When I first got my 360 a few weeks ago, I found that I was unable to get online; kept getting DNS errors, which I finally was able to get around by disabling my firewall settings, connecting, and reapplying the firewall again, and everything was fine.

But then I went on vacation for a week, and now I find that I am unable to connect once again. Same thing as before, but now the firewall method isn't working for me. I am using a wired set up with a router, and keep getting DNS errors. Tried unplugging the modem, router, XBox ethernet cables, etc., but nothing is working. Any suggestions?

Do you have your X360 auto-detect network settings, or did you configure them yourself?

What router do you have? Have you tried connecting modem directly to 360? If it works, there's something wrong with your router. If not, it's something with modem / ISP. For me, I just had to plugged (wired) and play with my Netgear WGT624. Didn't need to change anything.

I'll have to check the router brand when I get home, but I think it's from Buffalo (do they make stuff outside Japan?). Like I said earlier, I was able to get online before, also hooked up a PS2 to the router and no had problem getting online with that, either.

If I hook the 360 directly into the modem, do I need to have manual ISP settings, or is auto-detect still okay?

Do you have Cable or DSL? With, Cable use auto detect. Just reset modem before connecting 360. If DSL, does it us PPPoE protocol? If yes, you will have to enter it in manually.

It's DSL; Don't believe it uses PPPoE. I've always been able to get online with anything by just plugging in a connection and using auto-detect.

This may sound shitty, but call MS. Maybe they can help you.

Just manually assign it a DNS and IP. Log into your router and put the IP address you assigned to your 360 in the DHCP exclusion list. Also, you can put the IP address you assigned to the 360 in the DMZ. That will put it ahead of any firewalls.

Get good router. They are like $50. I have had no problems with Netgear WGT624(currently using) or DLink DI-624 (Live certified).

I just ran across this as well. Instead of putting the console in the DMZ, open the following ports. Putting the 360 in the DMZ essentially does the same thing, but also opens up all of the other ports as well.

UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074.

In most cases you won't need to change anything. In the event you need to forward a port used by Xbox Live, you generally need to enter the following data for each port opened:

Application or Description field: Xbox Live
Port Range Start: 88 (or 3074)
Port Range End: 88 (or 3074)
Protocol Type: UDP or TCP
IP Address of your Xbox 360: from Network Settingss
Enable: check a box to enable the port forward

Okay, still no luck. I also just tried out my PS2 to see if it would connect, and no dice. The DNS error it gave me was "-612 NET_DNS_TRY_AGAIN
The DNS resolver cannot be found. "DNAS Error (-612) A network error has occurred." Please double-check your network connection and/or network configuration."

When I went on vacation two weeks ago, I brought my laptop to the hotel, and had to change some network settings to get online from there; I am certain this has something to do with it, but I can't remember what I changed. :/ Yet getting online with my PC has been no problem.


EDIT: Do I need automatic or manual IP settings for a direct connection? Can't get online that way, either.

So now I seem to be able to connect once again, but I can't log into my gamer tag because the credit card it's using is expired. Is there no way to do this online? I don't want to have to call long distance to the U.S. just to renew it. :/

That's odd, I can directly connect to my cable modem just fine. (360 and PS2)

Try calling your ISP.

Never mind; it's all good and I am back online with both systems. I still have no idea why I was unable to connect until now.
