, but I'm far more interested in PDZ than Call of Duty (has a lot to do with the sci-fi theme vs the WWII theme).

Ridge Racer 6 -- Launch window RR games have always brought the "wow" factor. Also Ridge Racer games are just a lot of fun.

TES IV: Oblivion -- Graphics show a huge leap over Xbox 1's Morrowind. Oblivion should offer deep gameplay and a long quest too. Most consoles go about a year before they get a good RPG, but X360 gets one right off the bat.

It's the sequel to Morrowind, which was a large, open ended, fantasy RPG hack'n'slash thing (in first person).

Ridge Racer 6 and Call of Duty 2 come close but I'm still not quite sold on the x360. I think I'll wait for reviews to come out till I make the final call.

well it was FFXI for me, but I just bought a new computer so.... PGR3? I would probably also get DoA if I end up getting one too.

Depending on it's quality it's Kameo. If it's as good as Rare games were in history, it's a Must-Have to me but nevertheless I'm going to buy my 360 end of next year, even if Kameo is a MH.If Revolution hits Europe in 2006 it may be 2007 but I highly doubt it ;).

Glad you asked.

Hack & slash isn't really a good description -- the game has a great deal of depth. It's a huge open-ended RPG with lots of areas to explore and lots of stuff to do, and an epic storyline that continues the rich history of The Elder Scrolls. Oblivion is the fourth RPG in the series, after Arena (1994), Daggerfall (1996), and Morrowind (2002).

Oblivion get's discounted by me almost immediately because I'll just be buying it on the PC anyway. Call of Duty 2 though...is there a PC SKU for that?
