I like the way that you can stand the Xbox 360 remote, pretty cool. I also was surprised to hear that the Xbox 360 will be able to download and display HD movies through Xbox Live. Jeff Henshaw (14:30) starts talking about how they are planning to offer HD Movies directly for download off of the Xbox Live marketplace. I can't wait until they start doing that, that will be so awesome.

I think I'm going to have to get Media Center software for my computer so I can make use of all the streaming video content in my living room. Windows Vista is going to have Media Center software built-in but I don't think I can wait for Microsoft to ship that OS.

Is it known yet if formats like Xvid can be used on the 360 with media center? If so I might have to go my XPMC.

so streaming should still be viable through wireless as well right?

It should be, but I've set up so many Xbox Media Centres via wireless to tell you right now it's not that great because the bandwidth is just not there. If your wireless is set up so that you can get a good connection at your HT, then go for it. Personally I'm sticking to wired.

No it won't and nor will DivX. Which makes the whole thing virtually worthless.

Basically they say you need 802.11a or a wired connection to stream HD content, but 802.11g should be okay for standard definition content. Wired and 802.11a will result in the least amount of interference.

Not really worthless as you can still stream your MP3s into the games, but I guess you dont need XPMC to do that.

Looks like my OG (modded) XBOX isn't getting replaced anytime soon.

Totally agree! What the hell is the point in only supporting a format (wmv) that is not widely accepted. I reckon they are counting on the fact that most people will not realise that their entire collection of divx/xvid films will simply not be supported.

Another rediculous aspect to this is that wmvhd content can only be streamed and not played back from a dvd source (so in order to playback terminator wmvhd version u will have to stream it over ur network). Simply pacthetic.

To clarify - The 11a over 11g for HD content is only if you personally have interference. 11g will be fine in a stable enviroment with no 2.4ghz microwave/phone issues.

Pacthetic that they don't want to bolster the pirate community? I don't think so...

i've got 802.11a, sweet!!!!

i've been told ffdshow works for xvid/divx, etc for streaming content but I can't absolutely confirm till I test it myself

What are u talking about? Every new dvd player includes support for divx/xvid playback, and i am not talking about a no-brand dvd players, im talking about sony and the like.

Oh and speaking of piracy, its just as easy to get hold of dvd-r images as dvdrips in xvid format. So that argument fails right there on those two points.

I don't get your last point, as that has nothing to do with wmv, but if the first point is true, then that means the 360 doesn't compete as a DVD player.

But wouldn't the wireless adapter for the Xbox360 have to be .11a?

Its b/g/a.

Xbox Live with no strings attached

* Dual band 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wireless A/B/G home network compatible
* Compact, high-performance design
* Powered by Xbox 360 to eliminate adapter clutter
* Streams photos and music from Microsoft Windows XP and recorded TV, movies, and videos from your Microsoft Windows XP Media Center based PC

What I meant was that if they allow you to playback dvds (which can be pirated just as easily as divxs) then why not offer divx/xvid playback support. I really cannot see the logic behind trying to push their own dying format.

....and its not if. Here is a uk sony model that supports divx: http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProd...w_en_GB&pageType=Overview&category=DVD+Player

WMV? Dying format? :lol WMV is the dominant format. What do you think just about every website uses for video streaming? I'll give you a hint it isn't Divx or Real player video.

Divx/Xvid is the dominant format of illegal torrents yes, but there are relatively few professional sites on the internet that make use of Xvid or Divx. WMV is also a superior compression format to Divx. Only video compression that may be better than WMV is H.264.

Why the hell would you want to stream small clips from websites. I am talking about streaming your film collection from your pc. Some people love to have all of their favourite films on their 100gb+ hardrives for easy access. So instead of searching for a specific film on dvd, many compress into divx and create a library of films on their pc.

Btw, one of the best xbox360 websites (video content wise) uses divx for compression. I am ofcourse talking about blim's xboxyde.com

Any what he's saying is that wmv is a better format to do that in than Xvid/Divx because it gets better compression. His post wasn't hard to understand.

Then use WMV to convert your movies instead of Divx.

But if most people already have a massive collection of compressed films, why would they recompress all over again? And there is a reason that the scene use xvid, the reason being is that it is a more efficient format than wmv.

More efficient to D/L from torrents?

They aren't using divx because the piracy scene uses it, in all likelyhood.

They don't want to get harassed by the MPAA, so they're avoiding a major source of it.

And whats with all the piracy remarks? Yes pirates do use xvid to compress their dvd's but the scene release exactly the same amount of dvd-r's as they do xvids/divxs. So should they not let u playback dvds then?

No they should allow DVDs, but not divx.

But as I stated earlier, most recent dvd players come with support for these formats, including big brand players like sony. Obviously they dont see anything wrong with that.

Oh, and what about mp3's then. They are the biggest threat to the music industry, yet microsoft chose to support that format as well as their own wma.

I think its hipocrytical....

Why allow one and not the other if both contribute to piracy. You make no sense!
I just crushed your piracy argument.

vas, shut the fuck up.

I'm not happy they aren't using Divx/Xvid. I'm really not fucking happy they aren't allowing it on non-media center PCs.

You're not gonig to win the argument, so just stop.

I havent been rude to u. So shut the hell up urself, u fucking wanker!!!

Who is going to allow HD movies to be downloaded to Xbox 360? Basically all content providers demand piracy protection, and the system does not support it (no HDMI).

Good point.

Heh.

Think of it this way. I've helped many people convert their VHS tapes to DVDs, with the use of video editing software. Many of the software that we offered at Best Buy were able to convert to WMV format...but I didn't see one that would convert to divx.

Personally I dload divx formats of TV shows I've missed, usually Smallville or Arrested Development. So I watch them on my modded Xbox and it's great. I hope for a day when WB/FOX allows people to watch the last week's episode online (hey, I wouldn't mind watching the ads too if it were to pay for the service leaving it free for us), but until then I'll go this route. So while I do miss divx personally, I think it hasn't reached the popularity of the mp3 format just yet, and thus it's a good time to steer clear from that format which is almost exclusively used for piracy (and perhaps a HANDFUL of websites for legit content).

With WMV they are able to distribute legitimate content and start a new wave of legitimate digital entertainment. If there existed something akin to iTunes but for movies...that'd be great.

Fair play. Although you have to rememer that the only reason that mp3 is so widely accepted nowdays is that it started a digital revolution in music piracy.

And just about bought the music industry to its knees.

I thought the movies get downloaded to the media center pc and is played from your extender.
