Because of what MS brings to the table - cash, stability and the ability to illustrate to third parties that they can make mony on their platform, as with the XBox. After the Sega-CD, 32x and Saturn, Sega had a hell of a time getting that kind of support.

Anyway, I don't think Xbox 360 is that bad of a name for the new system. It's certainly not the worst name for a video game system. That honor belongs to the Dreamcast, whose name still sounds so very queer after all these years.

I don't get the Dreamcast name hate, it's one of the best console names, Genesis easily being the best console name ever. Xbox 360 is just fucking stupid. Although I have to say I'm a hater of that X-TREME sub-culture bullshit that MTV fosters.

xbox 360 is stupid, but only marginally more stupid then xbox, which most people have grown used to. thats the thing, a lot fo these system names sound flat out terrible when you first hear them, i'd argue that "playstation" is the worst of all... yet its done fine.

I thought Playstation was pretty clever, actually. A workstation is a computer meant for serious work, and a Playstation is a computer (entertainment system) meant for play. I can see where people get the Playskool association from, though. :lol The Dreamcast name isn't bad, but it always struck me as a little... strange. To me, it sounds like some New-Age gadget designed to broadcast people's dreams to one another or something.
