A German website has uncovered what could quite possibly be the reason for the Xbox 360 overheating issues so many owners have come across since release.
According to Gamestore24, who took apart two seperate Xbox 360 consoles for this experiment, a layer of protective film had been left on top of the thermal compound that should be found on the ATI GPU heatsink.
For anyone who builds PC's for themselves, you will understand the issues this could cause. Ideally the chip should have direct contact with the heat transfer pad (which lies beneath the protective wrap and thermal compound), otherwise the distribution of heat is severly affected and can cause cooling and performance issues.
Why the protective film has been left on is a mystery to us, but the possibility of it protecting the chipset from dust prior to installation seems on the money. This should have been removed however, and is a major problem for Microsoft. There is no way of telling if your Xbox 360 has the same issue unless you crack open the case and have a peek but we don't recommend you do this.
Strange!!
