XBox 360 Points

I was browsing through the 360 Dashboard and I noticed that some of my games show what look to be Microsoft Points next to them. Am I right? Can these be redeemend?

Gamer Score != Microsoft Points

Microsoft Points - monetary unit to buy things at the marketplace

Gamer Score - bragging rights, each game has achievements you can do for points which I find very addicitve.

You might be getting confused.

If it says Gamerscore* then no you can't redeem those points.
If it says Microsoft Points or has some little pac-man symbol. Then you can use that to purchase things at the marketplace.

Gamerscore - Points you get after accomplishing an achievement in any game.
Microsoft points - Purchased online via credit card or redeem a pre-paid card (purchased at any game store) to buy games and stuff at the marketplace.

Those aren't Microsoft points that you can use to buy stuff. Those are achievement points that add up to your total gamer score.

MS has a cool idea with with this. you're not only playing for the sake of playing or beating a game... you can get rewards for your achievements :)

Yep. Gamers are maybe forgetting why they play games or how to feel compelled playing them if they are starting to need rewards like those achievement points. To me it's very ironic because we'll start playing for points again like in the 8 bit era???

That's what makes Burnout Revenge so fun imo... high scores are not, by any means, dead.

Well not rewards, just bragging rights. You can't really DO anything with the score other than show it off. That being said, the achievement idea is really great, it's really driving me to play certain games more. I know which ones I just won't be able to do (beat Smash TV on one credit, are you MAD?) and don't try for those.

My only problem is one of the achievements I need to get in Geometry Wars is "store up 9 bombs", but there lies the problem. To get 9 bombs, you need to not use them. But to get 9 bombs you have to get a score of 600000 if you don't use any... but if you don't use them, you end up dying. You die, you lose your multiplier. You lose your multiplier, you don't get 600000. Damn vicious cycle. But once I get that achievement my game will get better, I know it.

The one thing I don't like is that console games get 1000 points while Arcade games get 200 points. So beating Smash TV gets you 5 points, while completing training mode of CoD2 gets you 50. Its kinda unbalanced. Otherwise they're awesome.

I also like being able to see my friends achievements in games. I heard Elder scrolls 4 will show if a person have found certain items like swords and stuff.. hidden treasures..

this is just too cool. :)

I'm surprised at the speed that Live is able to update these stats ASAP. Fast as hell.
None of that EA shit where they take 12-24 hours to update a single game. (Battlefield 2 -_- )

HA! I get 100 points for getting 4 sacks in 1 game in madden, Winning superbowl in franchise, Passing over 350 yards, rushing over 150 yards and winning 1 game. :D

Next one I'm attempting. 30 years of franchise. Worth 400.

I really like the idea of Achievements. They're like the stuff you'd do in other games, except instead of unlocking Big Head Mode, you get something that stays with your Live Account.

Although, some of the achievements are not only crazy hard (Smash TV on one credit, what seriously), but some are just impossible. One of Quake 4's Achievements is rank no.1 on all gametypes on Live? Uh... unless you were playing a bunch on day 1, there's only a handful of people that can ever get that one. Let alone win a ranked multiplayer match with just the blaster, c'mon guys. At least give some people a chance.

The cool thing about the points is it spurs competition. A friend of mine was playing Need For Speed a bunch... until he noticed I far surpassed him in Kameo. Realizing I had beaten the game, it forced him to beat Kameo ASAP so he wouldn't let me pass him. Now, I'm working on catching up in NFS, because he has a sizeable lead. If you're competitive with your friends and like to talk trash, these points keep things interesting. The reason I beat Kameo is because I noticed my friend was almost at the same point as me, so it pushed me to go further.

It also encourages you to do modes in games you wouldn't have done before. I just did Survival mode in Hexic. Did I enjoy doing it? Yes. Would I have done 50 levels of it if there weren't achievement points to earn from it? Hell no. And that's the beauty of it.

But yeah, developers have to think before they make achievements. Get creative. Achievements that make you do something fun but wouldn't have done without the achievement (Joust has a survive Wave 1 of Joust for 2 minutes without getting killed OR killing any of the enemies. Fun, but would you have tried it? That's the kind of achievements I like.
