Xbox 360 NBA 2K6 preview

Speaking of Top Spin and Visual Concepts, I had to go and dig this OS interview with Greg Thomas, head of VC:

"Operation Sports: 2K Games recently acquired the development firm Indie Built, as well as a solid lineup of sports games formerly published under the Microsoft Game Studios banner, namely Top Spin™ and Amped®. What can we expect of these games under 2K Games' stewardship?

Thomas: We work really closely with the crew at Indie Built, and they're fantastic. They do Top Spin and Amped for us, and both those games are looking fantastic. Top Spin is a gorgeous game and it plays so well, and we think that Amped is going to be a really big eye-opener for gamers when it's released. The Indie Built guys are real, professional developers, just as Visual Concepts is, just as Kush Games is—and putting all of us together (under the 2K Sports brand) has created great synchronicity all the way through.

We wouldn't have taken these additional titles on if we didn't think they were fantastic. We felt that they would increase the value of 2K Sports and give us even more quality titles moving forward."

have you taken art direction into consideration when thinking of games like ridge racer, kameo, perfect dark zero, and dead or alive 4?

and top spin 2, ghost recon: advanced warfighter, and elder scrolls: oblivion deserve to be at the top of that list.

the games that aren't getting mentioned are the games that need to step it up.
if you watch that Kameo developer video where he's demonstrating all the new characters... you can see it also deserves to be on the top list. i mean, those graphics are insane.

I think people are taking what I said the wrong way. I meant that only those few at the top were really "WOW, that's the first time I've seen that in an actual game!" type of games. Those other games are very very close to that wow factor and I think as we get closer to seeing final builds, more and more people will get on the bandwagon because they'll have good reason to :)

Games looking this real is whats going to light Xbox360 on fire with mainstream gamers. Holy shit, when they see this they will be blown away. And their expectations are nowhere near as high as ours.

Snoopers who was there for Xboxyde was said that what we saw at E3 was nothing like what the final game would look like.

HOLY SHIT!

Just thought about PRO EVO SOCCER 360!

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!

If they get anywhere near to these models then :O

The art direction more than anything is what makes this game look so good. If the gameplay is as smooth and fluid as it is crisp and beautiful then this will be a killar app all the way. They only complaint I can give are of the audience models which look only slightly better than the Fight Night Round 2 models except they animate better. I guess its just not realistic to make convincing looking stadium crowds yet. I want to see what VC can do on the PS3.

Good call man... but of course, you're a dev (and mod) and obviously knows stuff that us regulars crackers don't. I can't imagine now what the next-gen NHL 2k game will look like now, but I can't wait to see it! These graphics on my HDTV, the sublime NHL 2k gameplay, Xbox Live, my surround sound, my comfy ass recliner... oh, it's fuckin ON! :D

Heh, the "well you're a dev so you knew stuff we didn't" shit doesn't fly with me. Anyone with a clue knew that the final kits would show the real juice for this machine. Dreamcast and XBox development went through the same evolution...weaker kits and PC's used initially, until the final kits were able to be manufactured and distributed. Yet for some reason 90% of the board either forgot all about that like complete idiots. You can't squeeze blood out of a stone, which is all the beta 360 kits basically were.

This time around I didn't waste my precious time and energy correcting the misinformation...the images and footage speak for themselves. Though MS has still made some major league fuck ups in terms of PR and general perception. For their sake I hope they fixed the rudder on their vessel.

The animation still needs some work though. I don't think it looks nearly as smooth as the Lebron E3 demo. If they can get it to that level, that'll just be ridiculous. As it currently stands I'd take anything between that and what they currently have.

Heh yeah, that's the game I want...especially with that 360 controller.

And BTW, can I assume the "graphics aren't important" talk from six months ago has gone into extended hibernation for the next couple years? :lol

Those are honestly stunning.......words fail me. Between this, PGR3 and NBA2k I think we can put the power of the 360 totally up to the devs. Every bit of the xbox 1.5 crap has been deserved UNTIL NOW.

I have always said that every game next gen is going to knock our pants off, now it's going to be gameplay and new compelling ways to play our games. It's going to be about an experience rather than playing. With visuals and no doubt audio coming from 2K6, i want to be able to have total control over what happens on the court and the ability to create situations on the fly. If Shaq has 5 fouls with less than 2 minutes to go in the game i'm up 1 with the ball, i would want to get him posted up for either an easy basket or try to draw a foul by creating contact. I would like to have the ability to create baskets based on contact on drives, i would like to be able to crossover opponents based on their and mine momentum...this is what i expect from the next gen...not just a shinny cover.

I was simply wow'd by the quality of both the video and screens. At first I couldnt figure out why it looked so life-like. Was it the sweat or the cloth physics? Then I realised that as good as those two features are that was not it. It is the SHADING of SKIN!!! I really believe that 2k have solved the puzzle of creating realistic shading of human skin.

Have a look at players skin shading in live compared to 2k6

I'm convinced that the player models are created naked and socks, sneakers, jerseys, shorts, head bands everything is modeled on top of and independently from the player himself. Impressive.

awesome. can't wait to play naked mode.

some of the likenesses are a quite a bit off. They nailed Shaq and Lebron (though Lebron looks strangely thin), and VC for the most part, but Paul Pierce and Wade look nothing like their real selves. I guess Pierce isn't a big enough star anymore :p and maybe they don't want to give EA's coverboy any extra pub by making Wade look picture perfect. Kobe better damn well be photorealistic though. I warning VC right now!

Im as awed by this as anyone but no. Something this good looking in real time doesnt need hyperbole to get that fact across.

It's not hyperbole, it's fact. Heck, this game looks more realistic that FF:TSW. I'm sure the fact that the 360 pumping out these kinds of visuals is hurting your pride, but don't let it blind you from reality.

At first glance they might look more realistic, but geometry wise they are obviously a lot simpier. Still awesome though, they nailed those skin shaders perfectly.

One can only imagine what a beat em up concentrating all those polys on 2 characters and using those shaders and that cloth simulation would look like.
That's what my next gen dreams are made of ! Not that i care that much about beat em ups anymore, i'm just a huge graphic whore i guess.

Crazy. I can't even imagine what Ubi Soft will do in Splinter Cell 4 or Bungie in Halo 3.. Damn, I wish I was actually interested in basketball games, then I would go absolutely mad about this.

The only thing hurting after reading your shrill nonsensical posts is my head.

The light bouncing off the floorboards onto the players looks amazing. Almost gives a faux sub-surface look to their skin texture.

Have you guys seen the NBA Live 06 commercial? It looks like they show next gen footage at the end of it. The game looks OK, but it really does look bad compared to NBA2K6 in motion.
